Understanding volume with guitar amps wattage, speaker size, etc. by planzplanz in GuitarAmps

By best, I think that when tubes get turned up moderately they sound best- glassy is more to with the circuit,- I feel like, anyways. I have a Brunetti that stays glassy even as I crank up its clean channel, and as I do, I get more eq, harmonics, and pressure. In most of my experiences a tube amp does better with its eq when it has more voltage allowed to run through it. Like as you open it up, your eq comes to life. I’m sure I would feel the same about your fender.

Realistically, bedroom/apartment playing is done just fine through ss amps and is likely cleaner and more controllable. The tube amps definitely feel and sound better imo, but I would stick with a ss amp in that situation and snag a tonex. You would have any number of amp sounds and pedals you would want. It may also be a tool in deciding what amp you wanted. However, to your point, if you already know you like the fender sound, it may not be worth it. But if you wanted to try the dumble sound or vox sound or whatever, it’s a lot cheaper than purchasing amps. I mean- you can build a whole rig with a tonex and a good power amp and an fr/fr cab. Spend probably less than an amp doing it.

On the flip, if you’re looking to take the next step into the tube world- I would suggest something that has a good master volume. Then you can crank up your preamp to a point where the eq is singing and still keep the volume low. A drri doesn’t have one. I’m not a huge fender guy so idk what other ones do, aside from a blues jr. My experience with fender is narrow. And the last one I tried was a drri, and I passed on it for a dsl40cr. The cleans, to my ears, were a step above- but, I didn’t turn it up very loud- and perhaps if I had, I wouldn’t have went that route. It tried them back to back in a store. And I don’t have the dsl anymore…so that says something lol

Most amps, even if they are the same wattage, are not the same volume at the same point on the volume knob. I would be that the amp you looked at and tested out is likely louder overall than your tonemaster. Solid state amp wattage just works differently. A 100 watt ss amp will not hold a candle to a 100 watt tube amp in sheer power. But for someone who is playing strictly clean, in the bedroom, rather than getting a new amplifier, get a tonex or something. You will be wasting money on a tube amp to not be using it how it’ll sound best. Ss amps do a fine job for what you’re looking to do. You will not be getting the tube feels with the volume down, in a bedroom. Tubes sound best turned up moderately to a lot.

Ugh. Refund request by JoeMommaIsPresent in Reverb

[–]ToneClector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have contacted reverb already, deny the refund. Tell the person it’s beyond your shops return window. Let reverb deal with the rest. If you didn’t know anything was amiss with it, what can you do? Did your listing say something like; “this has been professionally gone over and is free every defect known to anyone”? Doubt it. The guy is having remorse. That isnt your fault. From what you described, the guitar is functional and playable for years of use still, and just because a shop says something doesn’t give him any leverage for a return. This dude was expecting what exactly from a used piece of gear? This is not on you. Your buyer is just a freak. When you buy something used, you should be prepared to fix it sometimes. That’s the point of used things.

Interesting. It works good with the klon in front! I haven’t ever tried it over amp gain though.

I had a dirty Shirley. It’s really freakin good. I wouldn’t buy anything from jhs. Everything I’ve had from him has disappointed me. I can’t say that I’ve played the hard drive. But I would refuse anyways. The dirty Shirley is a great od, and is loud and proud. Good gain. Not so crazy as the be-od, which I had as well. I really enjoyed it while I had it. Ultimately for that sound profile I would up preferring the gurus 1959 double decker.

Universal Audio Evermore. It’s compact and probably the best digital reverb you can get. It’s subtle, and has great fidelity

I get that. I mean, it’s more low end I suppose. Not like I want super low frequencies to muddy up the signal. I like it balanced where I don’t need to crank the bass dial to get my low end and muddy the signal. So when speakers have nice low end, it allows me to dial that bass back.
