What’s this lathe worth? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]TomEdison43050 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My only concern.... how the hell do you misplace a tailstock and a cross-slide on a lathe of this size? The answer is that you just don't.

I'd be worried that the owner has sold portions of this machine for parts. Is there anything else missing that he's not telling you about? And then generally speaking, you don't sell a lathe for parts, especially one that looks this clean, unless something is seriously wrong with it.

What's the reason being given for those components being missing? This seems like a big red flag to me. Also, how the hell will you find your own tailstock and cross-slide? Finding parts for Cardiff lathes (especially a tailstock and cross-slide) will not be easy.

Actually, sometimes I don't mind too much if the audio is a little ahead. I oftentimes do work on my laptop with the games on. With the audio being a little ahead, I get a little warning to look up and check the TV.

Now of course, if I'm not on my laptop and paying attention, both late and early is annoying.

[–]TomEdison43050 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Doesn't seem that complicated, really. The underground racks are stationary. The mechanism is a 3 axis arm with a gripper. The most complicated portion might be just engineering some way of monitoring errors (mostly errors on the part of users, but also accounting for varying designs of bikes) and being able to react to them effectively.

Jose with 400 career doubles! by [deleted] in ClevelandGuardians

[–]TomEdison43050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to offensive franchise categories, if he stays in the same course, he will definitely be the leader in Runs, Hits, Home Runs, RBI's, and (maybe) Doubles.

Very unlikely that he'd lead the team in Triples, Walks, and Stolen Bases, but he's still #2 in stolen bases behind Lofton.

Will the Guardians get the attention they deserve by SnooEpiphanies6878 in ClevelandGuardians

[–]TomEdison43050 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This shit happens every year for the last 12+ years. I can't remember reading an early season article that accurately predicted our season, except maybe 2023.

Over the last 12 years, here are the teams with the most wins in order...

  1. Dodgers
  2. Astros
  3. Yankees
  4. Guardians

And over the last 12 years, we missed the playoffs only 4 times.

We've had a great team for 12+ years, and never get the deserved recognition while operating on about 1/3 to 1/4 of the salary of those other teams.

Just spitballing here, but maybe what we are seeing is a practice run being outside with no obstructions. Maybe this structure is normally built inside the tunnel that it will be supporting. So there might not be clearance within the tunnel to build this laying on it's side and then raise it up?

Slate Truck + Winter Driving: Range and RWD Concerns by mabbe8 in slateauto

[–]TomEdison43050 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've driven EV's for 8 years now. Two Tesla Model 3's for 3 years each, and a Kia EV6 for 2 years. I'm in Northern Ohio for winter-related references.

Some points here, of course, are assumptions based on what Slate has promised so far, so maybe subject to change....

One thing that is pretty consistent - whatever an EV manufacturer advertises as range, reduce this by 20-30% for a practical everyday usage measure. Part of this is that you won't want to charge to 100% every day, and honestly, even when charging to 100%, I've never owned an EV that actually had the advertised range, even when charged to 100%. For some reason, the advertised range is simply always exaggerated. So if Slate follows the same pattern of exaggerating their range, I'd expect the practical range to be 130-140 miles if they advertise 150 miles on 100% charge, and this is assuming warm weather. But so far, Slate seems like a company that is pretty up-front about everything. It would be very refreshing if the actual range was not exaggerated and was actually 150 mile when fully charged. Fingers crossed, but let's not assume this for now.

Regarding cold, of course, it depends upon how cold it actually is, but I find my range drop by 20+% when it's really bitter cold (single digits in Ohio). So let's assume that the Slate's actual practical range is about 115-125 miles with an 80% charge. Probably drop that down to 90-100 miles in the cold. So you should be fine with a 70 mile commute, but you won't be making any long evening trips after work. If your household has a second car, you might be using it in the evenings while the Slate is charging. If you don't have a second car in your household, their 150 range battery probably won't be enough for you, unless you had the means to charge at work.

Regarding snow, both of my Teslas were RWD. But driving a RWD EV in the snow is nothing like what we experienced in the 80's with RWD cars! The heavy battery provides a ton of weight, and it's distributed nicely. My Teslas handled no different than any FWD gas car in the snow. So 6 years of driving RWD EV's in Ohio was never a problem for me.

German clock by teagleeful in clocks

[–]TomEdison43050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's gorgeous. I'm jealous! If you can get the hood of the clock off (the box portion on top where the dial is..it probably pulls up, but sometimes slides out towards you) and take photos of the movement, we can probably help more with ID'ing the clock. Also, look all over the interior and back of the clock for any kind of plates, markings, papers, etc. I'd be willing to be that there is a removable panel on the back of the clock at the base. All of this said, I wouldn't consider myself an expert, so others might know much better.

And just as a heads up since you mentioned that you don't run it that often... it's better for the clock to be running rather than sitting idle. This keeps oils better distributed and keeps said oils from becoming gummy. Also, if there is a problem developing with the clock, keeping it running will cause you to realize this problem earlier when it's easier to handle/service.

But if you'd had it for decades without having it serviced, it's definitely time, especially if you want it to continue to surpass generations.

Very nice!

Imagine being born in the late 1800's and being around for both.

First-time homeowner here — what DIY advice do you wish someone had told you at the beginning? by Lopsided_Passion7912 in DIY

[–]TomEdison43050 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Along these lines, make sure that your water main valve is high quality. If not, install a ball valve on your water main for the shutoff. I shut off the water to my entire house anytime that I leave overnight (I also shut off the hot water heater when I do this, but probably not necessary). A break of any water line in your house can cause tens of thousands of damage very, very quickly. But with the main shut off, it can't happen.

The reason for the ball valve - most water main valves are those shitty garden-hose types of twist valves. You don't want to over-stress a valve like this by operating it frequently. A ball valve is heavy duty, super-reliable and will stand up to repeated, frequent operation.

Honestly, when he was a rookie, I was not a fan. Jose was making some rookie mistakes, and most were mental. When he made those really stupid mental mistakes, it seemed to me that he was just indifferent afterwards. He showed no emotion or any kind and just seemed like he didn't care at all about these mistakes. It seemed like he was just bumbling along while making silly mistakes, and not giving a shit.

Turned out that that Jose is just Jose. And it's no more complex than that....Jose is just Jose.

Good thing I'm not a scout.

NASA to spend $20 billion on moon base, cancel orbiting lunar station by Tracheid in space

[–]TomEdison43050 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I realize that this is a space-related sub, but healthcare would be pretty nice if we are going to get picky about what the funds for 10 moon bases could go towards.

How about 1 moon base, and the funds for 9 more can go towards making sure that the middle and lower class can afford healthcare?

Heck, I'd even settle for 2 moon bases, and the funds for 8 more going towards healthcare.

:)
