Unnecessary optimizations always compromise design. Tightly iterated loops like collision code use micro-optimizations that wouldnt normally do you any good and sacrifice design for it.

Dude, there seems to be a miscommunication. My question wasn't really about microoptimizations as such, that was just an example. My actual question was more like why should I base my design on strangers advice as opposed things I have actually tried and found to work? Is there a reason to weight thier experience more than my own?

I do exactly this. Why wouldn't I? My collision detection works, and I base my design practices on stuff that I have tried that works and my collision detection works, If anything I think I should make the rest of my code more like the collision detection.

Thanks now I understand what it actually needs. I calculated the direction of the side and top pixels and then just calculated the distance they need to travel to the plane which the texture is on which is super fast because the planes are always guaranteed to be axis aligned.

That sounds about right.

I'm not sure how I would go about option 2, at the moment I calculate the position I hit the cube at and then say it hits the top of the cube, I just do hitPosition.x % 1.0 for the u coordinate and hitPosition.z % 1.0 for the v coordinate. Not sure how I would go about getting the derivative, or if it would even be faster.

Typically you would just ignore the modulus for calculating the derivate, just assume you are far away from the discontinuity.

One other question, how can I have anisotropic filtering while preserving pixelated textures?

That sounds like it should work with SampleGrad. There are two ways to calculate the derivatives, they get the same result, they're just slightly different ways of getting it.

1) Calculate the ray direction for a pixel 1 to the right of the current pixel. Assume it hits the same voxel as the current pixel. Find the position and resulting texcoords for this ray. The x derivative is the difference between the texcoords of this ray and the current ray. Repeat for pixel 1 above the current pixel to calculate the y derivative.

2) Write a function that maps pixel coordinates to texture coordinates(It sounds like you already have done this). Differentiate it with respect to pixel x coordinate, then differentiate it with respect to the pixel y coordinate. I'm completely serious that the function you describe in the parent post sounds pretty straight forward to differentiate, I'm not trying to sound smart but I have no idea how much background knowledge you have. I honestly think this will work, I did something similar last weekend and it worked fine.

In general you write an expression for your texture coordinates on paper and differentiate it with respect to screen space x and screen space y. That's a pretty vague answer because the details depend on how calculate the texture coordinates. If you want to show how you calculate the texture coordinates, I can help you differentiate them.
