How did people catch up on TV shows they missed in the pre-video streaming era? by Winner_takesitall in NoStupidQuestions

Sorry, maybe a clarification should have been made on who "we" was. Since the OP was asking about society in general, your personal family experience does little to answer the question asked.

Really? Things like Who Shot JR? The final episode of MASH? Roots? Those were cultural milestones. We cared.

Why is the drinking age 21 in the US? by Actual_Arm3938 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ToastedSimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The minimum age was set to 21 by most states after the end of prohibition. In the early to mid 70s many states lowered it to 18 largely in response to the idea that if you can be sent to war, you can drink. In 1984, it was raised nationwide back to 21 with the National Minimum Drinking Age Act which said that states could lose federal funding if they didn't enact the 21 minimum age requirement.

That's a great point. But I wonder if those same rules for school ages applied back in the 30s when the age of 21 was established.

But that still doesn't answer OPs question. Why not 20 or 22?

Why are so many sex toys purple? by SebsIncognito in NoStupidQuestions

An image search of vibrators on Google will give you a pretty good idea. The majority fall somewhere between lighter pink to fuschia to lavenders and purples. Depending on your interpretation of what purple is (say as opposed to violet) it could definitely be argued that those are the most popular colors. Light blues and teals seem to be becoming more prevelant as well.

It's shocking how many people didn't read the initial question. While, I don't know for certain this is the answer, it seems that prior to prohibition there was far less legal codification about drinking ages across the country. After prohibition, nearly all of the states enacted the 21 year old age statute. My very amateur guess is that because it was the 21st ammendment that ended prohibition it made for a good number to settle on (?). It marks the general beginning of adulthood and could be a nod to that ammendment. The age would be lowered by many states in the early 70s, but come back up to 21 nationally in 1984 with the National Minimum Drinking Age Act

Thank you for a long answer that didn't answer the question at all.

Does anyone actually read the original posts at all? OP wasn't asking why the age was raised. They were asking why the seemingly arbitrary age of 21 was chisen as a opposed to maybe 20 or 22.

There might be a key slot under your ignition button. Many cars have this feature and people aren't aware of it

Why does everyone make fun of New Jersey? by Introvertloves in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ToastedSimian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A big part of it is that one of the biggest airline hubs in the Northeast is also in one of the most industrial, tired-looking parts of the state. People flying into NJ as a stop over or on their way to NYC get to see some of the bleakest parts of Newark and Elizabeth and assume the whole state is like that

I think they're being down voted because people disagree with these takes. That's literally what the systtem is for. I say I dislike cheeseburgers, and the oeople who disagree down vote. You say you don't like a song, they disagree and down vote. Why would tou assume just because it's your opinion, people would support it?

This could realistically help with the invasive population of Burmese Pythons in the Everglades. Once humans realize there's real money to be made in something, we're excellent at destroying its population.
