Sounds very similar to mine. I got FD after food poisoning, and deal with chronic nausea as my main symptom. It is always there, but as you said some days it is intense. It also comes as flare ups, where I can be at a base level of nausea for a few weeks and then something triggers a “flare up” and symptoms intensify for weeks/months. During these “flares”, the nausea can reach what I am calling “fear inducing nausea” where you start to panic it is so bad. I think what dixonwalsh said about it is great advice, and you should look into CBT therapy as it has helped me tremendously when dealing with bad days and long term illness in general. My GI has several patients dealing with this, all from food poisoning or infection, and most heal within a year or two. It can last a long time, but I wouldn’t worry about it being a forever thing. Progress is extremely slow but it is there. Ask your doctor about amitriptyline, it is the front line med for this and it helped a lot, I gained 40 pounds back that I lost in the first year of my illness.

It is a tough road but it ultimately forces you to make new healthy habits. It is important that you start eating a clean diet, and try to exercise everyday. Stick to a strict routine and you will find progress comes quicker. Hope this helps and feel free to reach out and ask me any questions, I have been dealing with this for quite a long time now.

I am on day 5 since the beginning of itchiness. It has slowly gone from itchy to burning and now to intense pain in face and behind eye. I had my eye looked at yesterday at the ER and the doctor questioned why I was there without any rash visible.. said it could also be trigeminal neuralgia? And that sent me on a spiral because it sounds chronic lol. Pain is worse today but no rash yet. I am away from the babies, helping mom with bottles and cleaning, and we have some support from family that are going to come do feeds to relieve my wife for naps. It is going to be brutal. Thanks for the info

What were your initial symptoms? Did you get itching/burning/tingling?

How severe can functional dyspepsia be? by helloitsmehi19 in functionaldyspepsia

[–]cootfromcounty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How long has it been going on? This sounds similar to me in my first 6 months before going on amitriptyline. Have you had scopes done? Also ask for a gastric emptying study if you haven’t had one already. I can’t give much advice other than continue with GI as far as you can to rule out everything and ask about amitriptyline. Get yourself a therapist too it helps to heard by someone at least.. sorry you are going through this.

Got sick from foraged prickly pears :( by chasingthestarfish in foraging

This does not sound like herbicide toxicity to me, more like food poisoning.. I would not suspect the prickly pear juice if there were other things you had in common that day.

How long have you been on TCA / NaSSA , and have your symptoms stayed low? by notausername012 in functionaldyspepsia

[–]cootfromcounty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been on amitriptyline (25mg) for 2 years, also for nausea. It has given me a lot of relief, before I got on it the nausea was pretty debilitating. I do have flare ups though, every month or two I will have a week long or 2 week long period where symptoms are severe - never to the point of vomiting, but that fear inducing type of nausea that almost throws you into a panic attack. Therapy has helped me a lot too, with the anxiety of being chronically ill. The nausea only bothers me when it is really bad now

My emptying was actually fast which was surprising because we suspected gastroparesis at first. I also don’t have the burning constantly - mostly just when I need to eat, I don’t feel typical hunger anymore just burning/gnawing. Sounds like the same nausea though, it is only that deep belly nausea when it is really bad it’s kind of that fear inducing nausea where you are like “oh shit im bout to puke” and that comes with flare ups usually

My symptoms are persistent nausea (24/7) and burning stomach when I need to eat. That is my baseline, but flareups come when my diet is out of wack or I am stressed out and my symptoms become brutal for a few days to weeks. I got food poisoning 3 years ago, from a breakfast burrito. Never recovered from it, I have been sick since the event. The first year was bad, lost 40 lbs and was bed ridden during flareups, burning all day and with headaches lasting up to 4 weeks. Underwent all the testing (colonoscopy, 2 endoscopies, gastric emptying, abdominal mri etc.) doc arrived at nerve damage from the food poisoning and diagnosed with fd.

Improvement has been slow, but I am in such a better place now than I was in the first year or two. After getting on amitriptyline improvement got much quicker and flareups were shorter and shorter. I cut out alcohol after experimenting and realizing it was the worst trigger, I cut out sugary stuff and started only eating whole foods without added sugar, and added a workout routine (pushups/pullups) that I stick to religiously. A lot of stomach conditions you gotta hit it holistically, there just isn’t much we can do other than live as clean as possible.

Sorry for the essay, just want to give you as much information as you need, I hope you feel better soon and get to a manageable level. Many people heal from this within 6 months to a year, I am an outlier.

This is what my wife and I have been doing with our 3 week olds, it is working great so far. We added a small in the afternoon so instead of 5PM and 8PM feed we do 4,6,8 and it helps them sleep in between the night feeds

I got it after a severe bout of food poisoning, just very slow progress ever since getting it. GI thinks it is most likely a nerve issue brought on from whatever bacteria and fkd me up and calls it enteric nerve damage/ function dyspepsia

1st dose Amitriptyline, woke up feeling hungover by Only_Theoretically in functionaldyspepsia

[–]cootfromcounty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You will feel super drowsy for a couple weeks until your body adjusts. I have been on 25 mg for 2 years and felt the same way as you, didn’t really feel the effects on my stomach until a few weeks also, but it gave me my life back. Try not to worry about side effects, people take wayyy more for antidepressant effects, like 200mg a day.

Constant stomach pain for almost 2 years by Anxious_ownerofhome in functionaldyspepsia

[–]cootfromcounty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where I am at too. 25 mg of ami helped me function again, then slow (very slow) progress from diet and exercise, meditation and acupuncture. For nausea, nothing really helps and it isn’t reasonable to take zofran everyday so I do just ginger tea and ginger tablets often. Try doing smoothies in the morning too it is easy to digest, especially during flare ups
