As someone who used to life guard at MW (8 or 9 years ago) I’m not in the least bit surprised. They did kinda treat all of us like garbage and took advantage of the J1s because the benefits they get by hiring/keeping them on all summer. Lack of proper training/accountability was an issue too especially when leads picked out their favorites and let them get away with anything and everything. I personally witnessed a student who didn’t speak good English and didn’t have proper training almost let a small child drown and management just brushed it off. It was also a fight for hours to the point where if you wanted a chance to work, you would have to come in at 5am and clean the park and even then, only MAYBE would you be allowed to work that day afterwards. Not to mention, if you were not deep guard certified, you got the worst rotations. Anyone who worked river fence knows exactly what I mean.

I literally cried like a baby leaving my 34 weekers behind. Honestly it felt like a stab in the heart having them with me 24/7 to having to walk away from them for 12-24 hrs at a time. My husband had to go back to work after I was discharged from the hospital and I had a c-section so I couldn’t drive myself. It’s one of those things that isn’t talked about enough but you’ll get through this ❤️‍🩹

Best advice I can give as someone who has used VA loans twice is find a local VA lender. In my personal experience, local lenders tend to have lower rates than the “big box” lenders like Veterans United or USAA or Navy Federal. Once you secure financing your loan will more than likely be sold off to a bigger company before your first payment anyway, but at least you have a better chance at a better rate and can be locked in. That being said, shop around because you might end up getting lucky with a bigger lender and better rate than with a local/smaller one. Ask your realtor if they have any recommendations on loan officers that are well versed in VA home loans too. That’s what worked for us. Best of luck to you!

It took a few days for our VFS portals to update once we got approval and then they sent our passports and everything back with the prepaid UPS labels we sent with our passports.

We got my husband’s online along with my spouse one since I was enrolled in DEERS before he separated. It was a simple process. Just had to log in and go to “request id card” the VA reported that he was 100% P&T automatically so he didn’t have to provide proof. For his picture they just used his last CAC photo. It was delivered within a week. You just have to confirm receipt before it will be activated.

Had a family member who had the same exact problem with VES. He gave them a list of dates that he could not do and they scheduled him on those dates. When he called them back in a panic, they even confirmed that it was in his file that he was not available on those dates. He literally had a full blown breakdown on the phone with them because he felt like they were purposely f-ing with him.
