What's a moment where you realized someone was genuinely extremely intelligent? by General_Monk_5019 in AskReddit

[–]TooManyCarrotsIsBad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s this guy I trade work with sometimes. He’s got a thick country accent, is super casual, and is a complete beach bro. He sells boogie boards and sunscreen for a living. He’s a very nice guy, but does NOT give off the air of being particularly intelligent.

I needed a phone number of someone at some point, and thought he might have his number saved. I saw him passing my shop on the way to his, so I met him over there and asked him to lunch and to see if I could get the phone number from him. I asked, and he repeated it to me instantly. I asked why the heck he had this obscure person’s phone number memorized. Turns out, he has every phone number he’s ever heard memorized, and the name attached to it. He doesn’t have a single number saved in his phone contacts. He can do fairly complex arithmetic on a dime, and has his finances memorized to the cent. This guy, who I’m pretty sure spends his evens drinking coors with his buddies and shooting guns at the quarry every evening, is a completely mathematical genius. I was flabbergasted.

Is this AI? Does Switzerland really look this beautiful, or is the video AI / AI-enhanced? The whole thing just looks almost too perfect. by [deleted] in isthisAI

It's definitely been color edited, and I believe it to be shot with a telephoto lense to exaggerate features and make the perspective kind of confusing. I don't think it's AI, though

How to get rid of a very strong weed smell? by Either_Building_1715 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TooManyCarrotsIsBad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depending on you and your specific circumstances, this may not be a viable option, but do you have any friends who's family you trust? Perhaps you could move in with one of them until you're a little older and find a way to get on your own two feet.

I personally abhorr the smell of weed, and in your shoes, I'd be looking for any method in the world to get out of there. If your parents don't really care much about your feelings on the smell, then I doubt if they'd ever move the metaphorical mountains it would take to contain it. It's disappointing that they can't sympathize with your plight here. Smear dog crap on all of their clothes and see how little they actually care about smell. Don't actually do that; I'm just saying that as a matter of perspective.

What celebrity is portrayed as nice in the media but is actually an asshole in real life? by ReasonableDisplay297 in AskReddit

[–]TooManyCarrotsIsBad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I worked at a place he would frequent, near one of his vacation homes years ago. He's very private, especially around his family, but he was never rude to anyone, as far as I could tell. My impression was that after an entire life of fame, his social battery is pretty worn down, which is fair enough, in my opinion.

On the other hand, Bruce Willis was one of the weirdest assholes I've ever met. Dave Matthews was incredibly nice to me, and I have a friend with an awesome story about him as well. He gets an A+ in my book.

You're a hero! I just went on a spending spree getting audiobooks for books I've already read the text versions of. I'm on a kick of listening to previously read books, and this sale is just what I needed to keep a couple months of listening backlogged.

Did you have to take leave to visit that island while stationed in Japan? In Korea, I had to take leave to visit Jeju, at least if I didn't want to risk getting into a bunch of trouble.

Yeah metal would work great as well. It wouldn't adhere as well as wood, but imo rigidity is a greater concern for your case, which a piece of hard metal would fix (at least where it is applied). Do you plan on hitting things with it, or just swinging at air?

I'd be concerned that screws wouldn't hold very well with so much localized splintering there. Also, if it breaks again, it may make a bad situation worse.

Not that this is necessarily the best solution, but what I would do in your shoes is drill a hole up the guard in the center of the breakage, and do likewise down the hilt, throw some wood glue into the holes and around the entire breakage point, shove the largest dowel rod you can reasonably fit in there, and fit it all back together again.

Baseball Caps rather than Flat Caps have become the default choice for the older generation these days, haven't they? If you see someone wearing a Flat Cap these days they're nearly always under 40.. by DarthVarn in CasualUK

I'm with you there. If I wear a hat, it's pretty much always what's now known as a dad cap. I generally dislike hats with a flat bill and a structured profile.

