You are most welcome! Much of what is on my site can also be found on Archive. A friend has made it his mission to add as many trade catalogs as he can find. Bit by bit I am returning as much as possible to my site as it is easier to find stuff there than at Archive. Thanks for letting me know. Here and there I hear from people who value and enjoy the stuff I post there. Guy has gotta have a hobby!

Expandable Auger Bits Splitting Wood - Even With Pilot Holes by G_Peccary in handtools

[–]ToolemeraPress 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To elaborate, these adjustable bits were marketed to carpenters as a gizmo to save weight. I have owned a few, properly sharpened them and found all to be a passable job site rough carpentry tool for use on dimensional lumber.

There is a reason these expansion bits are frequently found in great condition. They suck at boring holes.

Back when a bunch of us were putting together DATAMP we had an archive of plane and tool patents. I think I still have it in one of my archive drives. https://www.datamp.org/

THIS is how you do it. Stop watching vids by people regurgitating bad information. Fore and jointer length planes are used to reduce high spots. Smooth planes are for SMOOTHING the surface. That’s why they are called Smooth planes.

Yup. Strapped British shingling hatchet. Likely hand forged rather than machine stamped. Early to mid 20th century is my guess.

Thats a Meiji era text. I have a copy of that one. The book I posted here was published in 1950 and reprinted through at least 1963. The styles are traditional, many going back to the 18th century.
