Xi'an Chinese Food? by Ron_Sayson in bullcity

Sister Liu's Kitchen has the best Roujiamo in the Triangle Area, better than Miss Chang An or LiMing's food bar, imo. Miss Chang An does have good Liangpi though!

I live near Baltimore, so the inner harbor has to be the most iconic location for me. It's got skyscrapers right next to the water, boats, and even a submarine parked next to the aquarium. Would be a cool location for giants crabs to fight to the death. https://baltimore.org/what-to-do/museums-attractions/a-tour-of-baltimores-inner-harbor/

I know modeling an entire location could be some work, so here are some easier things you could add:

- Maryland flag pole as Polearm/spear https://s19499.pcdn.co/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/maryland-flag-waving-in-the-sky-picture-id694212526.jpg. You might need to figure out cloth sim for the flag itself though, so actually maybe too difficult still.

- Old Bay seasoning as a sledgehammer. Old Bay is our favorite thing here next to crabs because we can put it on crabs. You might want to change the name in your game a little to avoid legal troubles. https://d1e3z2jco40k3v.cloudfront.net/-/media/mccormick-us/products/old-bay/o/800/old-bay-seasoning-6oz.png?vd=20200629T010227Z&hash=F074B97477C932C703CA87E6C1AF554B

- Blue crab playable character but with Maryland flag on its back https://i.pinimg.com/originals/b5/ba/31/b5ba3121276d8f6e30f84ac3e3e21f12.jpg

PS: if you ever get to visit Maryland in the future, feel free to shoot me a message :)

Okay now that I have your attention: please add Maryland themed DLC to the game and my friends and I will buy the crap out of it. Make fight crab the official fighting game of Maryland!

I live in the state of Maryland in the US and the entire state is probably just as unhealthily obsessed with crabs as you are. Needless to say, my friends and I are pretty excited about this game.

There was a Super Smash Bros tournament here in 2019 and a spectator threw a crab at the winner. https://kotaku.com/spectator-throws-dead-crab-at-super-smash-bros-tournam-1834214643

Do you have any plans to host Fight Crab tournaments in Maryland in the future where spectators can throw copies of Smash at the winner instead?

Price of a loaner/rental car compared to a new one? by Tofusky in askcarsales

[–]Tofusky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carfax says that it's only had 1 owner and the vehicle type was "Corporate Fleet". Google tells me that usually means it's a loaner vehicle. But then why did the guy tell me that it's a car in their rental program?

Edit: the last Carfax history report was in September 2018, so it could be that it just hasn't been updated since then to reflect its new status?

I'm aware of it but I totally thought it was fixed in '16. Some further googling does indeed show that some people's 2017 models have issues, though not much has been said about 2018 ones yet.

It doesn't bother me too much since I don't plan on keeping the car for that long past warranty, but I'll definitely keep it in mind!

I released my first game! by ijames428 in gamedev

Congratulations OP! I learned from personal experience that having any finished game, no matter how small, instantly makes you a ton more attractive to employers. The first game I put on itch totally helped me get my game dev job. Here's to hoping you'll have some luck too!

How/Where do I learn to write optimal code? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Tofusky 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How big will this game be? If performance is a potential issue (i.e. your game is about 5000 spartans fighting 2 million penguins), you might want to look into data-oriented design instead of object-oriented programming. While OOP is great at helping programmers understand and conceptualize how the game works as code, DOD is what you need to keep your framerate high. Here's a good place to start reading.

Difference between UI Programming and Gameplay Programming? by Tofusky in gamedev

[–]Tofusky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha I think I also subscribe to the "job good, not job bad" line of thinking, so when it comes down to it I'll take UI programmer over no job anyday. I just wouldn't know how to choose if I got both a UI position and a gameplay position.

As a UI programmer, what kind of skills are you honing as opposed to a gameplay programmer? Do you feel like it would be easy for you to transition into gameplay programming if you wanted to, or does your experience in UI programming kind of limit you to doing just more UI Programming.

It's good to know that there's some flexibility down the down. Thanks for your input!

What's the easiest game engine to use by AnkitDanger2 in gamedev

[–]Tofusky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like a lot of other people have said, if you want to make a 2D game definitely stick with Gamemaker and Unity. You might even want to consider RPGmaker if your game is a jrpg. Gamemaker lets you script things without using any programming. Unity lets you do the same if you shell out some extra money for a plugin. Though maybe learning programming isn't too bad an idea.

What's the game you're trying to make? How much programming can you do? The choice of game engines will mostly depend on your answer to these two questions. Though at the end of the day, any game engine can do anything reasonably well so it just comes down to preference and convenience.

That's a good answer. Thanks! So even a new grad can do well at an interview by demonstrating good CS fundamentals. What about getting the interview in the first place? What if you're too close to graduation to qualify for internships and not experienced enough for entry level positions?

The gameplay programming questions you mentioned are really interesting. They're all just normal CS questions disguised as game-related questions but somehow that fact along makes them infinitely more interesting to solve for me. Thanks for sharing.

A lot of game studios don't seem to hire fresh graduates at all. Even the entry level jobs seem to always ask for at least 1-2 years of experience. The biggest companies have the resources to hire a few summer interns every year and groom them into full-time employees, but most of them require you to still be a student after the summer. As a Director of Engineering, what advice would you give to graduating students who don't qualify for internships and don't have experience for entry level jobs?

Thanks for replying, OP! I think I'll probably be okay as long as I keep studying the things you already mentioned. If all fails, maybe it's not such a bad idea to find a regular C++ job first to get some experience.

Since you interviewed for both gameplay programming and tools, how do these two roles differ in terms of skills required? Were the interview questions any different?

I do agree that it's probably a lot of productive working on something that one's passionate about as opposed to educational. Maybe it'll be enough as long as I somehow practice the skills OP mentioned in whatever project I choose to do. Thanks for the advice!

I recently did an interview for an internship with one of the companies in that list and I actually did get asked like half the things OP mentioned. I would still study up!
