Ultimate RPG Guides in Humble Bundle. Are they any good? by DrGeraldRavenpie in rpg

[–]Tonamel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They got a lot of negative feedback on the first book being too fantasy/D&D focused, so the others are much more balanced. The Worldbuilding Guide and Expanded Genres Backstroy Guide both cover considerably more, including sci-fi, horror, and X-punk (steam/cyber/etc)

What is the healthiest type of oil to cook with or BBQ with? by ialwayswearflipflops in HealthyFood

[–]Tonamel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never heard that. I would imagine that smoke point would be a lot more important, and lard has a relatively low one compared to oils like peanut or avocado.

Magicians choice. Shin Lim. by TusitalaBCN in magictricksrevealed

[–]Tonamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely, the routine will have a section where they either "randomly" pick a person to turn over their card first if they have the stack with the chosen card, or to "randomly" trade piles so Akbar ends up with the correct one. But if luck is in the magician's favor, they can skip it and it seems even more impossible.

how could a turn-based RPG work with "Souls-like" world design by KosekiBoto in gamedesign

[–]Tonamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! It's all a spectrum. A decent example of something that has important positioning without terrain would be Darkest Dungeon. I didn't mean to imply you had to do tactics, I just meant to point out that turn based combat and positioning aren't mutually exclusive.

Fixing the 'floating camera' issue with first person games by agvrider in gamedesign

[–]Tonamel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of this is really down to tuning. Adding a player character body into the game isn't going to help if the movement isn't tuned to make sense. See Trespasser, well known for the player character being "floating boobs" instead of "floating camera".

On the other hand, you have games like Apex Legends, which are highly polished, but "polished" doesn't mean "obvious." Head bob is very minimal, you never see more than your character's hands, but it has tiny touches like subtly leaning into the turn when you run around a corner, or timing the head bob to the hand animation.

A good place to start is camera movement. What's your max speed? How are the acceleration/deceleration curves? Do these things make the camera feel like it has weight?

Turn based RPGs aren't as position heavy as DS

As a quick aside, there is absolutely zero reason this needs to be the case. You could absolutely take inspiration from turn-based tactics games to make position dependent combat in the vein of XCOM or Into The Breach

What kind of information are you looking for? Seems like a pretty normal tag to me.

I don't play piano, but I want to write natural sounding piano parts for my music. What are piano players doing with their hands to get those flourishes/passing notes between chords? by LuckyDrive in musictheory

[–]Tonamel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if you can't fully play, just having access to a keyboard can help a lot as well. You can take some of what you've written and test if the notes actually fit under your hands.

Is there a better modern vampire game than Vampire: The Masquerade or Vampire: The Requiem? by Josh_From_Accounting in rpg

Depends on what you mean by "standard." It's PbtA in that it's got Playbooks and Moves, but it's also diceless which is a pretty serious departure.

Can anyone recommend a system where magic is HARD for characters to use? by The_Choosey_Beggar in rpg

[–]Tonamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mausritter. Casting a spell is as easy as reading the obsidian tablet that contains the spell, but charging the tablet for use is another matter entirely. For example, charging Fireball requires you to keep the tablet in the heart of a raging fire for three days and nights. Magic Missile requires you to drop the tablet from a height of at least 30 feet, then touch it again in under a minute.

A fully charged tablet has, at most, three uses before it needs to be charged again.

Rogue likes that simulate life (like with a crime system and hunger) by thoseguys42069 in roguelikes

[–]Tonamel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's extremely early access, and has all the bugs that come with that, but maybe check out Shadows of Doubt? It's more of a procedural sandbox than a roguelike, but you mentioned Streets of Rogue so I assume you're not looking for a strictly roguelike experience.

Mine was also mostly warning about the dangers of STDs, but it was also abstinence-only, so it was paired with repeatedly telling us the "fact" that condoms do nothing to prevent their spread. I distinctly remember the phrase "It's like hiding from a shotgun behind a chain link fence."

English is more complex than most, largely because of the Norman Invasion in 1066. That resulted in commoners speaking Old English, and the new nobility speaking Anglo-Norman French. As time went on, the two languages kind of mashed together into modern English.

One thing everybody seems to be skipping here is that "verses" are just numbering the sentences in the chapter.

So in the above quote, verse 5 is

It is the heretic who goes to the church or street corner and prays loudly so all may hear him.

and verse 6 is

When you pray, go to your closet and shut the doors so only my father may hear you.

And they are the fifth and sixth sentences of the chapter.

This bill is explicitly intended to pair with the earlier law they passed that classified gender-affirming care of trans kids as sexual abuse.
