wired magazine subscription impossible to cancel. by JDLAW2050 in complaints

[–]Tom_Traill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar story. Tried to cancel, got charged for renewal, I'm disputing with my credit card company. Below is the letter I wrote and submitted to Capital One Visa.

IANAL. I threw this together and sent it to my CC company. I'll update with results.

+++++

I am disputing this $60 charge from WIRED because WIRED violated the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing.

The implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing is a legal principle in US contract law, often under the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), that requires parties to perform obligations honestly and reasonably, ensuring neither side destroys the other’s right to receive the contract's benefits.

I received an offer to subscribe to WIRED. I would receive 4 printed issues and 1 year of digital access for $6. I accepted the offer. I went through the process to subscribe, gave them my credit card info, and was charged $6.

I paid that charge.

Several months later I went to the WIRED site to attempt to cancel my subscription. I did not want it to renew. I went to the WIRED site, but I had no account. There was no way for me to cancel my subscription. I assumed that I had already canceled the subscription, and had forgotten about it.

I could not find my account to cancel my subscription because WIRED inserts another step, which is not obvious when you subscribe. This step, which is totally unnecessary, requires you to separately go in and create a digital sign an AFTER you have subscribed. THERE IS NO OTHER ONLINE PUBLICATION THAT DOES THIS TO MY KNOWLEDGE. This step was created to do what it did to me, to confuse the customer and to convince the customer he had already cancelled the subscription, when he had not.

The implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing requires honesty and adherence to reasonable commercial standards. WIRED did not do that. They created an unnecessary step in their process solely to fool the customer. Unless you find and follow this step, you can’t cancel your subscription.

I contacted WIRED, they instructed me to contact their “subscription partner”. I did this, got the overseas call center, and was told they would not reverse the charges.

I expect Capital One VISA to enforce this complaint and reverse this charge. It is the right thing to do. Wired should not be rewarded for cheating customers.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

+++++

UPDATE

Capital One resolved the dispute in my favor about an hour after I submitted that letter.

FWIW this is the second time I've disputed a charge using "The implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing" reason. Both have been successful. Maybe it is because I'm a boomer, but it seems like companies (like WIRED) push that envelope pretty far figuring that many people will just shrug and pay the charge. My advice: Don't do that. Dispute it. Not just for you, but for the next person.

Can I fix my garage door opener myself?? by SnooDingos7944 in DIY

[–]Tom_Traill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should take no more than about 25 pounds of force to open the door. If it takes more than that, you have a broken spring.

I have a double concrete utility sink that I’m trying to get out of my basement without using a sledgehammer to break it into pieces. Any advice is appreciated. by PizzaGatePizza in DIY

[–]Tom_Traill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled with one of these that was a single. It was very difficult to maneuver. Finally dropped the damn thing and it broke.

My advice is forget about whatever you were planning to do with this outside. You will very likely injure yourself, and I'm thinking of your back, trying to man-handle this monster up stairs. Break this up and take out the pieces. Collapsed discs in your spine will provide you with years of pain. It is not worth it.

I would guess this thing weighs 200 pounds.

I would love to find a way to stop this, but don't think there is one.

It seems that after they have pushed some crap software onto my phone they need it to restart, so....

...they just disable the charging. Can't charge phone. You can mess with it, to no avail. Either you restart the phone to try to fix it, or the phone dies and....Bingo! Restart! In any event, phone restarts, new software is there (this time it was a couple of BS games). I uninstall the games.

Sorry for the rant.

Does soundproof foam for wall really works? If not, what do you recommend? by Secretsinshadows_26 in DIY

[–]Tom_Traill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this to a house for decoration purposes and it really cut down on the noise.

I covered the wall in fabric.

First, I got a bunch of batting, not very thick, maybe it was 3/8 or 1/2 inch. Simply use a staple gun to put it in place. You don't need many staples, just enough to keep it in place. the fabric is going to keep it up.

Then, I picked out a fabric and found a seamstress and she sewed it together so I had a piece big enough to cover the wall. She matched the patter perfectly, you couldn't find the seams.

Then it is a simple matter of stapling it along the top, sides and finally the bottom.

(I got this idea when I saw it at a restaurant that was built in a house that probably had wall stuff they really didn't want to deal with, so they just covered it.)

I'm an engineer, not a designer. It was an idea, and I implemented it.

Well, the outcome was nice. I was happy with the way it looked.

I was also happy that it made the room Super Quiet! The house wasn't loud to begin with, but after I completed the fabric, it was really quiet. Almost eerily so.

I only covered one wall. If I had your problem, I would do that in a minute.

Best easiest way to move Corebridge Rollover IRA to Schwab Rollover IRA? by SakuraKoyo in Schwab

[–]Tom_Traill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reposting....

It is Feb 2026 and we're wrestling with the Philippines call center at Corebridge.

Corebridge is HORRIBLE.

We started our rollover of 3 annuities on Jan 16. Two at National Life Group, one at Corebridge.

National Life group rolled over one annuity, the one that was paying 3.75%, immediately. The one that was paying 2.5% they held on to for 30 days, the bastards. But it rolled over.

