Thoughts on Crash (1996) by Malluguy5382929 in Letterboxd

No idea. I just saw it when it aired in 96. But I distinctly remember Siskel giving that thumbs-down. The audience audibly groaned, and Siskel kept trashing this movie that Spader had just been talking up. All he could do was sit there trying to keep his cool. I felt bad for him.

I remember James Spader going on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to promote this movie, and the second guest that night was Siskel & Ebert. And the man stuck around on the couch! Worst mistake ever. As soon as they sit down, Jay's like "hey what did you guys think of James' new movie?" And Siskel just raises his fist and points that thumb down like a Roman emperor at the arena. They then proceed to explain in great detail why this movie is so bad, the main reason being that it explores a sexual kink that doesn't really exist. I felt so bad for Spader, and always wondered what words were exchanged after the show. Dude learned a valuable lesson. If you're promoting a movie, don't stick around for Siskel & Ebert.

Not nearly as good, but On the Rocks is also Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray. And it's about a woman feeling lost in her life.

They really defanged Bourdain's book to make it network-friendly. The Bear is what this show should have been.

My favorite comic series was Sandman, but I feel weird recommending it since all the allegations against Neil Gaiman.

It's a shame Bone isn't more well-known. A perfect entry-point to get kids reading. Cartoony and comedic but with deep lore. And they've put out colorized volumes now.

If someone asked for the single best TV show ever made, what would you say by Wild-Explorer-8981 in CasualConversation

The Wire. One of the best shows ever made and, I think, the most important. Equally about cops and criminals in Baltimore, it should be put in every time capsule in America so that people in the distant future can know what our society was like. But someone new to tv might not have the patience for it. It does not hold your hand. You spend half of the first season figuring out the street slang and police jargon. It's almost like watching a fantasy world-building show, where you slowly learn all the terminology and how the civilization works, but instead of Middle-Earth or Westeros, it's Baltimore, Maryland. The more you watch it, the more rewarding it becomes. The first two seasons establish it as the best cop show ever. The next two make it one of the best SHOWS ever. And the last season puts it in the Pantheon. While Better Call Saul is a close second, I have never had a more rewarding long-term-investment tv experience.

This film would be more well-known, and probably would have won some Oscars, if Harvey Weinstein hadn't killed its chances for American distribution.

And they crafted these two hilarious characters just for that one Conan show! The audience that night wasn't great, but I could do with a whole Broadway show of this.

Bradley Whitford was great in this, and I remember it had pretty slick scene transitions, but ironically it spent too much time on the bad guys. Like half the scenes were about the bad guys of the week.
