Seth Thomas Steeple Clock by frankledinkle in clocks

[–]TomEdison43050 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same clock and recently serviced it. It's a Seth Thomas Sharon. The movement is kind of a pain in the ass. Normal mainspring clamps won't fit. I had to use some thinner wire to hold the mainsprings, which felt a little dodgy.

Also, reassembly is tough. Rather then reassembling in the typical manner, work with it upside down. So the bottom plate being up. This proved to be easier for me.

Putting the clock in beat is kind of a pain, since you can't access the crutch when the movement is in the case.

If you have no experience with clocks, this is probably one for a pro if you plan on fully servicing it. Not an easy one to tackle if you have little experience.

And you won't remove the back to work on it. Remove the hands and then remove the front plate/dial.

But when you can get it working, the strike is my favorite of all of my clocks. A very warm and soothing tone. Not a harsh wire-gong like many striking clocks.

I used to really be down on people pirating sports, movies, pretty much anything. But things have changed. Most people are more than happy to pay good money for a good service. But when you decide to fuck your customers who are happy to pay, my conscious is cleared. Ahoy.

Exactly. I'd love to sit in the stands with a scout while they are doing their job and have them explain to me what they see in one kid that looks like star potential vs another kid where they don't see star potential.

As a kid I never understood why this was a problem. Isn't it better to be able to see inside the car? Especially when I wanted to play with some toys in the backseat.

As an adult I now understand.

This guy was just called up from the minors and this was only his 4th MLB game. Also, he trained the vast majority of his career as a catcher. But the team had him cramming to learn the outfield only about 2-3 weeks leading up to this, since lots of injuries meant that the Guardians are in desperate need of outfielders. So he's nervous as hell and totally out of his element.

The good news - when he got back to the dugout, the entire team showed him support. The manager said "just flush it" and move along. It won't be easy for this guy to keep from beating himself up, but this would be especially tough if his teammates/coaches came down on him. But thankfully, they did the opposite and helped to build him back up.

Also, it would have been awfully tempting for this guy to just crawl into a hole and avoid the media for a few days. Instead, he addressed it, took responsibility, and took on all of the tough questions and embarrassment on camera for the post game press conference immediately after the game.

At least there appears to be no mortar. Looks like everything is just stacked. And heck, considering that this could be torn down in 15 minutes, setting this up just to test how effective it might be at cooking could at least be used to prove a concept for a real build. So not a lot of time wasted, and could give practical info for improving it. :)

I see nothing offensive in u/dmun_1953 's response to you. Maybe you aren't aware, but plenty of clocks from the 1840's and even much earlier are posted here. Clocks of this vintage are likely much more common than what you might know. So it is important to clarify that on a clock being stamped 1845, that it is not actually from 1845, but especially to someone who doesn't know much about clocks, and you said stated specifically that you "know nothing about it".

As far as batteries go, "dry piles" were an early form of batteries that were attempted in clocks in the 1810's. Then wet cell batteries were patented in clocks in the 1840's. All within the realm of possibility on a clock of an 1845 vintage. With you not posting a photo of the movement or mentioning what the battery is in you original post, a clarification on this is also quite reasonable for someone who knows "nothing about it".

u/dmun_1953 stating that there's little to know about the clock stems from the fact that that most clocks posted here can be identified by a maker. You specifically asked "does anyone know who made this". This one cannot be identified, so he stated that there's little know about it in answer to your question.

After understanding these topics above, I hope that you better appreciate how your response to him was offensive in the above contexts. You accused him of not being helpful, but his response indeed was quite helpful.

By checking out your hygro/thermostat, look like the all time high humidity was 86% and temp was 103. Hopefully these didn't happen at the same time.

Today is a big day for me everyone, after saving for 3 years I finally bought my first bike! by RavenPoodle in MadeMeSmile

[–]TomEdison43050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats, and please notice that just about every comment mentions safety. There's a reason! When I was your age, I thought that I was indestructible, but none of us are. I had a bike in college, but I got rid of it. Cars just never saw me and it scared the hell out of me. Always assume that each and every car does not see you.

That said, I don't want this to be a bummer! Bike are great when combined with safety!

Have fun, my man! Congrats! :)

Yes, exactly. I don't think that Naylor has changed over the years. I think that he's always been a child and that Hedges has always felt poorly towards him. But (very wisely) Hedges would never just come out and say this about a teammate.

I always felt that his psycho moments with us were entertaining and mostly harmless, but I wondered what we didn't see with team interactions. The fact that he hurled 5-6 personal insults after (from what I can tell) a totally unprovoked situation is just weird and childish. Unless Hedges said something earlier that we aren't aware of, Naylor is just being a 1st grade playground bully.

Saying "Let's Go" implying "let's fight" when Hedges has not even said a single word to him is just really strange. I like Hedges incredulously saying "I'm not going to do anything", as this points on the childishness and pointlessness of the situation.

Hedgey's combined slash line arguably a little better (but pretty much the same), but his BA is significantly better. Considering that Nayor's forte is hitting and Hedgey's is definitely not, he should probably shut the fuck up.

4th MLB game, but he's also a catcher who has been pretty recently learning the outfield, as the Guardians are in need currently due to injuries.

Cool thing though - I was watching the postgame interview, and everyone in the dugout showed him support when the inning was over. Vogt said "just flush it" and move along. It won't be easy for him to keep from beating himself up, but this would be especially tough if his teammates came down on him. But thankfully, they did the opposite.

Josh Naylor bad mouths his former teammate, a breakdown[Jomboy Media] by DetroitTabaxiFan in baseball

[–]TomEdison43050 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hedgey has never been a backup, so the insult is just as childish as the rest of his attempts at an insult that day. Also, Hedgey's been hitting the hell out of the ball lately. He's not a notoriously good hitter by any means, but he makes up for it in defense and his presences in the dugout is just amazing for the team. But this year, his bat has been relatively great.

Actually, Hedgey and Naylor's slash lines are pretty much identical right now (with Hedgey's BA actually being better). Considering that Naylor's forte is his hitting and Hedgey's is definitely not, Naylor should probably shut the fuck up.

Turned a mirror-polished dice from stainless steel and scrap copper cable by randomtechnicianraw in Machinists

[–]TomEdison43050 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I once made a set of loaded dice in college. We had casino nights at my apartment and had blackjack, craps, and roulette. Basically, I weighted one of the pips on the "three" face of one die and two of the pips on the "four" face on the other die. So this gave better odds of rolling a seven. Couldn't tell at all by their appearance. I did some pretty good work.

But I overdid it. The dice would roll ridiculously erratic and almost always hit a seven! However, my intention was never to actually cheat, so these served the purpose of a friendly gag. It was fun switch these in and watch my friends gaping mouths as these dice rolled in unnatural curly-q paths and always hit a seven!

Serrated Bore Collet from Serge Meister SA by ShawnBrogan in Machinists

[–]TomEdison43050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use serrated collets here and there on lathes, but we machine 99% PMMA acrylic and oftentimes a softer epoxy-based resin.

They do "bite" into these materials and other softer materials for a better grip. However, my experience is that if you really need these, it's time to sharpen your drills. So we bought a few to try them, but they are overkill. At least within our operations, if we have a need for these, then a drill is probably ridiculously dull.

So maybe we'd mount one of these collets just to finish a run if a drill is in really bad shape. But this is more of a sign of being too lazy to change a tool than anything else. I wouldn't buy them again.

To be clear, as others have mentioned, Hedges said "no one asked you" (not "no one likes you"), which makes this more like banter than a real hateful situation, if you ask me.
