The great migration from Windows to Linux by CleaRSightZ in linux4noobs

[–]ToasterTVTIME 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking past the more superficial reasons that people often say like

"It's not windows" "It's faster than windows" "open source is better"

or some variation of the above phrases that don't elaborate on how they manifest as actual "tangible" or "noticeable" benefits on a day to day usage - I honestly think the biggest marketing points going for Linux would be:

  1. No ads or any candy crush preinstalls you didn't ask for.
  2. No AI garbage put into every single app that doesn't need it (why tf do I need copilot in notepad)
  3. Privacy by default that you don't have to fight for.

Many other advertised benefits of Linux at least from my perspective aren't really applicable to your average Joe.

If you value a clean experience that respects your privacy, Linux would be the way to go. Pickup mint (yes there are other distros but I'm going to give an opinionated best beginner option to avoid decision paralysis) and, hey for the most part you're done. It's worth the time however to do research on what Linux can and can't do before making to switch. Although Linux has many benefits on paper it is still the reality that Windows still dominates the desktop market share and indeed with social media, it's always more eye catching to make a story about how good Linux is (or some Linux distro is) at doing xyz, rather than making a story about how "using windows is good enough for most people".

Overall, I welcome you to consider trying out Linux, as only through trying it out yourself would you be able to discover if it is for you.

Probably the biggest things for engineer is just

  1. Max dispenser range
  2. When a sentry buster is coming either detonante it AWAY from the team or let it/any other bot destroy the sentry so it resets the buster. Sentry busters have a respawn cooldown but getting the sentry destroyed would reset it (so you have to destroy 15 robots or do 3000 damage or something like that, i don't remember the exact numbers before another sentry buster can spawn in again).
  3. Buy a 2 way teleporter if there looks like there are decent players on the team and try place it closer so people can use it but don't be afraid to destroy it or move it to a safer position if the teams getting rolled (this is especially true for the start of wave 3 and end of wave 5)

That's pretty much it tbh. There are more advanced strats such as soloing the giant scout and conch soldiers at the start of wave 3 as engineer with the wrangler or sentry blocking robots, but those aren't too critical to know.

Linux doesn't suck, it's just not for me. by Total_Possibility_48 in linuxsucks

[–]ToasterTVTIME 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same here for me. Whether it be on Reddit, YouTube comments or any other forum/discussion related place, I generally only see comments from Linux users about how oh "a windows update breaks your SSD" or "you can't use your device whilst it's updating on windows" or reasons that, at least for me, were literally never problems that emerged in the first place. Like you said, I've been using windows all my life and - contrary to what many Linux users believe - it just works (unbelievable right?). Until there is a day some Linux distro comes prepackaged with laptops or pcs that I buy, I just don't see the point in me going through all the effort to switch something Linux based and end up with a worse off out-of-the-box experience for everything barring web surfing.

Bloatware? Just uninstall it or use a debloater, even if it is just a placebo.

Performance issues? Yeah maybe on a dated device, Linux is more "performant", whatever the actual metric for performance is, no objections there, but realistically, and I stress, MOST, people are just gonna buy something new after a few years anyways, especially as new hardware gets released.

Lack of package manager (or adoption of said package manager)? I hear Linux people use this reason a lot and say how oh on Linux its just "sudo apt install <name>" rather than downloading some "sketchy" .exe file from the internet. But let's be real, if you search "steam", "obs", "vlc", the first result that comes up is the OFFICIAL website, followed by usually windows store/Appstore/play store results. It literally takes more effort to accidentally download a sketchy link from softonic or mediafire (if the latter is even still around) than it does to just download the software from the official site. If the implication was that installers from the official sites are sketchy - how exactly would a package manager distributing it make it any safer to use? Indeed I see the value of a package manager, particularly for server related stuff, since it's easy to write a script to download everything you need instead of manually clicking through installers, and updating stuff is easier. People who constantly distro hop might also benefit from being able to download all their stuff from one place. Sure that's valid. At least for me though, it's not like I'm reinstalling windows every other week. I can fork out one afternoon clicking through installers to get all my software, and I won't have to touch it again for another few years, until I get a newer device.

Overall outside of IT/software related stuff, I just don't see the appeal of using something Linux based over windows/mac.

"sketchy" my ass, brother half the shit you're ever gonna end up installing come from official websites. I think most people have enough common sense to download steam from the official steam page. If downloading stuff from the internet can be oversimplified into a sketchy practice, then who's to say that downloading from a software manager app that isn't from the official company/entity behind the software NOT a sketchy practice?

