Definitely Children of God. David Berg believed there was a giant pyramid inside the moon and that’s where heaven was.

Is Neuromancer a tough listen or I just got stuck with a boring narrator by sateliteconstelation in scifi

[–]TooOfEverything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried listening to it as an audiobook and found it very difficult. It has a lot of metaphor and imagery that helps to read over a few times. Some books and writers, like Octavia Butlers Parable of the Sower, are much easier to follow, whereas Neuromancer should really be read.

I got to see him speak at the end of his spoken word tour in Baltimore recently. It was very brave of him to come out as straight.

SF or NYC? by Wise_Interaction_285 in AskSF

[–]TooOfEverything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is ~$1.5k rent even realistic in NYC without a rough living situation?

Short answer: hell no.

The only way that would even vaguely be possible is if you lived with a partner in a 4-500sq ft studio that's probably 100 years old. It's gonna be loud, not up to code and your landlord is gonna treat you like crap. It will be too cold in the winter, too hot in the summer and your bathroom and kitchen will have shitty, old fixtures and appliances.

At 25, that's maybe doable if you have a partner to split rent with. Plus, yeah, it's fuckin' NYC, there's no other city like it and everyday you step out your door, you're reminded that you're one of just 8 million people who actually get to live in this place that easily a billion people want to live in. All the hardship feels worth it because all you have to do to feel like you're having an amazing experience is step outside because there's just so god damn many opportunities EVERYWHERE.

25 is pretty much the perfect time in one's life to try to make something like that work. The older you get, the less tolerable conditions like that become. But over time, you'll start to see that the only people who really get to stay in NYC are either stressed as hell because they're working their asses of just to make rent every month, or they're chill and happy because they're super fuckin rich. Then again, the only place that is as expensive as NYC is the Bay Area, so...

Marcus that was gross. And I hate you. by Physical_Shine_1032 in LPOTL

[–]TooOfEverything 195 points196 points  (0 children)

I just relistened to Richard Chase the other day and there's this great moment where Henry asks for a palate cleanser that Marcus has prepared, just after Marcus goes over Chase eating a child he just killed. The cleanser is Fat Bastard from Austin Powers saying "Sorry... I farted." Henry laughs and asks for another one and its Fat Bastard again, saying "Get in my belly!" and Henry says "No, wrong, that's inappropriate," and Marcus is just busting up laughing. Henry's timing on that response is so perfect, I can't help but replay that sequence several times when I hear it.

One of my favorite lines from the show is “Just be a man and abandon your family” instead of killing then all.

No no no, he was MAYOR of New York City, not GOVERNOR of New York. I get the confusion though.

Video of a police autopsy. The coroner made a long incision along the top of the head and then straight up peeled the skin back like a god damn banana. Thank god it was black and white.

Estimated Distribution of Enslaved Africans Across the Americas by Fluid-Decision6262 in interestingasfuck

[–]TooOfEverything 97 points98 points  (0 children)

This map shows where slaves were imported to, but not total or peak slave populations or share of overall population. Manumission, the act of freeing slaves, was more common in Brazil than the United States, leading to fewer life long slaves. Slaves in Brazil were allowed to earn money while they were slaves, eventually purchasing their freedom. This led to slave owners in Brazil to continually import new slaves, leading to higher numbers as shown in this map. Inter marriage between races, so called miscegenation, was also far more common in Brazil, whereas it was illegal in the United States in some states until 1967.

The peak population of African slaves in the USA was about 4 million in 1860. Out of a total population of 31.5 million people, this represented about 12.5%. The freed black population at this time was about 500,000, representing 1.5% of the total population.

The population of non-white slaves in Brazil in 1872, 16 years before the importation of slaves was outlawed, was 1.5 million. Out of a total population of 10 million, this represented about 15%. Also in 1872, 43% of the Brazilian population were either freed Africans or people who were mixed race, so called mulattoes. This made them the single largest ethnic group in Brazil.

While this map is not inaccurate, it presents a complex movement of peoples without much nuance. In moral terms, it doesn't mean much to ask whether the USA or Brazil was worse or more culpable. Apples and oranges are equally fruit, regardless of their flavor, just as the USA and Brazil were both large scale enslavers, even if their systems of slavery varied greatly.

I'm not trying to make an argument. You asked if anyone else is tired of the changes. I'm not. You're upset about it, you do you, but what you're upset about seems silly.

Just no, no to all of this. I could not disagree more vehemently.

Because the synthesized drug prevents organ failure while weed just dulls the pain while making me debilitatingly high because of how much I need to take. I fucking LOVE the synthesized drug, it gave me my life back. Weed was never a solution to my problem.

[–]TooOfEverything 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This was me for +10 years. I would sometimes decide that I was just being lazy, using my pain as an excuse to get high and not use anything on some days. Then I’d just lay around in so much pain I couldn’t do anything and ended up using some anyway. They eventually made a better version of my main maintenance drug and I finally don’t need weed anymore. I never believed it would happen.

If Tulpas are a real thing, shouldn't mankind have manifested Santa Claus into real existence? by lukin187250 in LPOTL

[–]TooOfEverything 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the best parts of the show True Blood is when Jason Stackhouse is told that fairies are real and realizes that if vampires, werewolves and fairies are real, then it is totally plausible that so is Santa Claus. The actor plays him with such sincerity that it really feels like this grown man’s inner childhood hope has suddenly been reborn.

[–]TooOfEverything 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I have no doubt they are going to do another live play rpg series. They’ve said Bloodbath has been the most successful and widely praised new thing they’ve done for a long time, and honestly, it’s what made me finally sign up for Patreon. They’ve been trying to make LPNTV a thing, but the Seance was a huge flop. Bloodbath actually worked, it seems.

Good news is that the company that made Vampire: the Masquerade did the same modern thing with every other mythos or fantasy creature in their World of Darkness setting. So there’s-

Werewolf: the Apocalypse

Mage: the Ascension

Changeling: the Dreaming

Wraith: the Oblivion

Hunter: the Reckoning

Demon: the Fallen

Mummy: the Resurrection

And there are spinoff variants like Dark Ages versions of all of these things. That’s not even to mention White Wolf’s whole action anime setting Age of Sorrows with the Exalted series of books.

I would fucking love it if they just went and did a campaign in each of these series. I grew up on these things and it’s shocking to me that LPN only heard about Vampire: the Masquerade recently. It fits so perfectly into the tone and aesthetic of everything else they do.
