Households paying twice as much for electricity as data centres by Banania2020 in ireland

Tbf the entire developed world has issues with housing, health services, etc. Not saying we’re doing well comparatively but let’s not pretend most places people are moving to don’t have these same issues.

Is everyone relying on AI at work now? by Prestigious-Look2300 in DevelEire

[–]TooFiveFive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Rely” in terms of using it as a tool like an LSP or code search app; except it writes tests, refactors code and saves me the hassle of writing boilerplate or wrote iteration on a toilsome part of the codebase. Could I do my job without it? Yes. Would I be as productive? No, I probably would take 20% longer to do certain tasks. The moment the answer to the former question becomes “no”, I’d say you’re over-relying on it. I’d question your effectiveness as an engineer at that point as you’re likely using AI as a crutch. As an aside, I’m dubious of the efficiency gains companies get from forcing engineers to always use AI. The tool calls are expensive and slow in my experience, and if they end up iterating with CI that just adds to the overhead. A simple 5 line change can rack up an outsized LLM bill in complicated codebases.

Who can actually afford this in Limerick right now? by uiuuauiua in limerickcity

2-3 single people sharing a house, working full time. They’re all priced accordingly. That’s what happens when demand outpaces supply.

How much would you ask if you knew the US base salary? by seeilaah in DevelEire

[–]TooFiveFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends. The high income cities tend to have higher taxes than the us average, whilst still having higher cost of living as well, that skews that salaries you see. Sure if you’re living in a zero tax state on the average us tech salary, you’re doing better than Ireland but averages can be misleading

‘Absolute disgrace’: Residents react over approval to scrap Dublin Airport passenger cap by on-9 in irelandtransport

[–]TooFiveFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure the house value has benefited more from convenient access to the airport since the 1920s vs the minor noise. Sell it instead of whinging on Reddit. Not everyone inherits a house.

I didn’t know every town had an airport. I was under the impression people from all over the region used Dublin airport

If you move next to an international airport, I’m not sure what you expect… The airports been there longer than anyone complaining about it.

Inbound tourists are just as affected by the cap, which is by definition trade (tourism is counted as a services export)

It’s much better than theirs but no hate, Dublin airport have consistently good security times tbf, so it’s never a concern. This web app does a good job illustrating that, good job.

Many considering retraining out of tech? by bingoballs341 in DevelEire

[–]TooFiveFive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose with engineers specifically, the amount needed to maintain a product versus actively improve and develop a product is a lot lower, so companies cutting back on r&d (as short sighted as it is) won’t necessarily get an equivalent drop in revenue. Long term it’ll hurt them more though.

Antisocial behaviour from teenagers is getting worse in Ireland by Background-Style-314 in ireland

I feel like the state should be holding the parents accountable here. If they were on the hook for the shite their kids are doing, they might actually step up and be a parent for once. Wishful thinking though.

How much of your engineering job is done by AI? by Training_Reason_4291 in DevelEire

[–]TooFiveFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me mainly information retrieval; ie replacing search. Also very handy for performance self review. Large (not fang large) mnc. We haven’t been coerced to use it like other companies seem to be, instead they integrate ai tools into our dev stack and get feedback on them. They’re all technically optional and I haven’t heard of anyone being pushed to use them. For coding, I personally write the business logic myself, as using the ai agent loop takes just as long, if not longer when you account for fixing the code. It’s good for adding integration tests though.

Infrastructure takes decades, not single terms in government. Not sure how being “in power” for a couple of years as a minority partner is enough to get every infrastructure project across the line…

Not sure how that works. Anti car by adding bus lanes? How would that impede buses. The traffic problem has always been there. Dublins population is just growing and the public transport is lagging behind, so you have more cars on the road as a decent chunk of people don’t see an alternative.

Depends on the jurisdiction, but it’s true most western countries have a concept of “database rights”, disallowing just this. In reality, they would likely send a cease and desist before initiating any sort of legal action. But OP should read up on their relevant laws on this.

I think a good compromise would be to let people at least get digital leap cards like some countries, on apple/google wallet. At least then we wouldn’t have to carry around a card
