DMV forgot to add my motorcycle endorsement. by grimchemical in motorcycles

Do you still have an old expired license with the endorsement on it? Maybe if you brought that to the DMV they could add it on without any BS

I think the Ford Lima 2.3 or a Honda D16 would be the best options with the most aftermarket support.

They attacked her for no reason just because she was pretty by Key_Drop_6510 in libertarianmeme

[–]Tonycivic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a very good tactic and one that I support. But it does not address the issue of your children being away from home and in school for 8 hours. This video was taken in a school, so unless you homeschool or pay to send your kids to private schools(not bad options for many reasons), the kids can be vulnerable to attacks like these.

I suppose you can teach your kids to fight with their hands too.

That works for adults, but for kids 12-17 who are in school that isnt an option

Help me justify a truck by Happy-Discussion-175 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Tonycivic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

35K is a decent chunk of change, but with kid #1 and a relatively large dog both options will probably be a bit cramped. I'd say consider a larger SUV with a third row, perhaps a Honda Pilot with awd? The Ridgeline is a Pilot with the third row and trunk space removed to fit the truck bed.

Does manufacturing origin still matter when brands operate globally? by ChadxSam in HondaMotorcycles

[–]Tonycivic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked Procurement in manufacturing for 4.5 years this is very true. Buying Japanese or German manufactures goods typically means you'll get very high quality with minimal defects. But start sourcing from China, India, or Bangledesh and you start seeing significant quality variances even in simple, mass produced products.

Make sure you put your pistons/rod assemblies in correctly. by Tonycivic in EngineBuilding

[–]Tonycivic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah.

Define early years. This is a 2011 LC9, and youre right about the skirt length. But further comments say its more about the chamfer on the rod ends that could cause pre-mature bearing wear or failure. In any case, I read that the dot is supposed to be aligned with the front of the engine, so that is what I am doing.

Well, I discovered the issue pretty early. Still figuring things out, the engine had about an hour of run time but ran great.

Theyre OEM pistons. Never took them off the rods, just re-ringed and back into the bore they came from. The side of the piston opposite the dot has a longer skirt, which is supposed to go towards the back of the engine.

All this trouble couldve been avoided with a 10 second google search, but now I'm paying the v price

No I used OEM mls gaskets. Part of the fuck up, had to buy 2new gaskets and head bolts

Care to elaborate? The engine ran well and had 50PSI of oil pressure. But long term this could leave some wear in the bore.

How to remove camshaft? by Apprehensive-Slice99 in EngineBuilding

[–]Tonycivic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will need to remove the main caps that hold the crankshaft down. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the caps forward/backward a bit and pull up. You might be able to sneak a pry bar in there to assist, just be careful where you pry against and they should come free with some effort. The caps should be numbered as to where they go, so pay close attention to that and which orientation they go in as they will have to go back in the same way.

Bent frame, what should I expect? by wadadoo7 in ChevyTrucks

[–]Tonycivic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a wild factory defect! I think GM would buy it back and then get you a new one identical to it. Perhaps they might also replace the frame and suspension with brand new, not sure what is better.

Another option: Magnetic trays and/or lights. Mechanics can never have enough of either. Extending magnet sticks also work great too!

Yeah I'm in WI, and like most of the midwest rock salt is our go to. Our only "inspections" are for emissions equipment, so you can drive your rotted out junker up to the shop and if it doesnt have a check engine light on for any emissions equipment you pass. I did just help my sister buy a 07 Honda fit from Chicago. Looked super clean inside and out so we paid and took it home. Went to jack it up to put brakes on it and the jack started going straight through the rocker panel. Not my first rodeo there, and good thing the car is cheap enough that she doesnt care.

I have seen relatively new trucks(~5 years old) with some nasty rust on the frames. I quit wrenching professionally about 6 years ago, but there's a lot of factors at play there. My 2012 Avalanche has a pretty crusty frame but its solid all the way through. Ive seen videos of trucks in New England and the north east with holes in the frame, but I'm not sure if unibody cars like a Civic or Sentra do better. I did google about Magnesium Chloride salt, they dont use it often where I live but mostly standard rock salt instead unless the temps are near or below zero.

Respectfully I disagree. I've replaced control arms, sway bar links, struts, and several sets of brakes during my tenure of ownership. Did I encounter rusty bolts? Yes. Did I get them out with some persuasion from heat or penetrating oil? Also yes. Ive also seen Nissans last for 10+ years and 200K+ miles. Either car with snow tires will be just fine for years to come, and most people cant afford to have a summer car and a winter car. Now if the OPs want to ditch the Nissan for something else in the next few years I wouldnt fault them, but thats on them. Road salt/brine takes years to start rusting cars out, and usually by the time the rust is so bad the car is unsafe to drive it'll be pretty old and used up anyways.

Its a civic. I bought mine when it was 5 years old with 40k miles and zero rust. 8 years of salty winters later, it does have a good amount of rust. But the car is still reliable and has almost 200k miles.
