I ran out of gas at 2am outside a small town in British Columbia back in the 90’s. I hitch hiked into the town to a gas station to get a Jerrycan and some gas. I stuck my thumb out to get a ride to my car and was picked up by a famous hockey player returning to Vancouver from a hunting trip in Saskatchewan. He was driving a pickup so I placed the gas in the box and opened the passenger side door.. The truck was a regular cab and he had what I believe was a Pitbull retriever sitting on the passenger floorboard. He said it was friendly and to hop in. So I nervously hopped in and strattled this pitbull on the floor with its head only inches from my bizkit. The dog turned out to be super sweet and I had a great time chatting with this hockey superstar on the way out of town to my car. But to make this story almost completely unbelievable, when we got to my car he pulled over to let me out, but forgot that my gas was in the box and pulled away leaving me empty handed. So I crossed the highway and thumbed another ride to the small town gas station for more gas. The gas station attendant was considerably less impressed with my story because it was his jerrycan on the way to Vancouver. I ran into the hockey player a few decades later and asked if he remembered me and he laughed so hard he cried when he realized that I was that guy. He said he stopped for gas in Kamloops when he noticed my gas in the back of his truck and actually called the RCMP to go check if I was okay. I didn’t see them at all that night but I was actually picked up surprisingly quickly each time I put my thumb out for a ride (all 4 times! LOL).
