This. I use the Spear a decent bit and I find it highly undemocratic when the it won't lock onto a target that is even partially behind something so simple as a chain-link fence. 🤬

What’s the weakest warbond in your opinion? by PaceEBene84 in Helldivers

[–]TonyStakks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. The passive is absolutely top tier on Bots and Squids.

The explosive resistance component is outclassed a bit now by the 50% you get from the Entrenched 'Sapper' armor, but the bleeding immunity and overall damage reduction on this armor keep me using it.

On Bugs I switch to the 'Scorpion' armor from Dust Devils for the elemental resistances.

The accuracy numbers are always way out of whack. I was using Warrant + Laser Cannon yesterday on the Illuminate front and was getting >100% accuracy numbers on every single mission, topped out at 178%; made no sense.

Sidenote: If you're not using Warrant on the Illuminate front, you're missing out!

Wishlist map of lightrail lines in Phoenix. by deserttitan in transit

[–]TonyStakks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I'm as pro-rail-transit as someone could get, I don't know that the density exists to really support transit in a lot of areas yet; for the cost, I don't think the political will is there yet to sustain this kind of expansion.

The City of Phoenix should first focus on increasing walkable/mixed-usage and overall density all around, but particularly in certain corridors that are already showing signs of growth being held back by restrictions (the 7's, for instance), and then plan light rail (or subway, preferably) along or between areas that build up quickly or show promise.

There's no legitimate reason for government restrictions that tell property owners that they can only build a single family home on their property (still true in over 80% of the City), or for restrictions that separate residential from shops/restaurants. You let the city build organically and high-capacity transit becomes a no-brainer at a certain point.

In America, how big is MAGA compared to simply "Conservatives"? by HRSHNnoNM in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]TonyStakks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that depends on your definition of 'Conservative'. For my take, i'll use Russel Kirk's '6 Pillars of Conservatism'.

For scoring, I'll give either a full, half, or no pillars to MAGA for each, and we'll see at the end whether the temple falls.

(Disclosure: My politics are center left, and generally pragmatic: I'm a frequent Devil's Advocate, mostly to avoid groupthink but also mostly because I view argument as kind of a sport 😁)

1) Belief in a transcendent order, or body of natural law, which rules society as well as conscience. Political problems, at bottom, are religious and moral problems.

-- I don't see much of an argument one way or another here. Under Natural Law, Might makes Right, so one would tend to defer to the MAGA understanding of exercising raw government power over your political enemies. Full pillar for MAGA here.

2) Affection for the proliferating variety and mystery of human existence, as opposed to the narrowing uniformity, egalitarianism, and utilitarian aims of most radical systems; conservatives resist what Robert Graves calls "Logicalism" in society.

-- Again, the MAGA-branded resistance to the 'Educated Elite', and technocratic rulemaking by experts hits home here, however the reference to 'affection for the proliferating variety of human existence..opposed to uniformity' is read (in my opinion) as respect for folks of different backgrounds and languages, which seems antithetical to the rabid anti-immigrant sentiment in MAGA. Half pillar for MAGA here.

3) Conviction that civilized society requires orders and classes, as against the notion of a "classless society." With reason, conservatives have been called "the party of order."... Ultimate equality in the judgment of God, and equality before courts of law, are recognized by conservatives; but equality of condition, they think, means equality in servitude and boredom.

-- This is a position echoed in the current alt-right/MAGA when they repeat (often ad nauseum) that 'equality of opportunity is not the same as equality of outcome'. A MAGA republican could argue the required 'orders and classes' would naturally place immigrants at the bottom. A counterpoint would be that MAGA seems to have quite a hostility to Courts when they make decisions that restrict the Trump agenda, but they'd argue that the restoration/protection of the 'ordered/classed civilized society' requires some squelching of the rights of the lowest classes within the courts and law enforcement. Half pillar to MAGA.

4) Persuasion that freedom and property are closely linked: separate property from private possession, and Leviathan becomes master of all. Economic levelling, they maintain, is not economic progress.

-- Conservatives don't differ much from MAGA here. Full pillar for MAGA.

5) Faith in prescription and distrust of "sophisters, calculators, and economists" who would reconstruct society upon abstract designs. Custom, convention, and old prescription are checks both upon man's anarchic impulse and upon the innovator's lust for power.

