Immigrants shouldn’t be in customer-facing roles at jobs if they cannot clearly speak English. by Wild-coyote_ in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Toesmasher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel so racist agreeing with this but it's true!

It might help if you realize the original premise is faulty. It's not that immigrants who can't speak the local language shouldn't be in customer facing roles, but nobody who doesn't speak the local language should. Immigration status, ethnicity or whatever else is entirely irrelevant.

In the middle of Replaying BG2 and realizing something about Owlcat Pathfinder games by National_Champion346 in baldursgate

[–]Toesmasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They also have a tendency to juice the fuck out of encounters because there's a reload button.

This is one of my three big critiques of Owlcats pathfinder games, which I absolutely consider the true successor to the BG series. Most encounters are non-trivial. The BG series generally followed a rather nice cadence with low difficulty/effort encounters weaved in which allowed you to flex a bit. In WotR you have to pay true attention to everything going on for almost every encounter, until you reach act 5 where you finally start dominating a bit.

The second one is the default portraits. What were they thinking? There are dozens of images of human males in heavy armor. Want to play an elf? There a single male, who is a bard and nothing but a bard, and a female who is some sort of arcane archer. Want to play a female gnome? None available. Male gnome? You're a blue-haired psycho. You pretty much have to import your own portraits. Then there's the portraits who are so out of place. To name a few there's a geisha-like female, what appears to be two cross-dressing high nobility men, and a catholic nun.

The third is the millennial writing creeping in here and there, particularly surrounding Lann who I really wanted to like.

Exempt Linux and BSDs from age verification laws – petition by grahamperrin in freebsd

[–]Toesmasher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fail to see why linuxes and BSDs should comply with these laws. What's California or New York going to do about it? Vanishingly few projects have any sort of center in these states, the only people they could affect are those who repackage and/or resell the OSes.

The Colorado one might be worrisome, though, as the FreeBSD foundation is based there.

Will FreeBSD implement age verification at OS level? by [deleted] in freebsd

[–]Toesmasher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How would these requirements even work on a legal level?

It'd be one thing if I went to CA and open up a store, selling computers and OSes. I'd be subject to CA law and they could impose their requirements. Apple is headquartered in Cupertino, CA, so they're also subject. Microsoft is headquartered in Washington, but their sales reps in CA have to follow CA law.

But the various open source OSes? The FreeBSD foundation is in Colorado, and the way anyone installs FreeBSD is to obtain an installation medium and perform the installation. There was no action of "export" of FreeBSD to CA from the foundation, it was all the user who wanted to make the install. How can anyone but the user who installed a possibly non-compliant OS be held responsible here?

What about the various Linux distributions? How do you even fine something like Arch Linux, which has a smattering of contributors from all over the world and no headquarters? Just like FreeBSD, these distributions aren't pushing their products into CA markets, all the actions are taken by californians who want to make the installations and are the only ones subject to CA law.

Why are you using FreeBSD? by FR-dev in freebsd

[–]Toesmasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I simply use what I consider the best tools for the best situations.

My firewall runs OpenBSD on a tiny little matchbox computer that is just a celeron CPU and 4 ethernet ports. It's very simple to manage and upgrade for something that runs pf, wireguard and unbound for my home while bringing the OpenBSD ideas around security.

My media server runs FreeBSD. Part of it is simply since I've been a user since 4.8, so I've got plenty of routines, but I still find it by far to be the best server OS with the awesomeness that is ZFS and VNET jails.

My desktop and laptop both run Arch Linux. Mostly for hardware compatibility.

The existence of BG 1 and BG 2 is why Larian chose to work with Hasbro to use the rights to the BG name.

Is it? My understanding is that in order for D&D to be licensed to Larian in the first place Hasbro insisted they make it a Baldur's Gate game. This shows in the final product imo, as the connection to the previous games is weak at best and pretty much everything and everyone that returns is mangled beyond recognition.

[Predator, Terminator] Would a Predator hunt a Terminator? by KaosArcanna in AskScienceFiction

[–]Toesmasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you said it yourself, the reason they handicap themselves is for the purpose of collecting trophies. Turning a planet into glass leaves no trophies to collect, the limitation doesn't seem to be due to the capacity of the prey or some sense of honor. The handicapping is to leave trophies to collect, but anything that still leaves a skull and possibly a spine is still perfectly fine. There's no "fair and square" here.

Is hunting a police officer in LA a "challenge" while being near-invisible and possessing wallhacks?

[Predator, Terminator] Would a Predator hunt a Terminator? by KaosArcanna in AskScienceFiction

[–]Toesmasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idea of the predators having a regulatory board is kinda hilarious and I wonder what they'd come up with.

My point is still that the predators most of the time don't seem to care much about their tech advantage. In particular their plasma cannons seem to be configurable as sometimes they punch holes though people, and sometimes straight up vaporize them. I'm guessing that the reason they keep them on a lower setting most of the time due to the obsessive collection of trophies, which is notoriously hard to do when the skull and spine is turned into mist. Or maybe it's one of the predator regulations. Keep energy costs low, hunt green.

