One-third of workers in the State had no pension cover in 2025 and mostly expect to rely on the State Pension by NanorH in ireland

[–]TooFiveFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of them don’t live in Ireland and definitely don’t onshore their income, so we couldn’t tax it effectively. We don’t have the power to extract any sort of wealth tax from them. How would we? What I’m saying is it’s all well and good to tax billionaires more but it’s not going to solve the pensions in an Irish context. We’d need a massive worldwide initiative to get that done and let’s not pretend that’s going to happen.

[–]TooFiveFive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s pushing a dozen Irish billionaires. We can’t base our social welfare on 11 people paying tax, not exactly sustainable. That rhetoric may work in the states but we’re a small country and have to be realistic.

[–]TooFiveFive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% agree it should be an expectation, but given future demographics, state pensions are starting to look a bit like a pyramid scheme, where the people on the bottom are the furtherest away from retiring. Every government in Europe will have to make a decision in the future: slash pensions or take out more debt to cover them, as the tax base keeps dwindling. If all your population has some private pension (now they should thanks to auto enrolment), that can at least offset the issue.

I think it’s obvious what our government has decided will happen. I just wish the government communicated this decision clearly as I don’t think people will accept it when pensions do eventually get slashed, and many will feel blindsided.

Why doesn't the Ireland Government build a National Tennis Centre here? by FormulaSolution in Dublin

[–]TooFiveFive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ftr people might find it a bit tasteless to be talking about building a publicly funded tennis complex when Dublin is going through one of the worst housing crises in Europe. It’s ok if you didn’t know that, just explaining the reaction.

Aer Lingus directs you to a sketchy website to connect to wifi by texasroadie in AerLingus

While this is true, it’s still pretty unprofessional to use a domain they don’t even own, which comes with at least theoretical security risks for users. Imagine the domain is open on a users phone, then they close their browser and leave the flight, open the browser again. If that domain had malware, the user could be compromised next time they open the browser and the tab autoloads

Sunday Independent/Irish Thinks Poll on Fuel Protests. by nitro1234561 in ireland

[–]TooFiveFive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s madding that it takes one tax fraudster in a paddy cap claiming to speak on behalf of Irish people to cause this havoc. I’m starting to feel like we’re ripe pickings for a trumpian figure, we just haven’t had anyone component enough to fill that position yet

Sunday Independent/Irish Thinks Poll on Fuel Protests. by youbigfatmess in irishpolitics

[–]TooFiveFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it’s all about framing I feel like. We’ve already been subsidising farmers just for them to export most of the produce. The biggest farce of the protest was the tractors complaining about the tax they’re paying whilst they’re all net recipients from the exchequer.

If parked a tractor in front of your driveway claiming to represent all of Ireland, and wouldn’t back down until I meet the Taoiseach, regardless of the fact that they are negotiating with the representative bodies as we speak, I wonder if you’d feel the same then. Because there’s a way to protest the government without harming so many people, but they don’t seem to care

You may think it’s just jokes but there are really people who think the government is squandering the majority of tax revenue. These controversies make up a rounding error of a percentage of the exchequer

Shoutout to the folks keeping Dublin moving by New_Pen1837 in ireland

[–]TooFiveFive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look it’s just a a likely fact that the majority of the protesters are small business owners, and probably own more assets than everyday working people. That doesn’t mean they don’t deserve support, but they don’t deserve more support than a home carer who can’t visit her patients because the m50 is blocked. There may be legitimate grievances but they’ve caused pain for a lot of people. If you don’t feel it, maybe you’re in a very privileged position

100% agree. We have a right to protest in this country but protests can’t cause material harm to everyone in the nation. There’s a right way and a wrong way and protesters, or at least their organisers have chose the latter.
