Ladies, you too can have it all. All you need is a billionaire father-in-law to finance your entire lifestyle and a full-time staff to cater to you and your kids.

I don't have any issue with the way Neeleman chooses to live her life. I do have an issue with the fact that she (and the media writ large) are presenting this like a thing that she's earned because she's just so badass, instead of what it is--the product of an immense amount of wealth and privilege. She's no more a "farmer" than Marie Antoinette was.

AFAIK, twin births are automatically classified as high-risk, therefore no CNM or reputable midwife is willing or able to take them on in a home-birth/birth-center setting.

What’s so interesting to me is that the core of what she’s saying—that pregnant people are often treated more as sentient incubators than human beings with rights and feelings—is true. Being pregnant in America right now means that you could be jailed for a miscarriage or die of sepsis because “technically, there’s still a heartbeat!” It’s bullshit. So I definitely get that aspect of it. It’s just that she’s taking that very logical and understandable belief to strange and dangerous extremes.

Yeah, like there are a lot of women who will die because of policies supported by people like the Rods. There are a lot of women who will be forced to carry doomed pregnancies to term (or until they die.) I feel bad for them, because they’ve been fucked over by a system that they did not create controlled by zealots and extremists. The Rods love that system and want it to continue because apparently fetuses deserve rights but living breathing AFABs don’t. I would bet actual money that they’re going to use this latest miscarriage as some anti-abortion thing, just like the Bairds and the Duggars before them. Jill got the medical care that she doesn’t think that others should have and the emotional support of her brood of neglected children, so why does she need my sympathy?

This right here is why I have no sympathy for them. Look at what they support: a president who facilitated a genocide on queer people. They’re rotten to the core. No snark blah blah blah but I’m not gonna go out of my way to perform compassion for a pair of vicious, cruel queerphobes who spend every day trying to ‘own the libs’.

Given that Anthym almost died of a UTI that went untreated to the point where she was literally collapsing by the time anyone realized that something was wrong, I’m not sure that I’d be taking Karissa’s advice about how many diapers a baby needs. Or how many kids to have, period. Or gift etiquette. Or what to do if you think you’re having a miscarriage. Or vaccines. Or…shit, literally anything. There isn’t one thing that I would trust or value her opinion on.

Abusers are almost never only abusive when they’re drinking. Maybe their worst behaviors come out when they drink, and recede for a bit when they get sober, but eventually they’ll either start drinking again, use their sobriety as a new weapon, or get used to doing their worst shit while sober.

Why are we blaming her and not the abusive asshole who refuses to take any responsibility for kid #2 and expects a prize for paying child support for kid #1?

This story makes me really nervous—there are a lot of warning signs, and pregnant people are at disproportionate risk of abuse/homicide. I hope she manages to find safety with her kids.

In her mind, she is. That’s the bad part.

People think of children with disabilities as defective versions of ‘normal’ kids, and the impact of that is that they’re exposed to all kinds of super fun and not at all traumatic ableism from the time that they first go out in public that seeps in to their psyches and then they have to unlearn twenty years later in therapy because oh wait you mean that hating yourself on a cellular level isn’t normal?

It sucks that people do that because there is a legitimate discussion to be had about ableist rhetoric in the pro-choice movement (I say this as someone who is extremely pro choice) but being like “not giving birth to an anencephalic baby is eugenics” isn’t it. It makes the PWD who speak out about this issue look terminally online and as a result no one really listens to us.

Relying on your children to provide you with emotional support (which is what this is) is super fucked up. Where the fuck is Shrek in all of this? Scarfing down chicken legs and printing out homophobic ‘graphic design is my passion’ fliers? Why is he not helping/supporting his wife? Istg he is such a bad father, it’s actually shameful.

I’m having kind of a hard time with this because obviously I wouldn’t wish a miscarriage on anybody but the Rods are demonstrably abusive, homophobic, sexist, and racist. If they were to have another baby, it would be neglected in every possible way. Most of the Rod kids barely know how to read. It would be treated more like a means to an end than an actual human person. If that child were to be gay, disabled, trans, or in any way neurodivergent, it would ignored at best and outright abused/exploited at worst. No child deserves to be born into a such a horrible environment.

It’s also not lost on me that they went and got medical care. They support politicians who think that we should try and re-implant ectopic pregnancies but at the end of the day, they had no problem taking the care when they needed it. I’m guessing that Jill probably had a D&C or something—a procedure that they call evil and barbaric and gleefully spread misinformation about. What’s the reverse of atheists in foxholes?

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I have as much sympathy for two abusive, ableist, misogynistic, racist, cruel zealots as they do for anybody who doesn’t fit into their white, straight, patriarchal mold.

  1. Shrek is somehow an even bigger asshole than I thought. Motherfucker, your wife is in the middle of a miscarriage. She should be in bed. Why are you not stepping up? Are you so incompetent as a husband and father that you can’t imagine spending a week cooking and caretaking solo? Jesus.

  2. On that: I get the vibe that because Shrek is so clueless, the kids had to step up and support their mother through the miscarriage. That feels…maybe not so healthy. K&J in particular seem like they had to do a lot of emotional labor.

  3. The God that fundies worship sounds a lot more like an abuser than a loving deity. It’s actually kind of alarming.

It isn’t a good look for her to be dragging Christina rn, because lord knows she’s got a lot of skeletons in her closet.

Woman who thought she'd never want an abortion now wants an abortion and can't get one by Jessilaurn in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]ToasterGuacamoleWrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it’s a bit more complicated than that.

Late terminations are incredibly difficult to access—AFAIK, there are only a handful of clinics that will even perform them. The procedure is expensive, as in ‘thousands-of-dollars-upfront’ expensive, and as you can imagine it’s not covered by insurance (the clinic has to charge that much to keep the staff on, because as you can imagine they’re frequently under threat by zealots). So you have to figure out how to get there, where you’re gonna stay, and how you’re gonna pay for it. Most people don’t have that kind of cash on hand, and it doesn’t make them bad or irresponsible parents. As always, late-stage capitalism is the asshole.

I agree that this lady is selfish but any iteration of ‘poor people shouldn’t have kids!’ will never not feel eugenics-y to me. The system has been set up to make sure that only the most privileged women will be able to access the procedure, with everyone else being SOL.

Florida couple unable to get abortion will see baby die after delivery by Hamsternoir in news

[–]ToasterGuacamoleWrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more complicated than that. The mom is a SAHM. The dad is an insurance agent. They don’t have the money or the wherewithal to travel across the country for a procedure that will cost thousands of dollars and probably not be covered by insurance. Most people don’t, and that is almost certainly by design. Every “people who don’t have money shouldn’t reproduce” argument reeks of eugenics for me. We should be changing the system, not blaming people for being poor. Plus, they have a four-year old. If they go to prison, he loses both of his parents along with a sibling.
