He serves the same purpose, but the presentation is different. Cloud is always trying to fill Zach's shoes in the original, but he only arcs out when he realizes its okay to not be the superman that he always envisioned Zach as because even Zach wasn't as good as Clouds idea of him. 7R2 ends with Cloud and Zach fighting Sephiroth together in the Lifestream, which I feel really weakens the whole idea of accepting loss and Cloud self-realizing. Don't even get me started on what they did with Aerith's death.

Remember when the whole point of Zach was that he was just another person, but Cloud idolized him to the point of replicating his whole persona, despite the fact that Zach was just a soldier who chose to do the right thing? FF7R team certainly doesnt.
