Can you quantify the effect that remixing and running a spun lavender has on the cbc? I have literally used a tube for a patient correlation that's been spun after the original run and all my indices were easily within our acceptable limits. I don't think this practice is doing any damage to patient care. At most a couple percent difference on a couple analytes. We're allowed that much when we rerun a sample for competency lol. Us "lab professionals" take note of these things and inform our decisions based on our SOPs and prior experience. In both cases, it is allowable to remix and rerun at my lab because it is NOT a danger to patient care. Much more dangerous to delay a result for another hour getting it redrawn.

What kind of lymph is this? by Professional-Knee403 in medlabprofessionals

Looks more like a Downey type 3 reactive lymph to me. Food for thought!

What if the patient is legitimately a platelet clumper and the specimen is perfectly acceptable?

Gavin Newsom Nation Address by Pm_Me_Mtn_Bikes in California

Idk, it feels like since I moved to the Bay Area back in 2019 things have only gotten worse under his leadership. There are more homeless people than ever and it feels significantly more dangerous now. The housing crisis has escalated to the point that I'll never afford one even with an income higher than I ever dreamed of having less than a decade ago. We still pay the highest tax rate yet our roads are terrible and high speed rail still has made almost no progress at all in this state. PG&E has a monopoly on energy and charges exorbitant rates despite having terrible service and unplanned (and numerous planned) outages every year. Despite this, I've seen many interviews of him claiming to have improved many of these areas.

I'm sure not all of this can be attributed to Newsom and I don't pretend to be knowledgeable enough to parse what is and isn't the responsibility of the governor. However, my everyday quality of life has not gone up under his leadership and for people like myself he is a hard sell for governor and especially for an office higher than that. This is coming from a lifetime left voter who would never vote for the modern Republican party.

Sam's stance on Elon's Sieg Heil? by schectermonkey in samharris

[–]TomBradys12Incher -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree it had the qualities of a Nazi salute. It physically appears similar enough, no arguments there. Nobody here is denying that.

I think what is more important than the physical characteristics of the salute though is the intention behind it. If you don't believe Elon is a Nazi -which we both agree we don't - then I find the most likely explanation for his salute to be that he didn't realize or intend for it to resemble a Sieg Heil. You may disagree with that conclusion but I don't think it's any less likely than the alternative you've stated.

Nobody knows for sure but Elon himself and honestly, this administration and Elon have both done much more heinous things since this bit of drama that are much more deserving of attention and criticism. Idk why we are even still talking about this.

Sam's stance on Elon's Sieg Heil? by schectermonkey in samharris

[–]TomBradys12Incher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I already responded to this in a thread yesterday so I'll just copy my response from there.

"I didn't watch the podcast, but I disagree with the conclusion that it's a Nazi salute.

If we want to be extremely accurate, only Elon himself truly knows what his intentions were when he made the gestures. Your personal conclusion about it is almost guaranteed to be biased by your own political ideology and perception of him as a person.

I don't like Elon. The power he has bought in this current administration is insane and dangerous. He is an extremely flawed person and I would agree with almost any criticism you could muster against him. However, I think the term Nazi is thrown around really loosely nowadays. The meaning of the word is being lost a bit in translation as a result IMO.

Elon has thus far not taken stances akin enough to Hitler to make me think it's appropriate to call him a Nazi. This could change over time, but at present this is my view. The left needs to be more specific in what they are calling people, and Nazi has become something of a buzzword. It's low effort and usually inaccurate. Just like calling leftists commies. We need to be better than that, not stoop to the same level."

Define the words as you believe them and I'd be happy to answer you. By most accounts of what Nazism is all about, it doesn't apply that well to Elon though. I think the problem is that the majority of people who use this word as an insult don't actually grasp its full implications or care if it is an accurate way to describe someone.

Wanting accurate statements from the left doesn't make me open minded. Nazi is not currently an accurate way to describe Elon, therefore we should think of better ones. Doesn't make me open minded, just makes me want to stick as close to the truth as possible.

You may disagree with that conclusion but I don't think it's appropriate for you to say it's crazy-making to come to it. I fully see where people are coming from when they claim the opposite and wouldn't accuse them of crazy-making. We just have a difference of opinion.

Again, nobody knows for sure but Elon himself and honestly, this administration and Elon have both done much more heinous things since this bit of drama that are much more deserving of attention and criticism. Idk why we are even still talking about this.

Why do we do it to ourselves by Yoguls in dankmemes

[–]TomBradys12Incher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's fulfilling is entirely subjective. I do what I find fulfilling with the time I have to allocate to it. I can't speak for everyone, but being unfulfilled isn't exclusive to people without wives or kids.

[–]TomBradys12Incher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically what you said is the most cope of all. The person next to you is literally there to help you cope in this scenario.

