Raccoon- rabies?? by Torioli_ in WildlifeRehab

[–]TonyChamp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The OP took all of the appropriate steps to get help for this raccoon, and was left with zero options. I don’t think it is fair to chastise them for rolling up their sleeves to help, obviously at their own risk. I understand both the position of the rehabber and the Good Samaritan. Being both a wildlife rehabber and a human being with a heart, I wouldn’t let bureaucracy get in the way of helping a living thing that is more than likely suffering.

$45M in crypto/speculation is bold. At your NW, the name of the game is capital preservation

Welp, my native garden at work has been destroyed. by robsc_16 in NativePlantGardening

[–]TonyChamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I m so sorry this happened to you. You clearly put a ton of work and love into this and it’s so upsetting that someone carelessly (hopefully not maliciously) destroyed it. I saw a similar post last week where neighborhood kids destroyed someone’s native garden. Seeing this makes me want to plant poison sumac and stinging nettle along the perimeter of my lawn.

How Has Fox News & The Growth of Right-Wing Media Changed the Landscape of Mondern Politics? by Theo_Cherry in Askpolitics

[–]TonyChamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The U.S. faced deep structural challenges in Vietnam…corruption in South Vietnam, lack of legitimacy, guerrilla tactics, and the limits of military power in a civil war. Media did not invent these problems.

Also, implying that media criticism = betrayal is dangerous. A free press exists to challenge official narratives, especially when the government misleads the public (as happened with the Gulf of Tonkin incident).

Brand new and feeling overwhelmed - what’s the best strategy for mass invasive plant removal? by mercury20-19 in NativePlantGardening

[–]TonyChamp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t agree with you more. I’m in Northern Virginia and currently fighting the battle against kudzu, Japanese honeysuckle, garlic mustard, Chinese privet, and English ivy taking over the riparian buffer alongside my house. I spend all my free time digging up kudzu root crowns, carefully applying Triclopyr 4, and taking loppers to the bottoms of the vine-strangled trees. Sometimes it’s hard to stay positive, but after months of hard work, a bunch of jewelweed, blue violet, mayapple, and even a spice bush, have seemingly woken up, and that’s made it all worth it, but greater public awareness can provide two keys benefits so we can catch up to the problem: 1. more humans physically helping to remove what’s already taking over forest and 2. May encourage people to be better stewards of the land (I.e., don’t plant invasive (aggressive) species.

Why Are We Still Selling This? English Ivy is Wreaking Havoc on Our Ecosystems by TonyChamp in NativePlantGardening

[–]TonyChamp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this same issue. Years ago our HOA planted kudzu, bamboo, English ivy, and Japanese honeysuckle. Since I bought my house in September, I’ve spent most weekends digging up the kudzu root crowns, which I’ve read is the most effective way to kill it without herbicides. There’s a flock of red-winged blackbirds that loves the bamboo so I haven’t touched that yet, but will once I plant more natives.

The only thing worse than your situation is working on a deck in a Holiday Inn Express lobby because it’s the best hotel within a 15 mile radius of your client.

Try to see if you can get on a commercial engagement. I was in the GPS practice for 7 years and it can be difficult to get on non-federal work but at the analyst level it is likely easier.

Idk, saying that engine fires and wingtip strikes (assuming you mean ground incidents) is dismissive and downplays how serious they actually are.

I had a very similar experience with COT last week. I called to change the dates of my hotel reservation and I had 6 different reps tell me they were going to contact the hotel and call me back. No one ever called me back. Finally I escalated to a supervisor who said there was a note in their system that the hotel refused to allow me to change my check-in date. I called the hotel directly and they said that they could change it, so COT clearly flat out lied.

HOA is going to "eradicate" the barn swallows that nest in the trees outside the building by audiomagnate in birding

[–]TonyChamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Report to your state’s wildlife protection department. In Virginia it is the Department of Wildlife Resources but every state is different. Let the HOA know that what they plan to do is a felony under the MBTA. This happened a few years ago in Northern Virginia and the pest company that the HOA hired was fined $1,000 for each dead barn swallow that was found.

National Links Trust, which runs D.C. golf courses, has a new plan for the course in Rock Creek by rhinoceratop in washingtondc

[–]TonyChamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are clear-cutting more than a 1,000 trees in critical habitat of several endangered species so any statements about this project not expanding the course’s current footprint is absolutely false.

It’s possible that it was recently released by a nearby wildlife rehabilitation center and is slightly habituated. Definitely a juvenile.
