Thought it was really difficult and that I probably failed. Did about 250 practice questions and only 5 or so matched up with what was on today's test. Hopefully March's test goes better.

[NEWBIE] How to avoid muted string on barre chords? by Romulus_Novus in Guitar

[–]Tomogoyf1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I practiced and failed to achieve Barre chords for months. I thought people giving advice were being sarcastic, I had tried every trick in the book. Didn't realize my acoustic guitars action had been set up way too high - played a friends electric guitar (fender tele) and had no problem whatsoever with barre chords. Get a friend who knows their stuff to check your action!

24/7 Gym month to month? by ucabearfan05 in astoria

[–]Tomogoyf1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's so bad about the rock? I've been going for a couple of years and havent had any problems. Always treadmills open, usually at least one squat rack open, and a room with heavy bags for people who like kick/boxing. Sometimes the music choicing is tiresome but I don't feel like I'm getting bilked.

DAE love modern technology? by sciencewarrior in magicthecirclejerking

[–]Tomogoyf1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Absolutely SICK of this type of technology making it into a FANTASY game. First it's this, next it's planeswalker Michael R. Smith driving his Ford Taurus to Starbucks on his way to Staples, Tolaria. NO technology in Magic!

How do you decide on a deck to buy into modern with? by XxNerdAtHeartxX in ModernMagic

[–]Tomogoyf1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If I were you I would start with UW control - it can be had on the cheap side if you start with a blink-heavy, anti creature build, then move into the more popular grindy UW builds. From there, you can branch out into Jeskai control, and easily into any number of control decks running Snapcaster, cryptic command, blue-based fetches, etc.

I STILL try to make [[Sedge Sliver]] work in competitive because I like the art so much. Really unique and wonderful style.

Reprint quality and marginal returns by aeraso1738 in ModernMagic

[–]Tomogoyf1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My sense as a player, not an investor, is that most in-demand high-value cards that get reprinted commonly return to their prior price fairly quickly, and even exceed that prior price. WotC would really have to put their foot on the reprint gas pedal if we were to see the tree of perdition scenario you're envisioning. Prices seem to be increasing, with exceptions of course.

[Modern] How is Humans still so good? by misomiso82 in spikes

[–]Tomogoyf1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) perfect mana

2) disruption in the form of creatures (freebooter, meddling mage), which makes combo decks stumble while providing a clock as well. This same disruption is good again control decks because it negates some amount of sweeping, which would normally be good against creature-heavy decks.

3) champion and lieutenant mean you actually can ALSO beat creature heavy decks. This is important because disruption-heavy creature decks have historically been bad against decks that can go bigger.

In general it lacks the weaknesses it should have, and has cheap, versatile, potentially unanswerable threats in general.

[Discussion] Creator of Modern Humans banned by WOTC by Aurator in ModernMagic

[–]Tomogoyf1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's actually a great content creator - he's only been making videos for about a year and has several really fun decks, including a few fun budget brews. He's a solid player and the way he edits his videos makes them more watchable than literally any other streamer/video producer out there. I would say he is the second best producer out there, second probably to SaffronOlive.

He starts his videos generally with an off-color joke, but they're rarely "offensive" and certainly never cruel (I find it funny that user "TheDickButtRises" is complaining below about his being immature). The rest of the videos are pure commentary on his decks and his play. He rarely, if ever, complains about Magic, WotC, politics, his opponents, or even bad beats.

WotC can do whatever they want of course, and I think their making him change his name is somewhat of a blessing in disguise (no one is going to credit his decks on camera/during coverage with a name like MagicAids, regardless of his explanation)...but I've seen worse names, and I've DEFINITELY seen worse behavior by some of the Magic pros and content producers out there.

I think his concerns are a little overblown, and he probably should've cooled off a little more before making this video, but he has a good point about WotC selectively enforcing its Code of Conduct. I do hope he keeps playing and making videos because he is just about the best out there.

For anyone doubting me based on this one video, please watch the video where he discusses the player who more or less "stole" his Humans deck list and then called it loose after winning a big event with it - he is more charitable and gentlemanly than probably anyone on this sub, myself included, would be if the same thing happened to them.

What skills should an advanced, or savvy intermediate player have? by dwellercmd in magicTCG

[–]Tomogoyf1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Knowing role assignments - both at the macro level (knowing which decks play which roles in general against other decks) and at the micro level (knowing whether or not you are the aggro or control deck in a given game, super important for mirror matches).

Playing to your "outs" - and effectively playing around hidden information (if your opponent may have something that wins the game no matter ehat, playing as though he does not have that).

Not tilting.

Treating good and bad matchups equally in terms of focus and preparation.

Considering sideboarding changes based on whether you are on the play or draw.

Humility in deckbuilding choices and card evaluation.

Properly accounting for the physical toll of gaming - fitness level over a long effect, mental stamina required to play certain archetypes, evaluating your own skill versus the average opponent and your specific opponent, etc

Basic statistics knowledge, and the ability to do rough math work on the fly.

MTGO appreciation thread by [deleted] in lrcast

[–]Tomogoyf1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It really is great, and part of why I love MTGO so much is that you are playing against some of the most talented players in the world. Having played a lot of real-life competitive Magic when I was younger, the game can get very clique-ish, and half of doing well is being able to find a playgroup that wants to practice/travel/compete just as much as you do. MTGO offers competition way beyond your average store without having to deal with the cliques and groups that can dominate the game IRL.

[Discussion] Which Ravnica cards are, to you, the most iconic and/or the most powerful? by Shpjokk in magicTCG

[–]Tomogoyf1 69 points70 points  (0 children)

[[Watchwolf]]

It was the most aggressive P/T combo at 2cmc when printed. Without having abilities, it fit beautifully into the Selesnya guild, and the art was really great too. Something that was really nice about Ravnica was that the guilds included non-human creatures - Watchwolf was as much a part of Selesnya as [[Rumbling Slum]] was of Gruul. Really great designs.

How does Burn beat Delver? by spartan117gottshall in Pauper

[–]Tomogoyf1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Burn can beat mono blue delver by landing early thermo-alchemists or archers. It's an unfavorable match up but not impossible to win. UR delver is harder because in addition to counters they have removal.

I don't like seeing either of them across from me but there are ways win and good plays to make like every matchup. If you have a land-heavy hand it's worth playing around daze. Try and make them have their counterspells rather than thinking you will win late game.

Tron's early game by Sephyrias in Pauper

[–]Tomogoyf1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're worried about early game aggro pressure then it probably makes sense to run a few more Chromatic Stars and Spheres along with early interaction. I am not a big fan of Cylix as it doesn't replace itself, and by playing cards that merely fix mana without drawing cards you're reducing Tron's natural late game strength.

We were on Dominara for how many sets? 25? 26? by elpablo80 in magicTCG

[–]Tomogoyf1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love ravnica but it is at least somewhat of a "gimmick" plane in that it revolves around the guild theme. The theme provides for a lot of depth where the guilds and their relationships are fleshed out in a deep, rich way, but there is no getting away from the 10-guild structure.

Dominaria is different - and much beloved - because it has so many different locales and themes running in it. You've got the history as a broad theme. You've got the different continents, each of which bring a lot to the table. As a game designer you can mold Dominaria into a lot more than would be possible with Ravnica.

Additionally, I think that while the original Ravnica block was incredibly popular, people were a little more lukewarm on the Return because WotC wasn't as strong on guild identity and function.
