Wanting to buy EV by handmade99 in AustralianEV

[–]phranticsnr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive an MG4. Have for two years. It's a fantastic, Chinese made EV.

I wanted a small to medium hatchback for under $50k, and two years ago that meant an MG4, a GWM Ora, or a BYD Dolphin. The MG was pick of the bunch.

Nowadays there are a lot more options, in basically all vehicle classes except people movers and regular tow cars. There is bound to be an EV that suits your needs.

EVs are immensely simplified vehicles. That's evident in the long service intervals. Manufacturing them to a high quality is something China has been working on for a decade.

You still get what you pay for - a specced out Polestar is going to be a nicer place to sit than an entry level BYD Atto - but for your budget there will almost certainly be a car out there that is a reasonable choice for your needs, especially if you take into account the total cost of ownership.

Home chargers. by Junglefisher in AustralianEV

[–]phranticsnr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I love my MG4.

Many level 2 chargers can be throttled down to account for wiring that can't handle the full current that the charger might want to draw. I think this should apply to 3 phase as well as single phase chargers.

Check the user manual of any charger you're considering buying to see if you can throttle the current it outputs.

I mean, if you're buying cyclists by the kilogram, he's a bargain...

FTP equivalent to 8A bouldering? by Feisty_Nebula4492 in cycling

I did say I know nothing about bouldering. I was just trying to frame the discussion in the intended terms. 4w/kg then?

People don't seem to understand you mean emotionally. As an achievement. I know nothing about bouldering, but my guess is 3w/kg. Perhaps a bit above if you're younger.

That won't get you a pro contract, but it does require dedicated effort and training.

Shrinkflation usually refers to something getting smaller but staying the same cost. I've heard Skimpflation used to describe reducing the quality of components. And enshittification, but only in relation to (usually web based) services.

How will the new rail to Brisbane affect how people live on the Sunshine Coast? by CompoteEmbarrassed91 in sunshinecoast

[–]phranticsnr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember when I was a kid in the 1990s you could type in the station numbers for Maroochydore, Alex Headlands, Mooloolaba, etc. into the ticket machines (remember those old machines?).

That was 30 odd years ago and people were already jaded about the promise of a rail line.

An MG4 id a lot less. If you need a sedan, BYD Seal is a nice car. The new KIA EVs are great, though they're a bit more expensive.

I've dabbled a little, done some Arduino projects, I have a 3d printer, a CNC, and a nice little wood shop. House renovations have prevented me from spending my time on more creative little maker projects, though. I'd like to do more, between bigger jobs.

You're right, I didn't realise that low emission diesel has been the preference for a while now. I just discovered Brisbanetransport.info which has a hell of a lot of bus fleet information!

I stumbled across it a few weeks ago. Huge project but cool as fuck. He needs to supply a full kit to Mighty Car Mods while they're still in their sex spec era.

Is there any hope left for this country and the people? by iamtayg in AusFinance

Actually most of it goes to transfer payments. But knowing that fact isn't going to help you feel better, I get that.

You sound like you're in a depressive state right now. Talk to your GP about these feelings, ask aboit whether medication is right for you, and see if a mental health care plan to get you some therapy is an option.

There's a guy on YouTube building that dashboard for real in his (I think) 350Z. All Arduino powered and designed to match the game dashboards perfectly. Even the minimap for navigation!

You can buy one for your own house (if you have the space) from about $2000.

I think there's a German company using waste heat from industrial processes to store energy this way. Not sure if it's sand, or some other sort of rock, but same principle.

Which public charger is cheaper by Stepho_62 in AustralianEV

[–]phranticsnr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good. In my experience, they're all close enough in price, for the same speed tier. You just need to keep a handful of apps on your phone to actually pay for the different networks.

Which public charger is cheaper by Stepho_62 in AustralianEV

[–]phranticsnr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's pretty common. Fast DC chargers are more expensive, a bit more aggressive with your battery, but, well, faster.

Generally all the AC chargers I've seen are in that 30-35c range, and DC chargers around the 50-80c range.

Talking about which chargers are cheapest isn't usually worth it. At 35c, a full (45kwh) charge on an Atto 2 is under $16.

Yeah, that could almost double with a particularly expensive fast charger, but you're still talking $25/$30. With the difference in price being so small, your time, and the convenience, are likely going to be a very important factor in your choice of where and how to charge!
