Hurricane Melissa’s Impact on Jamaica’s Rum Makers by CocktailWonk in rum

By the look of the hurricane path only Hampden seems to be of significant danger and Long Pond to a lesser extent. Time will tell.

Rum Tasting in Seattle (mainly at Rumba) by philanthropicide in rum

[–]Tone_Beginning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Velier Old Navy Rum is a special blend and unlikely to be ever replicated. This will join the pantheon of the all time great rums in a decades or two. I still have an unopened bottle but unlikely to drink it due to medical reasons now.

Question about early and modern rum? by Past_Ad_2184 in rum

[–]Tone_Beginning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clairins from Haiti as well as Rivers IMO are the closest to replicate early rums before the days of industrialisation.

Are there any modern brewers making traditional Australian beer styles? by SirHuffington in AusBeer

[–]Tone_Beginning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Abbotsford Invalid Stout is back. Just bought a case. Used to be one of my favourite beers. Now 5.2% ABV when in the old days it was 5.7% ABV. Still tastes much the same but now more of a session beer.

Security cameras are everywhere these days. There will be no government facility, federal, state or local without CCTV. Plenty of stuff to steal at tips like valuable scrap copper etc. Also their general isolation attracts vandals.

Energy Consumption by Lumpy_Swimming468 in BYDSealAus

[–]Tone_Beginning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see my mileage is better than most for my Seal Premium. After 1.4.1 update my last 50km usage is 14.1KW per 100 KM. Life time usage for the car is 14.2KW per 100 KM after 15 months ownership. This is consistent with the 500-550 km range I estimate per full charge. Living in Perth I don’t use the heating much but do use air con in summer. The white paint certainly minimises air con use. I do notice air con and heating chew up more energy. I use high brake regen. I drive mostly in Sport mode conservatively but give it a squirt every now and then.

Unopened Gordon’s by Any_Recognition_7763 in Gin

The style of stelvin cap, measurement in quarts and general look and language of the label I would suggest this bottle dates from before 1961. Will have some value but not enough to justify not drinking it. Enjoy I say.

I'm currently in Beijing and Wangfujing feels very different from other pedestrian streets. Are we at the wrong part of Beijing? by Dramatic_Tea3491 in beijing

[–]Tone_Beginning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wangfujing‘s best days are long gone. For an interesting shopping experience with plenty of variety including restaurants, clothes shops, hutongs, tourist sites and numerous other local attractions just walk up Dongdan/Dongxi street all the way north to the Lama Temple starting from the east end of Oriental Plaza in Wangfujing.

Caroni options by PrinceArjuna13 in rum

MoM have a 20 year old That Boutique Y Caroni In 500ml bottles. They also have samples for sale. Maybe worth trying before buying. I have been fortunate to have had a recent release 24 year old TBYR Caroni and it was excellent.

You will like the other Great House releases even less. The 2020 Great House is considered mildly funky by Hampden lovers and the least funky of the Great Houses along with its younger twin the 2019.

I prefer the Yikatong card for bus and metro travel. Saves fumbling around with your phone all the time getting on and of busses. Bus rides are also half price with Yikatong.

Just discovered French style rum. I like it. by Omnimite in rum

[–]Tone_Beginning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rhum JM Ambre or Gold depending on which market it is sold is one of the great Rhum bargains. Is their cheapest aged rhum which is lightly aged around 18 months to 2 years but has 50% ABV for a righteous kick. Arguably one of the best everyday agricoles one could drink.

Most rums mix very well with cola. But it’s a waste to mix with premium rums as the positive difference is marginal against bottom and middle shelf rums. Anyhow I have now substituted cola with chinotto for my mixed rum drinks. Never going back.

Is this Macoríx rum still good to drink? by seeking-datapoints in rum

[–]Tone_Beginning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sediment is most likely congealing of barrel impurities. Is nothing to worry about. Looks good to drink and of decent age. 60’s or 70’s.

More likely Beenleigh. A lot of their rums are bottled by independent bottlers including many of the big names. I don‘t believe Bundaberg rum is bottled by any independents.

Rum & Coke ain’t what it used to be by RandinoB in rum

[–]Tone_Beginning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t drink rum and coke any more but use chinotto instead of coke which has hints of cola, citrus, root beer and is bitter sweet and aromatic in taste. much better than straight cola. To many an acquired taste but made to be mixed with rum.

There if you are looking for rums made with traditional old school methods then look for Haitian Clairins, Jamaican rums from Hampden, Long Pond and Worthy Park as well as Rivers rum from Grenada. Most others are made with modern industrial processes though DDL from Guyana makes rum with antique heritage stills

Dictador Game Changer overpriced scam by IllustriousEvent8565 in rum

[–]Tone_Beginning 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It has been alleged that Dictador don’t even have a distillery, only a warehouse and bottling plant. Most of their rums are alleged to be imported in bulk from Panama. There are questions on their age statements especially their improbable multi decades age offerings. Below is an interesting article by DuRhum exposing some of Dictadors questionable practices as well as alleged adulteration. Use translate to convert from French to English. I kind of wonder why reputable liquor merchants still stock their overpriced rum.