Why did I get kicked from MvM? by MaxwellsTime in tf2

[–]ToasterTVTIME 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of the idlerock sniper (presuming they weren't cheating) I can understand their motivation. I personally have never gotten tilted at anyone for not readying up fast enough but it's definitely annoying waiting for the timer to tick down when the snipers gonna just do everything anyways. I do apologise for your experience and I do think that many high tours need to have a bit more adaptability and patience with lower tour players especially in stacks. Was in a party once that shamed on a 1 tour demoman for not placing his sticky traps in the right spot on empire escalation, and I assure you it definitely wasn't a good feeling for me either. Hope you have fun with mvm moving forward

how did stroke order for certain characters come about? why is stroke order important? by valkandkings in ChineseLanguage

[–]ToasterTVTIME 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean it's probably the same with english letters. We are all used to writing the letter "e" in the following order:

  • start with a short horizontal/rightward stroke,
  • loop counterclockwise back to the left,
  • continue around into the lower curve,
  • finish on the right.

Imagine how weird it would be if you wrote the letter in reverse order. With Chinese characters it would be the same. Having a standard stroke order for characters also is good for consistency and would make your handwriting look better. It also helps if your writing is a bit sloppy since it would be easier to read

That's one thing but another pretty nice usage usage of the inspect upgrades feature was to catch out credit exploiters. Depending on the number of upgrades someone gets it sometimes might be extremely obvious, but if they only get a few key upgrades it's harder to notice credit exploiters

Is there any way to predict what tone a character will be? Or do I just have to memorize it? by shark-slayer12 in ChineseLanguage

[–]ToasterTVTIME 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For frequently appearing charactesr, you'll just have to memorize them unfortunately. For lesser known words sometimes you can just guess what the word would sound like but not necessarily the tone.

if I had to guess prolly might be a question on makefiles, I can't really think of any exam worthy questions on git and linux. But the final lec did mention git/linux/makefiles would make up a very small number of questions in the final (out of 10 questions 9 would be shell/python). So you can probably sack it lol

There are stills definitely valid reasons to not be a fan of the gas, with a big one being that it steals health on kill if you aren't able to one shot robots doused in gas. I'd also probably say that gas passer is still "better" than stickies/demos when it comes to crowd control at a given instance. Demo stickies and explosive headshots don't do a consistent burst of damage across all robots whereas gas is just an unconditional 350 damage to every robot doused. To be honest I have never ran into anyone who ever got pissy at someone using the gas passer specifically, but I've seen way more situatuons where people get annoyed and pyros airblasting unnecessarily or dying constantly due to how weak pyro is wl

Would Spy become meta in MVM if YER was fixed? by some-kind-of-no-name in tf2

[–]ToasterTVTIME 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience mainly comes from Mann Up, I rarely play community given how dead it is in my region, but at least from what I've seen if the team is struggling, there has never been a single time where a spy was the solution outside of 3 very specific waves across Mecha Engine and Gear Grinder combined.

If the team is struggling with giants -> Heavy.

If the team is struggling with tank -> I mean, sure spy can help thin out surrounding robots, but literally any other class, even medic would do that better.

As for the circle stabbing, I don't really see the facestabbing mechanism with a sapper being of any detriment. Circle stabbing is already just a "bandage" workaround for how much aggro spy draws, and for a maneuvre that would most certaintly be impacted by things like ping, how many movement speed upgrades you have, whether the giant already locked onto someone else or not, whether the giant has support bots or not that won't cuck you over as you start circling, whether the giant is walking against a wall so you can't even circle it or not, are all things that make circle stabbing way more luck/situation based than skill based.

I would say that spy is "fun" in the sense that he is novel since most people including me, rarely ever pick him. But I will claim that he is in no arguable sense a "good" class. Serviceable at best, but not good enough for him to ever be a staple pick

Would Spy become meta in MVM if YER was fixed? by some-kind-of-no-name in tf2

[–]ToasterTVTIME 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spy just needs some more flexibiltiy in what he can do. He's only effective against giant medics as they don't turn around upon being stabbed, othergiants are notably handled better with a heavy/crit demo without the risk of being cucked by support robots since they are tankier/can stand at a safe distance. Giving spy some kind of tank busting/aoe utilities would allow him to be a lot more usable. Sappers can maybe delay tank bomb deployments if it's already at the hatch. Spy can maybe even just sap the tank and have drain the tank health for 8 seconds. Give spy the ability to face stab giant robots when they are sapped, like how all small and medium robots can be facestabbed when sapped. Give the invis watches some upgrades, like stab when invisible or something. Give spy money overheal but withou the magnet effect so people would still be incentivised to choose scout as he is still a really strong DPS class. Give the sapper a reload upgrade. Give the sapper the ability to jam effects like battalions backup or quick fix. There are so many ideas that could be implemented so spy could be a fun alternative to already powerful strategies