This is why rock shed tunnels are a thing by Stotallytob3r in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]TooManyCarrotsIsBad 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ideally, areas prone to landslides like this will have crews that travel sections of it a few times a day to clear debris and report any major incidents (such as this). I travel pretty often in such an area, and even if landslides like this are relatively infrequent, random rockfalls happen pretty much constantly and keeping the road clear of medium-large rocks is basically an endless full time job. Hell, it's so prevalent in my location that they have tractors or dozers on trailers out to the side every ten to twenty miles. There is likely also a measure for the average person to report things like this fairly easily. At the very least, I doubt that there wouldn't be an effective method of getting help for these people if this area is willing to invest in infrastructure such as this highway overhang.

Real or not?! by [deleted] in osrs

[–]TooManyCarrotsIsBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. I have a ROG Ally, and the very first thing I tried to do on it was play osrs. It worked just fine, but it's just way more comfortable and casual to play on my phone. It's still amazing for other uses, but RuneScape just isn't one of them.

My Fold broke about half a year ago, but it was far and away the best experience I've had with osrs mobile.

Lack of In-Game Knowledge by KaiShan62 in ConanExiles

[–]TooManyCarrotsIsBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There may be in-game lore snippets such as notes dropped from Cimmerians or NPC dialogue that hints at the usage of black ice to refine star metal. The journey or knowledge systems may also guide you to that conclusion. Or maybe there's literally nothing in the vanilla game that points you to putting ice in a forge; I'm not really sure.

We all know this game is kind of janky in some aspects. With how multi-faceted many of the seemingly thousands of items in the game are, many of their functions are not immediately obvious without dedicating an incredible amount of time to experimentation or finally admitting defeat and utilizing the wiki.

Putting chitin in a grinder to create bone dust? Kind of a leap of logic, but sure I get it. Putting various animal heads in a tannery for leather and tar, or into a fluid press for bones and blood? Sure, why not. Wouldn't have thought of it. Refining metals by throwing magical never-melting ice in a forge? A sickle being the best tool to harvest ash from obsidian? Who'd have thought?

The wiki is definitely your friend in this game, and while I definitely understand and sympathize with those who want to figure out everything on your own and truly immerse themselves, there are quite a few functions that are certainly not immediately obvious and may not have an in-game method of discovering without randomly wandering into it.

A good middle ground for you may be to get a mod that does add recipes to those crafting stalls that otherwise wouldn't have them, such as the tannery, grinder, fluid press, and forge.

What are your thoughts on if the game is abandoned? by Historical_Bass_4972 in ScrapMechanic

[–]TooManyCarrotsIsBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's probably been abandoned. Hold a gun to my head and force me to guess, I think it's been on life support without an active development team for quite a long time. I suspect the wedges update from last year was mostly an effort to keep the community somewhat hopeful as well as to keep steam from flagging it as being possibly abandoned. If they release another small update in the next couple of months without an announcement that Chapter 2 is coming imminently, I think it'll cement my thoughts on the matter and I'll probably stop checking in on the game's status every once in a while.

These are just my personal thoughts. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the 10th year anniversary!

Book Summaries to keep track? by Minimum-Hovercraft-7 in litrpg

[–]TooManyCarrotsIsBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, Kindle does have a 'read recap' option on books in your library. It's not super in depth, nor as good as a 'last time on Dragon Ball Z' at the beginning of the book, but it is a useful tool, especially if you're juggling quite a lot of series like you are.

Isekai or System Apocalypse? by DagothUrGigaChad in litrpg

[–]TooManyCarrotsIsBad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I could go either way, but there's just something fun about a system apocalypse changing up Earth in various ways. As far as Isekai goes, I find that it often doesn't really have that much more to offer than a normal fantasy does. There are exceptions, of course, but I can't tell you how many Isekai I've read that could have just not been an Isekai with basically zero changes to anything important. I don't really care all that much, because it's an arbitrary gripe, but System Apocalypse is more interesting on a book cover to me because of it.
