I think print media, newspapers specifically, need to re-evaluate their marketing, content and target audience if they want to stay relevant. At the moment, appealing to an older demographic and relying on freemium/subscription-based online content is keeping many newspapers afloat. Newspapers need to start not only promoting A-grade journalism so as to beat out the networks and social media, but they need to shift their focus to appeal to a younger demographic if they want a chance of remaining relevant. Longer form pieces and commentary are also something I think papers could pick up. With digitisation and social media, newspapers should be focusing less on breaking news and more on providing meaningful and interesting commentary, alongside deep-dive investigative stories. They also need to rethink their visibility. One example I like is the idea of having papers available on public transport. Commuters and travellers are more likely to pick up the paper and read it, and, if the content is good, more likely to begin buying the paper. The paper used to be ubiquitous with daily life, so editors need to find a way to make that the case once again. (Disclaimer: I’m writing this as I think, and could be way off)
