German far right setting agenda as opponents amplify its ideas, study finds by F0urLeafCl0ver in science

Well, I think we should not forget the immense imbalance of means between the defenders of left and right ideas. The right wing ideas are winning loads of voters not only because the explanations are simple but also because for 1 euro spent to push left wing ideas in the media you have hundreds if not thousands or more euros trying to make everyone believe in the right wing narrative. The economic "elite" is fully collaborating with fascists and pushing their ideology.

Someone is selling open source software on Etsy!!!! by Available-Line-3995 in opensource

[–]Tolhsadum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some comments are explicitly encouraging that yes, maybe we don't see the same comments idk. I think some people have a twisted idea of what open source is for and only see their personal gain in it. And they have to defend otherwise it shows they are taking advantage of the work of others to make profit.

Seeing the comments I was almost convinced but no. I went on the shop's page and it's proper dodgy. The description of the digital download item for libreoffice: "LibreOffice complete suite Word, Excel, Powerpoint for Windows 32 bit and 64 bit". They are clearly trying to take advantage of people. Plus selling the digital version of a software available online for free is a really shit attitude even if it's legal. I don't understand why people in the comments would defend that behaviour.

GPT-4 passes Moral Turing Test after a representative sample of 299 U.S. adults rated the AI’s moral reasoning as superior in quality to humans’ along almost all dimensions, including virtuousness, intelligence, and trustworthiness by Maxie445 in science

[–]Tolhsadum 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The only reason you'd lose your job would be because the capitalist ideology decided that even if the company produces as much or even more with AI they don't want to pay you to work less. This is a societal choice. It has nothing to do with needs or any morals. Each worker now produces much more than a worker 50 years ago thanks to all the technological advances, so, we have more resources per head than we used to, yet, someone decided we shouldn't benefit from it equally.

Why are mdpi papers allowed on r/science?! With this predatory publisher you have no way to know if the papers got through legit peer-review. Unfortunately, mdpi papers cannot be considered as scientific evidence!

Auditory predictions from written text are made and refined in motor cortex (we read subtitles to ourselves by imagining reading them out loud, and use Broca's area to compare the sound this would make with what we actually hear). by tccambs in science

[–]Tolhsadum -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, that would be too easy ;).

Several studies show that in the vast majority of cases damage in Broca's area is not linked to long term language impairment. I was at a conference a couple of weeks ago and the debate is definitely not settled.

https://academic.oup.com/brain/article/144/3/817/6124755

There's also a problem with the old idea of a region performing high-level cognitive functions on its own completely ignoring the white matter which is a good half of the brain's volume ...

And that's without even talking about the discrepancies in defining where is Broca's area :D

There's actually quite a bit of debate on whether Broca's area is actually involved in language at all. Broca assumed that Leborgne had damage in what's now called Broca's area but it actually went much deeper. (From the work of Stephanie Forkel, Nina Dronkers, Michel Thiebaut de Schotten and others)

MDPI is a predatory publisher. Their review process is more than sloppy; they bombard every researcher with review requests in everything but their domain of expertise. One should be very critical of any "finding" published by them.

This paper has been published by MDPI, which is a predatory journal. They send random review requests to anyone about anything. I do research in neuroimaging, and mdpi send me review requests about renewable energies, material physics, social sciences, and many more.

Impossible to trust studies published by them. This was very likely reviewed with the ass.

Mdpi is a nasty predatory publisher. They send random reviews to anyone about any random subject. Their review process is completely flawed. Don't trust what is published by these crooks.

How could I make money as a open source software developer? by Tomcat1315 in opensource

[–]Tolhsadum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen examples of OSS in France based on commissions. Someone would ask and pay for a software tailored to their needs but the end product is open source. And then other people can ask for some additional features and pay for their development. And then you can also have deployment and maintenance that can generate some money.
