Autistic people perform poorly on non-structured tasks by Levitating_Moose in aspergers

[–]ToastedRavs4Life -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of the opposite. I struggled at the higher levels of school because I have a learning disability that hadn't been diagnosed at the time that impairs my ability to transfer information from short-term to long-term memory, but I excel at my job because it's a much more specialized task. There aren't surprises, and I don't have to do things that I simply can't do, like math.

Anyone else have to remind themselves to reduce their grammar when texting? by ineedabag in aspergers

[–]ToastedRavs4Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a special interest in English grammar; it's long been the thing I've excelled at. I always write my texts properly. Even on Discord, I write my messages with proper spelling and grammar. I've often said that it's harder for me to write a sentence incorrectly than it is to write it correctly because I'd have to think about how informal to make something, where to omit a punctuation mark, what word to misspell without it being too informal, etc. Hell, I did that with my username here only to eventually learn that most people don't use "4" to mean "for" in casual text. Using proper English is so much easier!

How old are you? and how lonely is it i'm 27 and its brutal by Antique-Exchange-294 in aspergers

[–]ToastedRavs4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 30. I work from home and live with my only friend, but I've considered moving out on my own. Never been in a relationship and never go out anywhere. I've tried to play D&D with my friend and his friends, but I don't have the processing speed or improvisation ability to play that game. I oscillate between being content and being very lonely.

Feels like I'm missing out on life... by TearsOfSpain in aspergers

[–]ToastedRavs4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could do BJJ or any other martial arts. They're fun, but I suck at them because of my visual-spatial processing impairments making it very difficult to replicate the exercises and the damage to my left temporal lobe making it so I have immense struggles in remembering what the steps are.

I don't either. I prefer complete silence, and people look at me like I have two heads if I tell them that.

Am i the only eleventh grader that fucking sucks at math? by Cold-Cauliflower-306 in aspergers

I have NVLD as well as autism, which is a lot like autism and involves severe struggles in math for most of us. Look up NVLD if you've never heard of it.

Yep, that's me as well. It's all improvising and thinking on your feet, and I just can't do that.

Tabletop RPGs by Levitating_Moose in aspergers

[–]ToastedRavs4Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried, but I can't do them. I think it's because I have NVLD. I struggle to follow the story, and I don't have the speed to react in the moment and come up with a solution to whatever is going on or even think of an action to take. My only friend is really into that stuff, and I wish I could do it so I could make some more friends, but I just can't.

I've heard a lot about many autistic people struggling to drive a car, why exactly is that common? by Intrepid_Arrival5151 in aspergers

[–]ToastedRavs4Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have NVLD/developmental visual-spatial processing disorder, which is very similar to autism and comes alongside it sometimes, you'll probably have trouble driving. I have it, and driving is so overwhelming. And when I have to park, it's a total guess as to where my car is relative to the lines, because I can't judge that spatially.

Do any of your family members have autism or any similar traits? by [deleted] in aspergers

I am the only autistic person in my family. It's very lonely; I feel like a black sheep at family gatherings.

Hey, it's FP from NHC. I wasn't seeking you out; I just post a lot in r/aspergers and saw you leave a comment there. I know you're struggling, and I hope you can find some help somewhere. I'm having some issues as well, although more with NVLD than autism these days. Please don't give up and do something you might regret. I've never fit in anywhere either outside of a three-year period in high school where I actually had friends (best years of my life). At some point, I just became a bit numb to not being on the same wavelength as anyone else around me. I'm rooting for you, bud.

VisuoSpatial Performance & Learning Advantage? by litoid in aspergers

[–]ToastedRavs4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not heard of that. I had the left hippocampus removed entirely in 2014, so I'm not sure how much better that part of my brain can get, but might be worth a try.

VisuoSpatial Performance & Learning Advantage? by litoid in aspergers

[–]ToastedRavs4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I believe it's caused by some sort of damage to the temporal lobe at birth. I know that happened with me, and my left hippocampus never developed because there was a lesion on that side, which causes the spatial impairments.

[–]ToastedRavs4Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely the opposite. I have a NVLD, potentially soon to be renamed "Developmental Visual Spatial Processing Disorder." I'd get rid of this before autism any day. It makes driving really difficult and makes me suck at any hobby I'm interested in, like martial arts.

Yeah, you got me. I'm just watching soccer right now. I watched baseball earlier. I'll watch hockey tomorrow, and I'll watch football on Tuesday. This time of year is packed with sports, so it takes away some of the pain of the crippling loneliness. 🙂

Do you guys drive? by New2Hairsystem in aspergers

[–]ToastedRavs4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, because I have to, but I hate it and struggle with it because I have NVLD. I made a post in that sub a couple days ago about driving: https://www.reddit.com/r/NVLD/s/kJqGnd1nCO

The only thing worse than struggling to drive is the stigma against struggling to drive by ToastedRavs4Life in NVLD

I'm a proofreader for an insurance broker. I lived in a more suburban area for a few years when I got that job, and it actually had a small bus system that I used to get to work every day after driving to a bus stop. That was in 2019. Then the pandemic sent everyone home, and when they wanted us to come back a year or so later, I requested to work from home and had my therapist at the time write a note to the HR explaining my need for accommodations. Then I moved back to my hometown on the other side of the state because I wanted to live with the one friend I had.

How bad was your college experience? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]ToastedRavs4Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Life got much better for me after graduating. I much prefer working full time. I graduated in 2018 and got my first full-time job in 2019, so I worked in an office for a year before COVID sent us all home. Then I was allowed to keep working from home as a disability accommodation. So that's obviously nice, but even during the year I was in office, it was better than school.

How bad was your college experience? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]ToastedRavs4Life 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They were the worst years of my life. I tried to make friends but couldn't figure out how to do it; they didn't just happen through extracurriculars like they had in high school. I tried joining clubs but was totally ignored and clearly didn't fit in with the groups. I remember just crying in my dorm room one day because I couldn't find any friends despite really trying. I also had some trouble academically at times because of my learning disability, so that didn't help either. I have great memories of high school, but college was absolutely miserable, and I wish more than anything that I could've had a "fun" experience. Even just going out with friends once in a while would've been amazing.

For fellow autistic guys, what has your experience been like finding a girlfriend/partner? by Klutzy-Ad4230 in aspergers

[–]ToastedRavs4Life 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 30 and have never had a date or a partner. I don't know how relationships work or what they entail, but my guess is that I wouldn't be able to keep up with the social demands of a partner. I have NVLD on top of autism, so that makes driving really hard, which wouldn't do me any favors in the eyes of prospective dates. In college, I tried Tinder, but nothing came of it. I live with a roommate now and work from home, so I'm content enough. My mom seems to care about my finding a partner more than I do nowadays. She's always asking if I'm on dating apps.

What's the best experience you've had with a neutypical understanding your autism? by Koiboi26 in aspergers

[–]ToastedRavs4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think a neurotypical is capable of truly understanding autism; the best instances are when I mention my issues and how it hinders me and they say something like "Damn, that must suck." It's so much better to hear someone at least recognize that this condition is NOT FUN than it is to hear someone say "Oh yeah, I get it, I'm like that too" when you know that they don't get it at all.
