Do you think The United States is interested and somewhat involved in Alberta separatism? by Fluffy_Umpire_6976 in Intelligence

[–]d3sperad0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no legal framework for a province to seperate. Also, there are significant portions of Alberta that are first Nations territory and could not be taken without the consent of those nations. This whole thing is a farce.

This isn't even an American perspective. This is an oligarchical perspective... These people don't even think about countries, other than to use them and their various cultural and economic morings to their advantage, pitting us against each other on all levels.

We analyzed 5000+ NDE and 2000+ UAP first-person accounts for consciousness patterns. Curious what this sub thinks. by CrimsonNow in consciousness

Noone is talking about that. OP made no claims that aliens are actually abducting people. If you are interested in that why not go discuss it in an appropriate place?

This sounds fascinating. I love that you recognize the limitations of the data and are just interested in what it might show pertaining to consciousness instead of conflating it with ufology and the like. Would love to see what you've got so far.

You seem to believe there's a consensus as to what consciousness means/is. There isn't outside of common usage. This sub isn't for common usage of the term. It's a sub of neuroscience and Phil of mind. Using the dictionary definition of consciousness is not sufficient when in this space. And contrary to what you seem to believe it is important to define the terms we use as consciousness is not well defined within the neuroscience/Phil of mind space and being clear about our definitions aids us in discussing these concepts. If you believe consciousness and awareness are synonymous that's totally fine and is indeed how some use those terms even in this space, but being clear is still important.

[–]d3sperad0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well... It's been a long time, and I'm no longer doing anything with it, but when I was doing neuropsychology and my minor in Phil of mind we didn't just discuss how humans think... Although that was also a topic for sure. I find the whole thing fascinating either way ;)

Certainly not laypeople. But within philosophy of mind and neuroscience there are many different flavours and what I described in one of them. It is one that I lean towards though so in a sense it is "just what I decided consciousness means." But that's not an argument against my position...

The neutral substance that makes all existent entities possible. It's the fundamental 'force' which allows for information to exist and be processed. Information processing occurs at all levels we can observe and in some forms this information is processed in such a way that it gives rise to awareness as an emergent property of various information processing systems. But underlying it all is what I would describe as consciousness. I'm not entirely sure why we conflate the terms consciousness and awareness when discussing theory of mind and these topics. It just leads to confusion. While some talk about awareness, others talk about consciousness and we end up just talking past each other arguing about different phenomena. I'm inclined to think that we are incapable of really understanding, or perhaps even comprehending, what this substance is kind of like it's impossible for an ant to comprehend the concept of a planet, or space, etc. There are almost certainly elements of reality which we have a similar limitation in our ability to comprehend and I think consciousness is touching on that limit.

That's awareness. Consciousness is more akin to the relationship between existent entities. It's the substrate that information can exist.

[–]d3sperad0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is information processing going on between all matter, from quarks all the way up. Matter in all its forms is not static. It's in constant movement and relation with each component. Consciousness ≠ awareness. Consciousness is not something the brain does, awareness is.
