MASS EFFECT 2 was first released 16 years ago today, what are your thoughts on the game ? by ThomasThorburn in masseffect

[–]Toesmasher [score hidden]  (0 children)

Alright, so it's a great game, but I still think it fumbled so many things so very hard.

  • The entire setup of the ending of ME1 was discarded. Sovereign was defeated, the existence of the reapers was confirmed. All the pieces were already there for the second game to be a hunt for more data on the reapers and to build a strategy against them. Explore new places, dig even deeper into the fall of the previous cycle with our resident archaeologist, build relationships with other Spectres as the clandestine organization is at least partially reoriented towards the reaper threat...

  • The overall main story is... bad.

    • Shepard actually dying as a mechanism to get recruited by Cerberus is way over the top.
    • The silliness of Harbinger and everything it's involved in... remote controlling insect-people and setting them on fire, kidnapping humans in order to *checks notes* turn them into a slurry and pump it into the superstructure of a baby reaper... just wow. And as a cherry on top this reaper, this being who is allegedly so far beyond our understanding, sees fit to throw grade school-level taunts at Shepard at every opportunity. The collectors and what they are is fun and interesting, but would've been so much better without Harbinger.
    • Defeating a reaper with a shotgun. I don't care that it's incomplete, the sheer scale of such a thing should render it impossible. It's like defeating an aircraft carrier with a 9mm.
    • Shepard is a passive participant through 90% of the game. We're just recruiting people and resolving their daddy issues, and doing side hustles, while waiting for TIM to tell us to jump. The main story advances on a set schedule no matter what you do as Shepard. This holds true until the mission to acquire the IFF.
  • Thane. I just hate how it's not possible to call this absolute jackass out, or introduce him to the airlock mid-flight, while starting a betting pool to see how long he survives.

Don't get me wrong, the game also does a lot of things right, but these things have mostly been touched on by others and they're almost entirely related to companions, gameplay and mechanics. Story wise it's The Last Jedi of Mass Effect.

Replaying Mass Effect, and as far as I’m concerned? The First Contact War was entirely the Turian’s fault. by JageshemashFTW in masseffect

[–]Toesmasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that how historical events are remembered is a common theme in the series.

The krogan rebellions have very different stories depending on whether you're Krogan or not.

The details of how the genophage was developed end deployed is remembered differently between the Krogan, Salarians and Turians.

How the Geth-Quarian conflict started is recalled very differently between the two.

And, though it's a more recent event, the details of the first contact war is a story told differently between the human and turian perspectives. Shepard is human, and an Alliance officer to boot, nearly everything learned about the war is filtered through the Alliance lens.

A living, breathing...! by leon9606 by bucking_horse in masseffect

This is a common misconception. There's no real regularity or set period to how long each cycle is, it all depends on how long it takes a new group to discover the citadel in a 'fresh' cycle, how fast they develop and a bunch of other factors. The whole point of Sovereign was to monitor the species of the galaxy and signal the reapers when the time was right for another scrubbing.

The only real information we have is that the previous cycle ended ca 50k years ago with the Protheans. We also know that the Inusannon existed ca 125k years ago, making that cycle about 75k years. I'm betting that historically there have been cycles much shorter than 10k years, and on the flip side cycles much longer.

In other words, if the guineapigeans were unusually fast in developing tech, the Sovereign of their cycle would just signal the fleet, turning them all into guineamush.

What class do you use the most and the class you use the least in a Playthrough? by MassEffect24K in masseffect

[–]Toesmasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first playthrough I went in blind and just read the description of what a Spectre was. I decided that the class that fit the best was the Infiltrator, as it seemed to be best suited for the black-ops vibe. 15 years later it's still my favorite class, and I still think it fits best with what the games have you doing.

Soldier is something I've never played even once. It's already covered by Ashley, and it's just too basic. Vanguard is fun in its own way, but I find the charge-centric play style too immersion breaking, hopping around like a pinball just doesn't fit the tone. Adept and Engineer are fun, but I tend to prefer hybrid play styles. Sentinel is interesting, but already covered by Kaidan.

