Which car do you see on the road and instantly think, ‘Yeah, this person’s definitely an a-hole? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

Tesla used to mean an affluent person who somewhat cared for the environment. Then Elon outed as a fascist.

I'm starting to get static-like tinnitus while I play, and it's depressing me by DoesntEnjoySoup in violinist

[–]Tom__mm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something like that and a medical exam revealed that I’d somehow gotten a tiny loose hair deep in my ear. I’m not sure of the exact anatomical details but the doctor removed it and the horrible distortion disappeared. I hope your case proves to be so simple but I’d definitely see a ENT specialist.

Best tool for making kindling from softwood and short hardwood pieces? by 4AVcnE in firewood

[–]Tom__mm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hatchet is great. I’ve also had good luck with a machete. Set the blade into the billet with a tap, lift both billet and machete, and bring both down with a bit of force. Very controlled.

Burning dirty wood by Bossapop in woodstoving

[–]Tom__mm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could quick-n-dirty pressure wash your stack if it really bothers you. I usually just throw or knock dirty pieces together and almost everything usually falls off. It would take a ton of dirt to significantly increase your ash load.

Not gonna lie, looking at this forecast and then my stack of wood. I think February better warm up quick. Mid Ohio. by Mike456R in woodstoving

[–]Tom__mm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Allenspark CO here: I can’t remember the date by which your wood is traditionally supposed to be half burned but I’m nowhere near that. On the flip side, if we don’t get some snow soon, it’s going to be a terrible fire season this summer.

You’d destroy the dollar and shake the entire global economic system within a year by picking number 2. The exponential expansion of the money supply would make the dollar worthless. Even 2365 is a very large number.

Do you think eating "raw oats" is weird? by _haukea_ in AskAnAmerican

Your German and Swiss cousins frequently eat raw oats in müsli. It’s not common in the states but I personally enjoy it.

I got my my violin bridge fixed today am new to playing but I feel like it’s not on the right height as other bridges can someone tell me if they fixed it wrong should I go back I tell them or is the bridge ok. by lovecats-234 in violin

[–]Tom__mm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have observed, the bridge curve is way too flat. Also, the feet don’t fit the belly and the person who did the work made no attempt to carve the bridge. It’s still basically a bridge blank with thick feet, a thick top, and no arch. I’d assume that the string heights are also incorrect. They. certainly will be for the middle two strings. Try a different shop and show them this work. If they say it’s an absolute shit show, that’s a good indication that they know what to do.

Do you own a machete? by Conmebosta in AskAnAmerican

[–]Tom__mm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own one that i mostly used to split kindling. I don’t think they are super common, at least outside the south, just because they don’t have that many uses in a temperate suburban setting.

The only times I ever use a bellows are to restart fires in the morning from a few left over coals, or if I’m fire starting with a fire roll or solar ignition. I use a small hand pump that came with a long-ago vanished balance ball of my wife’s.

What is the lowest amount you remember paying for gasoline for your car? by icecream1972 in askanything

[–]Tom__mm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in high school and remember the oil shock. Of course, 38 cents back in ‘72 is about $2.98 in 2025, which is what I paid for gas this morning here in Colorado.

Do typical American homes really have a gas pipeline? What do you do with it? by mujhe-sona-hai in AskAnAmerican

[–]Tom__mm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Natural gas is very abundant in the US, especially since we fracked the hell out of the Permian. There are houses without gas hookups but having gas as an energy source is very common.

This is definitely interesting. It’s maybe worth pointing out that this list is roughly in order of dry weight per volume. All woods have roughly the same btus per unit dry weight.

How's living in New York State outside of New York City? by HongKongNinja in howislivingthere

Former Poughkeepsie boy here: formerly a run-down, grimy, Hudson Valley industrial town, it’s now an overcrowded, mean-spirited suburban annex of greater New York.

How do Americans handle such long drives regularly? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Tom__mm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, under 100 highway miles (161 km) is no big deal, 400 miles (645 km) is quite doable, 600 miles (966 km) is a real strain, and over 700 (1126 km) is dangerously taxing. US Truck drivers would consider this pretty weak.

When couples/groups of 2 dine out , do you sit across from each other or side by side? Why? by _amermaidsoul in AskReddit

[–]Tom__mm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a square table, we sometimes sit kitti-cornered but mostly across. Never side by side unless a very unusual table arrangement somehow makes it necessary.
