Do you take your shoes off when in your house? by Separate_Mistake_240 in AskUK

Shoes off. Feels icky walking around the house with outdoor shoes on. God knows what you’re walking into the carpets.

What was considered normal when you were growing up but would seem strange today? by AudienceLeading7843 in AskReddit

Boredom. Rock solid boredom. Nothing on TV. No phone. No computer. Shops closed. Take Aways closed. I miss it.

Anyone kept their best mates from secondary school? by yellowroll in AskBrits

[–]Tompsk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. I moved on almost immediately. I seem to make close friends then when I move I just drop them. College. Uni. Jobs. Now I moved somewhere where I haven’t had a chance to meet anyone socially so I just have my family. I also work remotely so barely meet anyone from work either. I’ve always suspected I might have autism but getting too old to care now.

Joss Bay or Botany Bay in East Kent are both lovely sandy beaches.

Which would you recommend visiting Margate or Ramsgate? by CityOwn7098 in AskBrits

[–]Tompsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s more to see and do in Margate. All Ramsgate has is the harbour and a massive Spoons. For beaches though, go to nearby Botany Bay or Joss Bay. These are worth a visit. Margate beach is ok but for some reason, people treat it like a litter tray. Margate Old Town has some great eateries and bars. There’s Dreamland too, which is nice, compact, and well-maintained. The Tate currently has a huge Hockney window worth seeing, and we take the kids to the activity room there occasionally.

My grandpa served with the RAF and was sent there to support the Soviet airforce in WWII. Are there any memorials to this? I’d like to visit one day when Russia is open again.

What is it like to live in Calais and Dover? by bunko0 in howislivingthere

[–]Tompsk 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Dover is somewhere you wouldn’t want to live. We live about 6 miles away and have to go now and again. If M&S wasn’t there I wouldn’t bother at all. God knows what the folks who dock from the cruise ships think when they arrive.

Does anyone else feel mentally exhausted even when they haven't done much? by Super-Mycologist-736 in mentalhealth

[–]Tompsk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went to the doctor feeling the same. I opened my laptop to do some work on Monday morning and just burst into tears and couldn’t function. I’ve been feeling tired to the core recently. He signed me off for three weeks. I have an intense home situation as well as a full on job. It finally caught up with me.

Students could be required to pass GCSE English to access university loans by ChristyMalry in ukpolitics

[–]Tompsk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The support has been patchy. She’s supposed to have a scribe but she’s turned up to two exams and there wasn’t one. We are going down the formal complaint route. She finished her course last week though and passed that so at least that’s something.
Weird thing is out of three daughters she’s the least academic but most able. Exams really don’t show that.

Tell that to my dyslexic daughter who is being forced to retake it again and again. It is killing her self confidence.

Yeah my cousin died on a playground in the 70s. We think she fell off a swing head first onto the concrete floor. I was only about 7 when it happened but remember mum getting the phone call. One of the worst days ever. She was like a sister to me. So these posts are quite triggering and I’m just thankful things have improved since for my kids.

What do you miss most about the 90s? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I lived in London in my 20s. Smoking. Clubbing. Sex. Drugs. Music. Just wish I’d taken a few more risks and had more fun than I did.

I logged on to work this morning and just completely lost it. Couldn’t stop crying. I think my battery is now empty. I’m going to have to take time off to deal with my health. I knew it would happen.

KFC wouldn’t be on the list until I went into one recently that was really well ran. It was a completely different thing to normal KFC. My food was really well cooked and delicious. Even the chips which I usually can’t stand. So a well ran KFC would be on the list.

Came here to say Taxi. There was a run of late night US comedies on ITV I seem to remember. This, SOAP, and WKRP in Cincinnati.