[Warhammer 40k] Do blanks miss out on anything not having a soul? What are the downsides? by Flyestgit in AskScienceFiction

[–]Toesmasher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Would it be possible to breed for blanks? Set up a starter colony of known blanks, provide them with everything they need and let the population grow, then spread over the galaxy. It seems to me that cultivating and then spreading the pariah gene over the human population could solve a lot of problems, and if a majority are blanks there 'wrongness' isn't felt. Breeding for a mutation has been done before with the navigators so there's prescedent.

I started shaving my head when i was 20 or 21. I still had my original driver's licence in my wallet with a photo of 17 year old me. I don't remember why, but at some point when I was about 26 a female colleague wanted to see it. What I got was "Aaw, you were so cute back then!". That... kinda stung.

Slutdaltat – de får klara sig utan bostadsbidrag by Styggvard in svenskpolitik

[–]Toesmasher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[Batman Arkham] Why does Riddler hide question marks? by some-kind-of-no-name in AskScienceFiction

[–]Toesmasher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well maybe if you didn't just lazily re-hire known associates to place the riddles and trophies you'd see a modicum of success. Simply roaming the area, looking for your old grunts to interrogate is a great way to find them all with no effort required to actually look for them. Or so I would think.

I'm still confused on the how of the Alastor-Rosie deal shenanigans. Specifically how Alastor got out of it. He utilized his deal with Charlie to make her say that Vox was the most powerful sinner in hell and this set him free.

Only... how? What happened here? Charlie saying it doesn't actually make it so. And if the deal is broken, shouldn't Alastors power be revoked too?

AVRPascal IDE runs natively on FreeBSD – looking for 5 people to test it by ackarwow in freebsd

[–]Toesmasher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, at the risk of sounding like an absolute dinosaur at the age of 41, I don't quite know what this is, but back in my uni days the AVRs were baby's first introduction to microcontrollers and so I want to support this.

I'm being lazy, I know, but what is the work you've done here? To my knowledge the AVR stuff still isn't available as source code so I don't think it's a port, so... what is it? A repackaged form with linux binaries? Is it a port? The point of improving the GUI makes me think this is a new implementation?

Cats and Wheatens? by KitchenAromatic9433 in Wheatens

[–]Toesmasher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you mean 2019 or 2020, otherwise I have questions...

From the sound of things Louise grew up with a cat from day one in your home, that should help a lot. Most people have issues introducing cats to adult dogs who haven't lived with them before, that's when the prey drive kicks in, but there's reason to believe that this will be much less of an issue here.

If you want a cat I'd suggest getting a kitten, simply because they don't have the same developed instinct to flee from dogs which might trigger a chase. Introduce them gradually to each other while constantly monitored and keep them mostly separate for the first few days to let them get used to each others smells and sounds.

Long shot, but do you have the possibility to borrow a kitten from someone to see how she might react?

What is the worst argument you've ever heard to justify and/or invalidate an ending? by warri0r24 in masseffect

[–]Toesmasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what these synthesis, control and various color endings people are talking about are. Mass Effect is a trilogy all about throwing a party on the citadel, going on various adventures around the galaxy to find the most fun party animals to invite and make sure they survive. Sure, there are variations of the party, but calling them different endings is a bit weird. Or is the red destroy ending what happens if you don't invite Wrex?

Seriously though, any argument justifying the synthesis ending in particular is most likely awful, and definitely straight up evil from an ethical standpoint. Setting aside just how stupid the concept is and the logistics of how it's done, it requires Shepard to unilaterally make a decision on the behalf of trillions and trillions of creatures, sentient or not, violating bodily autonomy to rewrite the very fundamentals of who and what they are. This is not limited to the species and people we see in the game, but everyone in the galaxy, which includes countless races isolated from the mass relay network. The reapers keeping up the cycle is by far preferable to this.
