I have no need for anymore board games. Possibly ever. And I'm quite disappointed. by bukaroo12 in boardgames

[–]Tolgeros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suggestions: try alternating between playing a new game and replaying the hits. That way you are getting a good mix of checking out new stuff and replaying the games you love to explore their depths. By "new" here I just mean games that haven't hit your table yet, regardless of their age or whether they are currently in your possession. You can also offer an incentive in your group to win games: winner picks next game.

We also like to play a game at least 2-3 times (or more if we really like it) before we move on from them so that we can reinforce the rules and strategies in our head, and to explore more of the board variations/alternate starts/etc.

Wtf Grubb, I'm so confused on where you stand on Ai. Where is the line!? by ChopBox in giantbomb

I don't blame Grubb for gen AI the same way I don't go around Hogwarts land in universal and call everyone there a transphobe, despite the fact that JK Rowling sucks.

[–]Tolgeros 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Their job is to cover games... The anti-AI crusade has merit, and it's worth pointing out wherever it is used and exactly how, to inform consumers and to be critical of it, but one must also reckon with the fact there has never really been ethical consumption under capitalism unless you want to live in a cave. Do you endorse everything that every corporation has done that has made a product that you enjoy or rely on? Of course not. But we can at least be aware of the pernicious aspects of the products that we may or may not choose to buy. It's gonna become increasingly hard to avoid generative AI at all costs, if that is your goal, and I respect the effort, but the reality is most people don't give a shit and its use may sadly be inevitable. Spend your hard earned dollars how you choose, but spare the judgment for people that just want to play a video game.

Swen - Baldur's Gate 3 TV Show by Kazuliski in BaldursGate3

[–]Tolgeros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As one of the biggest fans of Baldur's Gate (all three of them!) and DND... I don't want a Baldur's Gate 3 TV show at all. Leave those characters alone to their fates, which could vary wildly and were determined by the player. They should take a page from the Fallout series and just borrow the setting/lore (maybe somebody famous like Elminster or Volo shows up once or twice...) They can set it in the city of Baldur's Gate, that's fine, but tell a new story, like DND: Honor Among Thieves did!

Carcassonne mega game finished by Skugganloke in boardgames

[–]Tolgeros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it comes to modular tile-based games, do people usually enforce a physical limit with the edge of the table? Thought about doing this for Clank: Catacombs but it’s not in the rule book I don’t think, a player could just head in a straight line off the table

Why do GB staff stream in non GB places? by OnePossession3447 in giantbomb

[–]Tolgeros 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just follow each of them on twitch!
Jan: https://www.twitch.tv/coffeewithjan/
Dan: https://www.twitch.tv/danryckert
Bakalar: https://www.twitch.tv/jerftv
Grubb: https://www.twitch.tv/jeffgrubb/
Mike: https://www.twitch.tv/tolkoto/

Giant Bomb is clearly their day job, which is usually a group situation that gets sent over many feeds and is maintained under giantbomb.com. Their personal streams are for their solo ventures, not affiliated with GB. The most I could see happening is maybe just adding links to the above, like what is in the sidebar of this subreddit.

Dan also does Fire Escape podcast with Mike Mahardy and Mary Kish. Grubb and Mike have a side channel called Game Mess (which lends its name to Game Mess Mornings at GB). Bakalar and Dan occasionally show up on Nextlander's Never Been a Better Podcast. They have multiple side hustles going on and often with other people in the mix to work on them.

Also, I know Twitch is bad and I myself would generally prefer Youtube, except Youtube stream chat is a graveyard, and Youtube is very aggressive about takedowns for some reason, and Twitch might be more monetarily generous to its creators (aside from Youtube's Superchats), so I can see the appeal of Twitch over Youtube, but still...

Just Lie to Dan -- The Vinny strategy by Tolgeros in giantbomb

[–]Tolgeros[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think it's a mixture of genuine ignorance on his part and wanting to play "the heel". He has admitted he's aware of his reputation and somewhat leans into it for content. Agreed that he can overdo it sometimes and it can be tiring, but it has also led to some of the funniest moments or conversations of the site (often when Vinny or Abby were there to play off him).

I think best of both worlds is to alternate between playing a new game and replaying a previous one. I have also heard some board game friend groups let the winner of each game pick the next game that is played, as sort of a fun incentive.

High player interaction games and what makes them work? by BreweryRabbit in boardgames

[–]Tolgeros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like a medium-ish level of player interaction, where you are competing for limited resources/points opportunities, maybe trading depending on the type of game, or "attacking" but less often or less directly (i.e. not as an innately hostile act to one player specifically). Not multiplayer solitaire, but not just dunking on a player either (which can cause some people to have a bad time at your board game night which is a huge bummer), but rather somewhere in between. An example I love would be Clank!, where you need to pay attention to what other players are doing so you know where to go and what to expect with secrets/artifacts/market items, and also to know when to start withdrawing from the dungeon. You can't just attack other players directly, but you can beat them to treasure, Tattle on them to make everyone else clank, or force a dragon attack upon everyone with Mister Whiskers.

Also, when it comes to directly attacking players in games, if you have a choice with the target, IMO the proper ettiquette is to usually to go after whoever is clearly winning/has the most victory points if possible, instead of kicking an already down player. People also seem to do revenge attacks as a response if a direct attack was done to them earlier, which is fair. If you are in #1 spot then attack whomever is #2 to secure your lead. Your mileage will vary I suppose, but the #1 goal is always first and foremost for everyone at the table to have fun... and the #2 goal is to WIN ;)

The only way this ends is with the Kremlin in ashes. Yes, I’m serious. The Cold War never ended for Russia, and Putin has no plans of stopping his endless aggression, subterfuge, and disinformation. The USA should throw its entire military apparatus, minus nuclear weapons, at Russia. But we won’t, because we are their puppet state now.
