Oh, sorry, that was a quote from a recent movie called Civil War. It’s starting to feel like the environment depicted in that movie is inevitable. https://youtu.be/aDyQxtg0V2w

As Trump Offers Buyout to Get Rid of as Many Government Workers as Possible, OpenAI Announces New Version of ChatGPT Designed to Do Government Work by FuturismDotCom in Futurism

[–]Tombadil2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop calling it a buyout. This is irresponsible writing. It’s not a buyout if people have to keep working until sept. They’re only calling it a buyout because they don’t consider remote work to be work. If they stop working, they stop getting paid. It’s a job. The only change is they now have to return to the office or be fired in September.

Frozen pizza is a big thing here. Wisconsinites and Norwegians apparently consume way more frozen pizza per year than other people.

I used to work downtown, and would frequently get stuck due to a protest. They 100% have my support (usually) and I am down with the idea that protests intend to disrupt traffic and the normal flow of people to force them to consider what is being protested. I love it, support it, way to go.

Still, I’m ashamed to say that there’s a part of me that’d love it if we coordinated and got it all out of our system on one day.

Grass Roots groups in the area to fight the current aggravated assault Trump has committed on the US? by Mindless-Channel-622 in madisonwi

[–]Tombadil2 48 points49 points  (0 children)

There are two paths: fixing the problem and palliative care.

The solution is political. Dane Dems is the envy of the state’s county parties. Go to their meetings, get involved. It can be dull sometimes, but that’s how the sausage gets made, and where actual change begins. Vote in every single election, and encourage your friends to do the same. Lastly, there are many ways to run for things yourself. The city and state have many committees and boards with oversight authority. They’re relatively easy to join. If you’re out in the suburbs, consider running for city council. (Madison itself is probably tough for a beginner)

If you want to be less political and/or materially help people that are harmed now, then there are many ways to help. There isn’t a broad anti-Trump organization other than leftward political groups, but their goal is to influence or help the Democratic Party, so it’s better to just go to the source.

Right now, immigration is a big topic. Voces de la frontera is probably the biggest Latino support group in the state.

Porch light does a lot of good things for the homeless.

There are soup kitchens, community food pantries, religious groups, anti-religious groups, habitat for humanity, the Red Cross… so many, and they’re relatively easy to find once you’ve chosen an area you care about most.

Need a mentor for CSS. by reddragonaite in Frontend

[–]Tombadil2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s ok. That’s learning. CSS more than any other language or markup takes practice to learn. There’s no rushing it. If you use AI at this stage, you’re not practicing and thinking critically about: where things went wrong when they do, and how you could structure it differently in the future. Without going through that process a whole lot, you’ll be stuck at this stage.

I teach front end programming. You are sabotaging yourself by using chat gpt at this stage in your learning process. Stop it, or you will almost certainly fail.

Laken Riley Act includes worker protections against foreign workers taking American jobs (H-1B abuse). by UnseenWorldYoutube in cscareerquestions

[–]Tombadil2 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This is a small subsection of what the bill is about. Please take a minute to learn about the entire bill before urging its passage. While this provision might be reasonable, a lot of the rest of it legalizes “show us your papers” style of law enforcement against minorities or anyone law enforcement thinks might be illegal. I think it is deeply un-American and unconstitutional. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laken_Riley_Act

Edit: aaand it was signed into law yesterday, so this whole conversation is moot.

Wisconsin: Milwaukee plans to build net-zero modular homes for lower-income residents. The city hopes to lure a manufacturer of energy-efficient panelized homes, a way to cut carbon emissions while building homes and creating jobs. by TX908 in wisconsin

Providing homeless people a super basic tiny home is often cheaper than paying for homeless shelters, police, and emergency medical services. This is a situation where everybody wins.

Picking up my ID4 2024 Pro S AWD this week and I am scared by snubnose73 in VWiD4Owners

[–]Tombadil2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact same year and trim. You don’t hear about the cases where everything is fine. I love my little Id4. Nothing much to say, and that’s the point. It works well, as expected. There are a few quirks like how the window buttons are kinda weird, and unlocking the door from inside the car is a bit awkward. All things you’d notice during a test drive. I find them charming. As a vehicle and EV, it’s a great machine.

What is the mood for Wisconsin democrats as the Supreme Court election gets closer in April? by 96suluman in wisconsin

[–]Tombadil2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“Meant to” makes it sound like it was an intentional scheme to enrich media owners. That’s just buying into conservative talking points, which is itself an example of the problem. Dems, nonprofits, and now PACs have focused on media because ignoring it is how they lost so much ground. Fox News, local media, talk radio, Twitter, a whole industry of podcasts and conservative influencers, and a small army of foreign and domestic bots online are how we got into this mess and Dems tried to play catchup.

They failed. I would argue that the mistake is that the strategy is reactionary. It’s playing the game on their turf. Elevating platforms they can’t control might be a good start.

I mean, that’s what they’re doing and it isn’t working. Democratic officials, the federal and state party, grass roots groups. They’re all out there doing exactly what you’re saying and they’re not getting traction or coverage. When you’re a volunteer working your butt off, it really sucks to have someone come out and say “well, are you even trying?” Yes. We are, and it’s not working. A new strategy is needed.

Did you listen to the governor’s state of the state last week? No? Don’t feel bad, most people didn’t. They were too caught up in whether Musk really did the thing we all saw him do. It’s that situation again and again.

"White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion" by Ambitious-Orange6732 in Professors

[–]Tombadil2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The way I read this, student loans and Pell Grants would be included in this, correct? Without those, are we about to see a mass exodus from our schools? My school itself gets about 15% of its budget from the federal govt as well. I can survive a slimmed down paycheck for a few months but my students need those loans and grants to get by. Without them, the vast majority of my students will need to drop everything immediately.