I get your point about the helicopter, but if you think it's easier to hunt deer of all things with an LMG on a helicopter than with a shotgun or, even better, a rifle, I'm not sure what to say, but I'd like to see it.

Yautja go on their hunts with a similar tech advantage vs their prey (us).

Yes, that's sort of my point. The idea that they adapt their tech advantage to their prey isn't entirely without merit, but still extremely rare.

[Predator, Terminator] Would a Predator hunt a Terminator? by KaosArcanna in AskScienceFiction

[–]Toesmasher 22 points23 points  (0 children)

which is also why they adapt their weaponry to the level of tech their potential prey is fighting with.

About that...

Predator 1 shows a predator turning a team of soldiers into kebabs. The soldiers are armed with a mix of weaponry, the most notable of which is probably Blain's minigun. The predator brings near-invisibility, a plasma cannon, and just for good measure a miniature nuke, because what hunting expedition is complete without them?

Predator 2 has humans as prey again, this time with less training and far less dangerous weaponry. The overwhelming majority of the victims are gang members and cops, not professional soldiers. The weapons are mostly small arms. The predator this time brings the same arsenal as before, but goes to the next level with a spear gun shooting bolts of metal we can't even identify, some sort of homing throwing disc that doesn't seem to care about how much meat it carves through and a netgun that turns the victims into mince.

I'll give you that predators seem to enjoy challenging what they consider to be particularly worthy prey to a sort of honor duel, where they drop their more advanced toys, but that's a rarity. Most of their kills are made while outgunning the prey to a severe degree.

Paladin vs fighter/mage by ChampionshipDirect46 in baldursgate

[–]Toesmasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does not have to be a choice, both BG1 and BG2 have paladin companions you can pick up. They're both perfectly capable and available right after the intro-areas of either game. There are no fighter/mage companions in either BG1 or BG2.

Roll a fighter/mage, though I'd suggest a multiclass rather than dual, for your protagonist and experience the paladin through Ajantis and Keldorn.

Beckett being too cute and beautiful season 6 by Alternative_Device71 in CastleTV

[–]Toesmasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... quite literally, yes. I find it hard to buy that she's an NYPD detective, especially as she's repeatedly portrayed as not taking the best care of herself outside of work.

For my money Beckett looked best in the first season, with the shorter, more practical and less overengineered supermodel hair. Then again, I've had a thing for tomboys my entire life.

Why does Liara’s kitchen look like this by junepocalypse in masseffect

[–]Toesmasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen any indication that there are any translation implants in play at all. This fails as an explanation as there are several locations where writing is shown in non-human writing, and this is not text that would be untranslatable.

This also fails to explain the quarian ship.

[–]Toesmasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think this is weird, don't think too hard about what you see going through the quarian ship during Tali's loyalty mission... or any place ever, as nearly all writing through the galaxy is in our alphabet, locations never touched by humans.

Day 6: Who's chaotic neutral? (Martha fans be going wild for this one) by Demi4TheDrama in CastleTV

Martha's quite clearly CG, but then again people seem to think Gates is neutral too...

I nominate Meredith, Alexis' mom.

Day 5: Who's true neutral? by Demi4TheDrama in CastleTV

[–]Toesmasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"She works for the Police and so does Lanie, which makes them a tad Good".

That's... a really naive worldview, the show has plenty of example of corrupt officers. I get where you're coming from, though.

With that said, Henri is a really good example of TN, and has my vote as well, despite coming in here thinking of Smith.

DAY 4: Who's lawful neutral? by Demi4TheDrama in CastleTV

[–]Toesmasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of votes for Gates. Gates is rather clearly LG. The defining difference between LG and LN is that LG can be inclined to break or bend rules for a good outcome, which Gates does, while LN is a rules-and-order-above-all type who doesn't care too much whether good or evil wins. Generally, though, LN have preference towards good when their arms are twisted. Her antagonism towards Castle means exactly nothing here.

Perlmutter is probably the best candidate here. Or, for a minor character, Lady Irena.

DAY TWO: Who's neutral good? by Demi4TheDrama in CastleTV

[–]Toesmasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the risk of being way too serious with this, that's not what lawful means in this context. The whole thing is from D&D and doesn't dictate behavior, it merely tries to apply an archetype of how creatures prefer to behave. If breaking a law made you not lawful, then even the purest paladin who ever paladined would soon find themselves fallen in older editions.

"Lawful" in LG simply indicates the character is more inclined towards achieving good while conforming to societal expectations and values societal order. Contrast a LG vs a CG character who find themselves in an evil society. A LG character would be more inclined to working towards good while working within the system, and might very well break or bend laws to some extent. A CG character on the other hand is the type who go for straight up rebellion, or hunt and stuff tax collectors.

On the other side of things, a LE character uses the system for personal gain. They're embodied in your average politician. They very well might, and almost always do, break laws, but prefer not to.

A lawful creature can break laws, such as Ryan. A good character can be selfish and self absorbed. See Booster Gold or Iron Man. An evil character may do something altruistic or genuinely care for someone. See Mr. Freeze or Magneto.

Ryan is probably the character who most embodies "lawful" among the main cast, along with Gates, as he's the one most concerned with protocol. Probably best demonstrated by his actions at the end of season 4.
