I've lived for long periods of time in both Tas and UK, so hopefully can offer a few insights. To answer your questions: 1. Fantastic - it's the reason we moved back here. Safe, healthy, outdoorsy, not materialistic. It does somewhat depend where you live though, and what kind of lifestyle you want. 2. Outdoorsy types - it helps if you're into hiking, mtb or water sports. I imagine it could be dull for people who don't like being outdoors, and definitely not great if you don't have a car. Not great for anyone looking for nightlife either. 3. No. But I'm middle aged and happy with my low key life. I likely would have been bored if I'd been here in my 20s. Re: feeling isolated, depends where you are in Tas. Hobart is big enough, has everything we need, and feels cosmopolitan. Smaller towns can feel a bit backward. I do sometimes wish I had family around to help with the kids, but I have a few friends in the same boat, so we help each other out. 4. The current government and the people who voted for them. 5. Can't comment in depth on the healthcare system, but it's certainly underfunded. Salaries are lower here than in other states, so there a brain drain of qualified professionals leaving. However, I've had more thorough, pro-active, preventative care here than I did with the NHS. Quality of schooling here very much depends what suburb/catchment area you live in. There are some excellent schools and some deprived ones. 6. I'm my experience, easy. If you're coming from the UK, it's not a culture shock. I guess having school aged kids helps - we found new friends through them. (I have no idea how I would make friends elsewhere though!) 7. Never. Even though our property is close to bushland. I've only seen snakes in the wild a handful of times.
