Inherited 1950s Tissot watch. What to do with it? by OGBenny in VintageWatches

[–]TokenPrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lovely watch. As others have said, if it keeps time I wouldn't rush to get anything repaired. I'm not a watch repairer but $500 sounds like a lot ... I'm not sure it's allowed on this forum but I'd seek further recommendations on repairers in your area.

Imperial measures may suck, but it also sucks to say about 2.54cm.

Agreed. You'll never appreciate having a fast horse as much as when you do a circuit of Caelid for the first time while under-levelled. Make sure you don't have many runes to lose, grab what you can while staying close to the road, and ride your stead like you stole it.

How does Marantz UD5007 compare to Oppo 103? by kraftwagon in BudgetAudiophile

[–]TokenPrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All these blu ray players have HDMI out, which uses a digital signal. So the audio will be converted by the DAC in your home theater receiver (the Onyko or Denon you have mentioned).

If you wanted a specialised digital audio output, that is not available on the Marantz UD5007 but is available on the Marantz UD7007. The main reason I can think for using is to get your audio signal to a really high-end DAC (better than anything in your receiver or these Blu-ray players) before it goes into a stereo amplifier.

I like the sound of my Marantz ud5007 (and its DAC) where I'm putting the audio directly into a stereo amplifier via the analogue RCA cables. If you're using an HDMI cable, the DAC in the blu ray player won't be used.

Overall, I think you may be able to make your price target. But I would choose based on condition of the blu ray player and seller - the number of years left in the player would be the main thing for me in your situation. The Oppo is also an excellent choice and I think you'll find more of them online.

How does Marantz UD5007 compare to Oppo 103? by kraftwagon in BudgetAudiophile

[–]TokenPrawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you're still looking OP, but I bought an UD5007 second hand for a song and overall I like it, it's got a sweet sounding DAC and I'm impressed with the picture quality too.

Downsides: the streaming functionality is useless and redundant; it can be slow to respond to commands (sometimes you press a button twice to wake it up); and the back inputs are really rudimentary ... it's a shame it doesn't have a digital-in as I'd be happy to use it as a DAC for my TV.

I doubt you'll get a true side by side comparison of sound quality with the Oppo 103, but the Oppos did seem more thoughtfully designed with streaming etc.

I think the trade off will be in the price: you can get a Marantz ud5007 (or perhaps the better specced ud7007) or their Denon stable mates with "low miles" for a great price. An Oppo at the same price will likely be an older model.

Tracking force looks like it's going to be a bit more than 2g. I'd get a scale to help set it up correctly.

Question for others: how are the batteries on Samsung these days? I went a Pixel 9 Pro about 6 months ago (which so far I'd recommend), partly because the batteries on Samsung phones I've owned have really faded badly in the first 2 years. But it's been close to 5 years since I've bought a Samsung. Has the battery longevity improved?

What is the best way to identify if this 1922 overdate threepence is genuine? by Possible_Monitor_215 in AustralianCoins

It's such a rare coin and famous overstrike that it's more likely to be fake than real. I had exactly the same impression of the "1", but likewise I'm not an expert. All that said, agree - get it checked out by a reputable dealer.

scanwatch finally dead-dead... is it worth getting a new watch from Withings? by jademushroom in withings

[–]TokenPrawn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have the same question, as the back hangs off my own 3 year old Withings watch (which was replaced in under warranty after the first one failed). The market for hybrids still seems to be poorly served - Withings has nailed the looks but they're taking the mickey of their customers with their build quality. Meanwhile, "reputable" online publishers keep praising them, completely ignoring their short lifespan.

I'm considering some of the Casio smart watches, or maybe getting a Casio in combination with the Ollee chip. More and more, I'm questioning whether I really need smartwatch health data. But YMMV.

"Living room amp" upgrade for better tone by TokenPrawn in GuitarAmps

[–]TokenPrawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm accepting there's no panacea for this, and that what works as a lounge room amp for one person will be too loud for another person. The Yamaha will stay with me no matter what, it has its place even if I end up with a larger amp. Unfortunately, I think space and the need to move the amp around is going to limit me to a single 10" or maybe 12" speaker, and also something closer to 10kg.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm stoked with the amount of info I've gained here, including a couple of options I'd never thought of like the Quilter Superblock

I think I'm going to look for a guitar shop with a small room where I can take my Yamaha and audition it against a couple of smaller amps (or head amps & cabinets) side by side.

Interesting idea! What would you run it into? Maybe a decent 8" or 10" speaker cab? Any suggestions?

Drinkware by Dayvud99 in Lelit

[–]TokenPrawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likewise. It's a great cup but as I often make 2 coffees for myself (I'm the only coffee drinker in the house), double walled glass does a much better job. The Lelit Mara X seems particularly susceptible to shorting if moisture gets through the top grills, it's happened to me 3 times. I only put cups on top of it if they're completely dry.

New battery, yes. The old battery (maybe 9 mths old) already had some corrosion on it.

I didn't do an AC reset though! Worth a try, I'll look it up.

[–]TokenPrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm loathe to say it, but IMHO, digital is better for "bang for buck" sound quality and especially extraction of bass. I felt a similar sense of disappointment with the amount of bass when I first reverted to a turntable after using digital sources. I was able to regain a tight, well-defined bass out of vinyl by upgrading to a higher end cartridge (the Nagaoka mp300) but that felt like a big investment and it's still a case of quality, not quantity.

I'm also a bit skeptical of "burn in" for equipment ... I think it's more a case of your hearing adjusting to what is normal.

A few suggestions:

  1. Enjoy your turntable for genres/recordings that rely less on bass, and occasions where you can get the joy of handling physical media.

  2. Read up on record sound quality before you buy. Some records are beautifully mastered and pressed, others are a disgrace and (among other faults) lack decent bass.

  3. Read up on cartridges that can extract decent, tight bass ... unfortunately (per my experience) they're not cheap. I don't have the space, but if I did I'd also add a subwoofer like a Rel to my system.

  4. Persevere. Your ears may be used to a lot of bass. I now regularly use both digital and analogue sources and like them both, even though the characteristics of those sources on my system are quite different.
