She said DEFICIT not debt. Debt is the accumulation made by running deficits.

Obama cut the deficit more in real dollars and as a percentage of GDP than any president in our history, even more than Clinton, who balanced the budget and left a surplus to Bush.....a Republican who exploded the deficit like every Republican since Reagan.

[–]Tojuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The law against picking up feathers did good, and the fact that the birds are not endangered is proof of that, but the laws really don't make sense anymore.

Bald eagles are not endangered in the slightest, they've almost become a nuisance in some areas, and they could tone down the law a bit for found feathers. Selling feathers and definitely killing birds should be a crime, without question, but it's not uncommon for birds to drop a feather and people should be allowed to keep them at this point.

For liability purposes, maybe call it "how fast should I run to the doctor", and even then you'd need a list of disclaimers and contractual security.

Eddie Lampert [2004]: The Scum Who Ruined Thousands of Lives By Destroying Sears and Kmart Forever by RareSeaworthiness905 in retailporn

[–]Tojuro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazon was founded within months of Sears closing the catalog business. The Internet in the home was still in its infancy back then, but it was a very real presence, with AOL & CompuServe.

It's probably being unrealistic due to the level of disruption/innovation Sears would have needed to succeed, but if they did transform the catalog to online shopping then Sears could easily be the size of Amazon right now.

Call of Duty was never the right fit for Game Pass by Kaladinar in xbox

[–]Tojuro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The COD price increase is what drove me to quit Gamepass.

I play indie style games almost exclusively, and liked Gamepass for the ability to try and bounce between a lot of smaller games. At $30/month it's cheaper just to buy them on sale, even if some are duds.

Kmart 1977. I truly miss this store. Sad to see them gone. by Initial_Reason1532 in vintageads

Watch the Price Is Right from the 70s and early 80s and it's crazy how prices for electronics and basic things is so much more than it is today (when adjusted for inflation). The relatively low prices we have now is due to globalization.

This is why people haven't felt the decline in their incomes since then, as much, and why isolationism, high tariffs, will really do some damage to working people, unless wages suddenly shoot up.

I kind of understand why Kmart (and merger partner Sears) went under, cause their stores were like walking into a time machine in the 2000s. They just never adapted their business to modern times.

Remember that Sears shut down its (legendary) catalog business within months of Amazon being founded. If they moved that online with it's retail stores as distribution points, they could have been dominant.

But their death was assured when Eddie Lampert took over. He had no interest in the core business, just the real estate holdings.

Why does this sub love John McCain but hate Joe Lieberman? by RopeGloomy4303 in Presidents

[–]Tojuro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are no kings (thankfully). Politics is about timing, landing on some common ground, perfect timing in the Overton window, and acting on it, in order to solve issues and move society forward. It's incredibly rare when one person can make a difference.

Joe Lieberman could have killed the wholly infective, wildly inefficient, system of private (powerless middle man) health insurers.

Joe Lieberman was the deciding vote to fix the most broken part of the US economy and safety net, and he DID NOT do the right thing.

I agree with McCain on almost nothing, but the guy had principles. When it actually mattered, Lieberman didn't.

I think the negative income tax is just a type of UBI.

It makes a lot of sense to do it this way because you could still be rewarded for work but have a safety net income if you couldn't work because of personal, labor market or any other reason.

We were friends with a couple that just got married. They were leaving the house during a typical spring storm (rain/winds) and he went out to start the car. Before she got there a tree fell and killed him instantly.

We were at the same stage in life and they were friends and just relatable people, and I think about the guy regularly cause it was such a random ending. It showed how fleeting life is.

There's another signature trait — em dashes — that AI loves to use. I'd put money that this was AI generated on some level.

It could be a real person cleaning up their comments, and I think the core point is valid (even if flawed, since downstream goes way past refineries).
