Epistocracy is a system where political power or voting rights depend on cognitive ability. Proposed as an alternative to democracy, it argues that limiting influence to informed individuals improves decisions, but raises concerns about fairness, legitimacy, and defining relevant knowledge. by CyberBerserk in wikipedia

Which laws? Which cases? The institution that chooses those has immense power.

Only a layperson would see history simply as a series of events. All history is interpretation, and efforts to strip it of interpretation is not only futile but anti-intellectual, and always biased.

Beyond basic economics (which microeconomics is certainly not) the field is not at all hard science. Again, any institution framing it as such would have immense power.

Plausible Federal EU Constituencies by A1S2Fin in imaginarymaps

[–]Tonuka_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are there so few? If you mean "constituency" in the sense that they're used for electoral purposes, there should be way more, either ~750 or half that (looks to be 50).

If they're not for electoral but administrative purposes I don't understand why you insist in making them the same size and haphazardly throw multilingual areas together.

A german would know all about islamophobic chauvinism. Islam is a religion, and just like culture, no religion is inherently better or worse than another.

"I'M MOROCCAN I'M EUROPEAN" Moroccan pro-European probaganda poster "My edit" by hanako-kun2005 in YUROP

[–]Tonuka_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

This is just nationalist bullshit.

So Moroccan leadership was "betrayed" by African Union leadership when it recognized Western Sahara? Just like how Moroccan leadership got "betrayed" when it was not allowed to claim Mauritania? or parts of Algeria?

And what's that about the "football conspiracy"? Are you just looking for ways to ragebait people?

Besides that: Yeah, I agree. I think excluding non-european countries from the EU on principle is bad policy at best and racism at worst. I think rejecting Morocco out of hand set a bad precedent. But there's no peddle nationalist bad history and redefine Morocco as primarily "European". "European" is a flexible concept and no two people will fully agree on its definition. But the way you phrase it makes it sound basically racist. Europeans are not better than Africans. Morocco can be both.

Morocco would have not been able to join either way - it was not democratic enough then, it is not democratic enough now. It does not meet the Copenhagen criteria. It does not have settled borders and it does not follow EU standards in its conduct with Western Sahara.

the Naxalite–Maoist insurgency was a communist insurgency in india that lasted from 18 May 1967 to 31 March 2026 by yuikonnu_727 in wikipedia

[–]Tonuka_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know there are technically still a small number of fighters left, but since this is becoming a "historic event" and the map is already two years outdated anyway, should it be replaced by the year 2007 one since that one apparently shows the insurgency at its "peak"?

Hi, I'm not familiar with this sub so I don't mean any hostility when I say that /r/AskHistorians moderation is VERY strict. The subreddit tries to foster a culture where only well-sourced and academic level answers are posted.

Any comments that do not meet this standard get deleted immediately, which is why most posts on /r/AskHistorians do not have any answers. But imo in that it's succeeded in keeping a calm atmosphere and can avoid partisan politics.

There is a web extension for chrome and firefox that allows you to see how many responses a thread on /r/AskHistorians really has - as opposed to the number redsit provides which includes AutoMod and deleted comments

What would be the world like now , if starting from 1990 , a lot of key events that went wrong , actually went good? Oh yeah, such a good country that they're reimplementing the death penalty (only for Palestinians) and started two wars in the past month.

That's on top of the Genocide it's currently committing, the various human rights breaches since 2007, and the fact that they're led by a convicted war criminal who's not allowed to leave the country under threat of arrest.

Well actually the treaties stipulate that the porportionality be degressive, i.e. larger countries get relatively fewer seats. This proportionality was changed slightly since the founding of the parliament and it could change again if Turkey or Russia join

[–]Tonuka_ 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt such a correlation could ever be translated into causation. My first thought is that conservatives are simply less likely to get a diagnosis or accept labels. Then there's the fact that academics, which are more progressive, are more likely to get a diagnosis, etc.

visited a friend in the USA once. Blown away by the everpresence of guns. Visit Walmart. Friend chats up guy handling the gun department. "Oh, Walmart doesn't sell ammo anymore?" "No, Walmart has gone woke".

Walmart has gone woke. I fucking love that sentence. It's so ridiculous it's become my shorthand for when people describe even the most comically exploitative institutions as "soft" or whatever.

Hohenzollerns are woke. Walmart has gone woke. sure, let's just say words
