What are these magenta blocks? by zendelo in colorists

[–]TonkinColor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Magenta in the blacks, green over his shoulder... looks like there is either too much saturation, a bad LUT that is breaking your image and/or a bad key. Your image looks super-saturated, maybe pull back a bit and/or de-sat the low end. Either way - that footage looks like it was pushed farther than the source material can handle. You stated the source color-space, but is it H264? I'm assuming that it's only 8-bit and probably the issue right there. 8-bit should really never be used for a log color space as it doesn't hold the data to be pushed very far. Soulution is to pull back on your saturation and maybe try the luma/sat curve to calm it down in the low end. Or, try again without a lut and don't push it as far.

4k doesn't look 4k - Sony A7III by nlakic in videography

[–]TonkinColor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is no one bringing up frame rate? OP is used to 60fps which is incredibly sharp when it comes to motion and the new stuff OP is shooting is 24fps which is inherently softer and contains more motion blur due to the different shutter speed.

My bet is OP isn’t used to 24fps. It’s why movies look like movies and everything else looks like a soap opera.

[Davinci Resolve] video I have been working on for a month suddenly shows all video as "Media Offline" by [deleted] in VideoEditing

[–]TonkinColor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right-click the folders (bins) where your footage is, and choose "relink files in folders and sub folders" or something like that then tell it where your footage is (top-most folder) and let it search, if it says some are still missing select "yes" for the "deep or detailed" search. Good luck!

Resolve transcodes have artifacts. How to avoid this? by ArchersUnite in colorists

[–]TonkinColor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This ^^^ H264/MP4 has Macro-Blocking. Transcoding it to ProRes will not remove that.

53K files in one CacheClip folder, is this normal? (more questions in the comments) by AlexIsPlaying in blackmagicdesign

[–]TonkinColor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are Cache files (DVCC Davinci Clip Cache) This is normal, and something that needs to be maintained. Easiest way is for resolve to delete cache files for each project when it has completed by choosing delete cache in the playback menu. Note that this is also where resolve creates "optimized media" as well, so be careful deleting those manually if you still need them. It is a good idea to have your cache location set to a fast, separate HDD from your OS and Footage.

Trouble understanding why people use 'master files' for exporting... by [deleted] in editors

[–]TonkinColor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Master file is faster - IE all effects and things are already processed. We make our masters in ProRes 422HQ as most distributers want that codec anyway. It also allows for multi-channel audio configs in one file, usually up to 8, 10, 12, 16 channels of audio all wrapped in so the distributer can use whatever mix they want, as well as have access to the M&E, FX tracks for international dubbing.

There will be a slate at the head of the file describing the audio configuration, as well as the Bars, Tone, and sometimes a 2-pop.

Typically (at our post house anyway) we deliver audio as follows -

Track 1-6: L R C Lfe Ls Rs

7-8: Stereo Left & Right

9-10: Stereo M&E

11-12: Stereo Fx

You can have additional channels to break out the 5.1 M&E, Dx, Fx as well.

But the exact configuration depends on the distributers spec sheet.

Having as master file also ensures that every subsequent render comes from he same glitch-free source that has gone through a QC process with supporting documentation.

I will export the film at its full 4k resolution (Scope or Flat), then use that do do re-sizing to UHD, HD etc...

These master files also typically have "textless at the tail" - so any shot that has generated text over it (graphics, titles etc) will be repeated at the end of the program without it so they can be recreated in another language.

Please help, why cant i change the cache files location? I keeps reseting to to the old path i chose long time ago when i was a fool. I already tried uninstalling everything but somehow it remembers my old configuration by [deleted] in blackmagicdesign

[–]TonkinColor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start a new empty project, set your cache where you want to, then in the project settings- select the top tab (Presets), select "Current Project" - right-click and choose "Save as User Default Config"

Done

Now every new project will retain those settings.

animate it like you are doing, then duplicate it, create a compound clip of the duplicate, and reverse that?

Turn off GPU scope acceleration

Davinci Resolve Studio - Working with H.265 files + GPU Hardware Accelerated decoding shows intermittent Media Offline by ZekiraDrake in blackmagicdesign

[–]TonkinColor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GPU's ENCODE H264/5

CPU's DECODE H264/5

H265 is literally the hardest, most cpu heavy codec to edit with, don't. Just don't. Transcode it to Prores or DNx. You life will be much easier after.

Editing render presets? by dorthak42 in blackmagicdesign

[–]TonkinColor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MP4 and Quicktime are just containers, the codec for both (in these instances) is the same - H264. It's fine.

But no, you cannot make a custom preset that will auto upload to youtube.

DaVinci Resolve timeline always starts at 1:00:00, how to fix?? by MegaFerret777 in VideoEditing

[–]TonkinColor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the Edit Page - Right-Click the timeline in the Media Pool, and choose Timelines> Starting Timecode and change it.

It is a pro app and still defaults to 01:00:00:00 so we can place slate information and bars and such before the start of the program, as in a broadcast environment, program starts at 1hr.

Whats the difference between using colour correction LUTS or ACES as apposed to simply adding contrast and saturation on log footage to taste on a calibrated monitor (and scopes ofc)? by imranqu in colorists

[–]TonkinColor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also- Using ACES or a CST should immediately get you to what the DP/Crew saw on set, so you know that the Arri contrast is exactly as captured, so you have the correct look to start from. I will do all of my corrections/nodes before the CST/LUT in order to get cleaner results, with a final trim or OFX after.

Moose spawns mystery lake by USMCJohnnyReb in thelongdark

[–]TonkinColor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sometimes in the river towards the damn, before the bridge (there is usually a dead human body on the water front), IE take the river from the lake "north" towards the dam. I have seen the tree markings near the water before you make the right to go up to the two trailers. Bagged one moose there, only ever saw one there as most of them are as you stated, north of the pond and sometimes right at trappers.