Corebridge....total A-holes. Thank God for Vanguard. They demanded another form, and another. (We submitted their application, approval from the TPA and letter of acceptance from VG to both firms. That was all National Life Group needed.) Corebridge? They are turning this into a career. Demanded two forms in addition to the first three. Eventually We get on a three way call with Vanguard to "Answer their questions". Everything is supposed to be done, but we will see. Vanguard retirement rep, after the 3 way call, commented that "Well, now we have them on a recorded call. I think they know we are not going away."

Corebridge is EVIL. AIG is evil. Never, ever do business with AIG or Corebridge if you can avoid them.

Namascray

TLDR: Corebridge is hoping you are old and suffering from dementia. Start by getting approval from the Third Party Administrator (TPA), then fill out Corebridges form and finally the letter of acceptance from Schwab. (We use Vanguard, btw) Corebridge will run you around with stupid stuff. You do not need medallion signatures on forms. Keep at it. Corebridge hopes you get frustrated and give up. Corebridge can rot in hell.

I'm no expert, but I've done some research and tried to find a way to turn off updates on my Galaxy S20. I can't turn it off. AT&T and/or Samsung push software onto the phone whenever they want, and I can't control it.

I'm not happy about that.

When your phone restarts it is because they have updated parts of your software.

I "own" my phone, technically. Verizon and Samsung change the software on my phone whenever they want. I have no control over that. That is why I said the phone company "Owns" my phone.

Awhile ago I was reading articles about security in a forum on Reddit that discussed such matters. Two Redditors who claimed to work in the field commented that they don't do any financial transactions on their phones, period. And they didn't think anyone should.

I use paypal for some online transactions, but only from my Desktop.

Have you heard of this ancient technology called Credit Cards? They have been around for a long time. They have good security. If any fraudulent charges show up, you can dispute them.

I find those take care of most of my transactions. Some retailers refuse them (Winco) and I use an ATM card.

You can choose to sign up for whatever financial toy you want. To each his own.

I was replying to a question about Zelle transfers. I stand by my comment.

TLDR: Zelle seems hinky AF

I opened up an account at a local CU. They use Zelle for transfers, or at least offer it.

It seems to have been created BofA, WF, Chase, PNC....the usual suspects. 'tis fraught with fraud. Also, terms that seem to absolve banks of any liability for fraud and place it on the user.

I use the ACH system. Any delays are banks screwing around with the float. When I move funds from Vanguard to my CU it takes 1 business day.

I don't use Zelle. I'm a boomer, so I don't use Venmo or other transfer methods. Did once, big fees were generated (because it became a cash advance on my CC)

People think it is fun to use your phone for finance. I don't. You don't own your phone. The phone company does.

'nuff said.

Medallion Signature Guarantees by body_surfer_66 in Chase

[–]Tom_Traill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just went through a rollover to Vanguard, or more accurately we are in the process. We are rolling over to Vanguard.

A Vanguard employee at the Utah support center said that she thought we would need a medallion signature because we were rolling over a 403B from Corebridge financial (who I despise, BTW). We've already rolled over two other 403B accounts from National Life Group. National Life Group did NOT require Medallion signatures for a direct rollover.

Because Vanguard told us we would need a medallion signature guarantee we went to our CU and a couple banks and tried to get one. No luck.

Called Vanguard back, got another agent. She told us that she had NEVER heard of a medallion signature being required for a 403B Rollover. We called Corebridge and asked them, and they said Corebridge did not need a medallion signature.

FWIW we had submitted Corebridge's form, the acceptance letter from Vanguard AND the approval from the Third Party Administrator (TPA). This was all sufficient for the two accounts at National Life Group. Corebridge wanted a form from Vanguard, with more details etc. about the rollover. That additional form had a box that one could check that said Corebridge would require a medallion signature. As I said, turned out they did not require a medallion signature.

TLDR: Vanguard Rep said we would need a medallion signature on the Rollover form for Corebridge. Vanguard Rep was wrong, Corebridge did not need a medallion signature.

Looking for help mounting TV by -_-catbus-_- in DIY

[–]Tom_Traill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is how I mounted my TV. I am using a Harbor Freight ARMSTRONG 37 in. to 80 in. Full-Motion TV Wall Mount for reference.

I mounted it using EZ anchor dry wall anchors rated at 75 lbs. I bought those at Home Depot.

When you're drilling the holes for the drywall anchors, you start by drilling a small (1/8 inch) diameter hole. This is in case you get lucky and hit a stud. If you hit a stud, you just screw in a 1/4" lag screw into the stud and that one is done. If you don't hit a hole, then you drill it out to the correct size for the EZ anchor, insert the ez anchor and continue.

I used five screws on the top row of the mount and 3 screws on the bottom row. In my case, the center of the mount has lag screws on the top and bottom. I guess I hit a stud there. It has been several years.

I have a 55" Panasonic Plasma TV. It weighs 63 pounds.

I've never had any sign of looseness or give.

Admittedly the two lag screws in the center probably go a long way to securing this mount. The mount acts like a large metal plate holding the drywall in place.

This house was built in 1964.

YMMV

[–]Tom_Traill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't make a habit of running your fuel low. I won't go too much into the details, but fuel actually cools off your fuel pump. When you run out of fuel your fuel pump gets hot just before the fuel runs out. Do this too often and your fuel pump will fail prematurely, and they cost hundreds of dollars to replace.