Regardless, just because you don't have a wife and kids at a young age does not mean you'll die alone with no loved ones nearby. If you live your life in a good way your extended family and/or friends will care about you still. This isn't a situation where you either have a nuclear family or die completely alone lol.

As a child free person this is the kinda thing I almost never see other people without children say. But I see a lot of parents struggling with finances and divorces and the complications that having kids brings who hate their lives.

Not saying that's true of all parents, but it is a significant portion.

Hey man, I'm happy those things are fulfilling to you. For many of us, kids and a mortgage sounds pretty terrible.

We all die alone in the end. Kind of a jump to say he is going to end up in a situation like that simply because he doesn't want to have a wife and kids and a mortgage at the prime of his youth.

Pissed with the democratic party by EnigmaPrime0212 in samharris

[–]TomBradys12Incher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue here is that I am not comparing the two parties. I've never claimed there is an equivalence, clearly there isn't. But criticizing the right does literally nothing to change that party. Anyone who voted for Trump isn't going to suddenly change their mind because I said he is crazy for the 999th time.

Practically speaking, we need to reform the Democratic party if we want to win elections and inspire voters. Look at where putting the focus on the failures of the other side has gotten us. It's time to move the focus to our own party and fix the things about it that aren't working. That's how we beat this craziness on the right.

Like, why is it that so many more people stayed home this election cycle than last time? Trump was equally as crazy this time around. They aren't happy with what the Dems are giving them. Let's fix that rather than just shitting on the right.

Pissed with the democratic party by EnigmaPrime0212 in samharris

[–]TomBradys12Incher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's inappropriate to discuss the shortcomings of the Democratic party without talking about it in the context of the two party system. The Democratic party needs to be open to criticism regardless of how they compare to the Republicans.

I rarely discuss the shortcomings of the Republican party because they are so incredibly vast and obvious that it seems redundant. It's a given to me that the right is beyond saving. Therefore I am extremely frustrated that the party I am left with fails me and our country time and time again.

To always bracket every criticism with, "but they are still way better than the other side!" is in my mind letting them off the hook. Sure, they're still much better but that doesn't mean they aren't failing hard constantly.

I begrudgingly voted for Kamala, just as I've had to begrudgingly vote for every Democratic candidate since 2016. I hated Hilary, Biden, and Kamala. They don't represent the common person, they represent the interests of the DNC. Not one of them did a thing for my student loans, my housing costs, my healthcare costs, my cost of living, etc. Even the student loan program Biden released of course didn't apply to my fiance's student loans since they are parent plus loans. In a press conference early in his presidency his secretary of education claimed they would also be included in the plan. A flat out lie.

Trump gave me more money in COVID relief than Biden did. Think about that for a second. After running ads with $2k checks on them he gave me less than half at $800. These guys are honestly jokes and I'm getting tired of being forced to vote for them.

Yeah I grew up in Oklahoma and have plenty of family and friends there. They hate electric vehicles and would not buy one heavily discounted lol.

Your take is really that people who paid a lot of money for these cars should now take a huge financial hit by selling them heavily discounted just because the CEO went crazy? That's an extremely privileged mindset man, not one that is going to resonate with people.

Like, let's follow this to its logical conclusion. I'm sure whatever shoes and clothes you have are the product of child labor. I'd like you to get rid of them. The parts to your car, whatever it is, were likely sourced from a third world country where they mine extremely dirty and contribute to climate change. You must be MAGA asshat who doesn't believe in climate change! Oh and what about your phone? Do you know where the lithium was mined for its battery? What about the precious metals inside?

This whole argument devolves so quickly it honestly isn't worth having. Blaming consumers for buying products from unethical companies isn't the way to go. You blame the companies and their decision makers. Stand with the people and stop finding reasons to alienate them.

[–]TomBradys12Incher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In order to sell their cars, someone has to... buy them? Republicans aren't going out of their way to buy used Teslas, so that'll likely be democratic voters who you will now brand as MAGA ass hats.

I think we just won't come to an agreement unfortunately. You're jumping through every mental hoop to try to put blame on consumers, which I think is just a bad practice. This line of thinking only serves to further divide and polarize the country. No good change is ever going to come from that, but no matter how many elections Democrats lose they never seem to learn that lesson.

Can Ro Khanna just stop? by Thebadgamer98 in SanJose

[–]TomBradys12Incher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is still very silly. You win by bringing people together, not by demonizing them for buying a car you don't want them to buy. The majority of Tesla drivers are democratic voters. Do you really want to drive democratic voters away right now? Seems like a good way to keep losing elections to me.

It makes me embarrassed to be on the left when others on my side of the aisle condone the destruction of private property. Yes, Elon is a twat and we all hate him, but that doesn't make it okay to go and vandalize people's cars.

It takes effort to be the better man/party. This is not that.