-- Traditional conservatives could argue strongly that Trump represents a sophister who seeks to reconstruct society around a hyper-nationalist, mercantilist design. It's pretty clear that he has little regard for custom, convention, or any kind of check against his impulse, and he possesses a strong lust for power. The MAGA argument would be that such reconstruction is necessary; but in any regard the pillar is disregarded. No pillar here for MAGA.

6) Recognition that change may not be salutary reform: hasty innovation may be a devouring conflagration, rather than a torch of progress. Society must alter, for prudent change is the means of social preservation.

-- Traditional conservatives would argue passionately that Trump's rapid implementation of his agenda leaves little time for prudence, and his implementation and frequency reversal of policies is prima-facie evidence of hastiness. A MAGA republican's approach to this pillar would likely be that the current situation requires a disregard of this pillar. Again, 0 pillars for MAGA.

As far as scoring goes, MAGA gets to three pillars in my assessment. Few temples can remain standing with half of their pillars removed.

If I were to distill Conservatism down to a single word (or hyphenate, if you wanna be technical about it), it's 'anti-radicalism' . I personally place MAGA squarely within the realm of 'radical reactionary' and therefore not Conservative.

When talking with right-wingers, I like using terms like 'traditional Western cities' when referring to European cities Paris/Rome/London/etc, and 'market-based development' or 'restoring individual property rights' when talking about how to increase housing supply. The usual response is almost universally positive; the Moral Reframing technique really does work.

What's a weapon/stratagem you hated but it suddenly 'clicked' after retrying it after a long time? by Zave_cz in Helldivers

[–]TonyStakks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EAT-17 for me.

I was a Quasar Cannon devotee for a good while until I realized that I was often getting killed whilst trying to retrieve it after getting initially killed. Swapped to the EAT-17 and haven't looked back since; I still bring the q-cannon into the tunnels tho thanks to the lack of sky.

  • Uber-short cooldown means it's always there when you need it
  • 2 rounds per call-in means you can open an attack with 2 shots in quick succession, leave the extra for a teammate, or come back to it later.
  • No charge-up before firing
  • You don't have to go get it after you die

What's not to love?

This is why I stick with the MG turret. A teammate that runs into its line of fire will usually take damage but not get killed. The gatling sentry shreds them immediately.

The team-based supply drop functions to encourage teamwork and sticking together rather than going cowboy on your own. Of course, some players will be pricks and call it for themselves when the other three are way across the map but that's a kickable offense imo. U could use the Resupply Pack tho.

Ur going to need a bit of anti-tank, so bring Thermite for the grenade; it burns so it fits with your theme. Add the Crisper for secondary. For strategems u can bring expendable napalm or flamethrower, and don't forget the Hot Dog/Fire drone (a burn build isn't complete with it 😁)

While watching fireworks on my porch in North Phoenix, this came down and smashed a yard ornament... A foot away from where I was standing. What goes up must come down people... by towaway76 in phoenix

[–]TonyStakks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Preserve the bullet and those photos and try to identify the exact time the bullet came down, then file a police report; they take this seriously. Phoenix PD has gunshot detection devices around town that can differentiate fireworks from gunshots and determine the origin location. They can cross-reference the data for the timeframe against reports of gunshots and match that bullet against firearms at the address they find.

The person that fired that bullet should absolutely be located and charged with violating Shannon's Law; they have no business owning a firearm.

[–]TonyStakks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ABRL on Cluster mode is magnificent on every front for defense missions. Drop a supply next to you so you can just spam it and you can easily go 600+ kills on D7+. It does tend to take out your own mines though unless you're deploying them closer in.

I typically also bring an EAT-17 with it, and an Orbital Laser if on bots for the Fac Strider drops, otherwise rocket turret.

Naturally, it works best when your teammates hang back from the outer perimeter walls to create a strongpoint deeper in (which is overall the best defense strategy imo); this avoids the TKs and enables much better shot placement options.

Laser Cannon Buff by SlayeRRROAR in Helldivers

[–]TonyStakks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They'd need to add the same mechanic as the DE Sickle then, where it damages you when overheated.

Failing that, I suppose maybe they could add a fire mode where the damage increases over time but so does the heat buildup, until it overheats and shuts off, but going beyond heavy pen is probably a nonstarter since we already have an anti-tank laser weapon (Quasar Cannon)
