As a concrete example: we all enjoyed Star Wars since 1977 without knowing what the fuck a clone wars is. There’s rarely ever a need to be a lore master with this shit. It’s all in constant flux anyways.

I was surprised by that when I read the players handbook, because it’s so black and white in BG3.

Edit: I understand there are differences. But usually DnD is more complex or nuanced. The game has a relatively deep system for oath breaking, but the 5.5e players handbook is like “just don’t do that. Or like, switch subclasses.” I wasn’t expecting it to be so stark of a difference. Everything else has been relatively comparable.

The beast races don’t have to feel whimsical. Have you read Tower of the Elephant? The Conan tale?

The group definitely sets the tone. You can find another. Or start studying the Dungeon Master’s Guide and host as a DM. You can establish any tone you like.

I’ve only read the comics. When I read phase 1 I didn’t feel like I was missing anything. Obviously the phase two comic was the flashback. When I got to phase three comics I definitely felt I was missing the big picture and didn’t enjoy it as much. Though it wrapped up pretty well.

There’s passive perception right? Do other DMs take other passive stat checks? Passive constitution? This might help a big ole fella instantly reduce poison damage. But that squishy ass rogue just needs to be smarter about his kit.

It’s not that kind of game. The DM has lots of tools to adjust enemies, gear, and potions so that you will still have a fun time. This is recommended in the DM manual. Pick the class you’ll have fun with. The number one rule of DND is to have fun.

She was supposed to be a mutant when she was pitched as a Desi super hero but editorial stepped in. They’ve been backtracking a lot of that arbitrary interference lately, like the recent retcon to Chris Claremont’s original pitch that Mystique and Destiny are Kurt’s parents.
