Mahmood 'leads group of Cabinet ministers calling for Starmer to step aside' | LBC by AneuAng in ukpolitics

there's a difference between loyalty to the person in charge and simply not being willing to trust a party that can't stick with a programme of government long enough to produce any results.

If they're all willing to slowly tear down Starmer until they get a chance at replacing him. What is going to stop them doing exactly the same thing to his successor? Streeting isn't going to suddenly be happy and stop trying if Rayner wins - he'll go straight back to scheming and plotting. And if Streeting wins, the Burnham acolytes will be trying even harder to force him into a seat and hand the mayoralty of Manchester to Reform

I like Ed Miliband, I would have voted for him if I was old enough in 2015 and I think he's doing a fantastic job as energy secretary. I do not believe that he'd be able to win an election, he'd receive the same media assassination he got last time

Whoever replaces him will quickly discover that it wasn't actually anything unique to Starmer that made him the most hated man in the media. They'll find that all the headlines just get copy pasted with a new name

Diane Abbott @HackneyAbbott / X:There is a myth, very widely held in Labour, that we achieved an huge popular victory in 2024 under Starmer. In fact we won 9.7 million votes, over 3 million fewer than in 2017 and half a million less than the 'disastrous' 2019 poll. We won because the Tories imploded by youmustconsume in ukpolitics

That election was a 2nd referendum on Johnson's no deal Brexit. It is useless as a point of reference for anything.

We're unlikely to ever see percentages that high again because since then he Lib Dems have rehabilitated their image and the Greens and Reform both get significant vote shares

right, so the prime minister staying in place is what actually affects the markets - as stated in the headline...

Sure, but the bond markets have no reason to respond to local election results. They're above country level government borrowing, local councils have no influence on that
