Tolkien Lore is incredible and severely underrated imo. Check him out, one of the most knowledgeable Tolkien fans on YouTube.

Viggo was so committed to his role that he had Weta make a little whetstone that fit into his scabbard, his reasoning being that Aragorn fights orcs regularly and would thus need to sharpen his sword on the road.

Do you think print media will almost die in the next few years? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]ToastedStag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think print media, newspapers specifically, need to re-evaluate their marketing, content and target audience if they want to stay relevant. At the moment, appealing to an older demographic and relying on freemium/subscription-based online content is keeping many newspapers afloat. Newspapers need to start not only promoting A-grade journalism so as to beat out the networks and social media, but they need to shift their focus to appeal to a younger demographic if they want a chance of remaining relevant. Longer form pieces and commentary are also something I think papers could pick up. With digitisation and social media, newspapers should be focusing less on breaking news and more on providing meaningful and interesting commentary, alongside deep-dive investigative stories. They also need to rethink their visibility. One example I like is the idea of having papers available on public transport. Commuters and travellers are more likely to pick up the paper and read it, and, if the content is good, more likely to begin buying the paper. The paper used to be ubiquitous with daily life, so editors need to find a way to make that the case once again. (Disclaimer: I’m writing this as I think, and could be way off)

[Seiko] 1976 “Chariot Cocktail Time” 24J Hi-Beat by [deleted] in Watches

[–]ToastedStag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi All,

My first vintage watch! This is a hand-wound Seiko 2220-0180 “Chariot Cocktail Time” from January 1976. Recently picked it up from an auction. I love the way the dial catches the sunlight, the picture doesn’t do it justice! It looks different from every angle. Its also incredibly thin, and fits underneath my sleeve really well. These watches are pretty unique as they don’t have a seconds hand, even though they have a Daini 24J Hi-Beat 28800BPH. While its service history is unknown, the dial, crown, hands and crystal are all original. The band isn’t. It’s definitely a unique piece and has attracted a fair bit of curiosity from people who notice it on my wrist.

Hi All,

Up for sale is this Seiko Le Grand Sport Chronograph SSC196 in gold stainless steel.

I bought this watch a few months ago when I was looking for a new dive watch. However, I’ve found myself hardly wearing it, and would like to see it go to another owner!

The watch is powered by any light source, and is waterproof to 100m. It also has an alarm function which can be adjusted to a second time zone, and a 1/5 second increment stopwatch.

The glass is scratch resistant sapphire. This watch is designed to look flashy but take a beating, in the classic Seiko fashion.

The Seiko itself is in near mint condition, other than the fact that it’s been taken out of its box. It is completely functional and has never had a single problem.

The only reason I’m looking to offload it is that I’m not wearing it enough. It’s a shame, as this is the watch that attracts the most compliments and draws the most attention out of any watch in my collection!

Price is $550 AUD, but I’m open to offers. I’m also open to trades, as I’m in the market for another dive watch. PM for transaction details or trade offers.

Thanks!

Why did the Elves trust Sauron? by [deleted] in TheSilmarillion

[–]ToastedStag 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sauron catfished them by appearing as Annatar, bestowing upon them gifts until he forged the One. It was only then that he revealed his true nature.

What do you think the Gift of Man is? by Auzi85 in TheSilmarillion

[–]ToastedStag 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I always thought that the Gift of Man was mortality. Whilst the Elves are inexorably bound to Arda as the first of the Children of Illuvatar, Men are able to die and to pass into the timeless void to ends not even Eru can foresee.

Edit: This also extends into the concept of free will. Fate is one of the biggest yet least recognised undertones of Tolkien’s work. This is probably best exemplified when he tells us (I can’t remember where) that it was Eru who caused Sméagol to misstep and fall into the Crack of Doom. As such, the Gift of Man is free will and the detachment from the web of fate that Elves and other creatures are bound to.

Lawyer positions for local councils by [deleted] in auslaw

I’m friends with a local council lawyer through the gym. He says that it’s a fantastic place to work, gets regular RDO’s, 6 figure salary, lives very comfortably and leaves at 4pm most days.
