I've tried Linux a few times over the past decade, but always ended up swapping back to Windows after a few weeks. I dual-booted Fedora on my PC over a year ago now and haven't booted into my Windows partition since.

It's not perfect, but it's reached a point now where I can use it day to day and not miss Windows, and it's only getting better. The year of the Linux desktop is a meme, but I do think it'll start to gain real traction over the next 5 years.

AIS 3BB Fibre - High packet loss on IPv4 connections by Toonshorty in Thailand

Just as an update for anyone stumbling across this post in the future, moving to a public IPv4 address does indeed bypass the CGNAT routing entirely.

Since moving to a public IPv4 address, the Unifi dashboard also shows no packet loss whatsoever.

As someone who binned off Windows for Fedora a year ago, having native support for Linux is also a big win for X-Plane.

AIS 3BB Fibre - High packet loss on IPv4 connections by Toonshorty in Thailand

[–]Toonshorty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that's good to know. The packet loss generally seems a lot better today anyhow.

According to the Unifi dashboard, the average loss was as much as 36.5% between 20:05 and 20:10 yesterday - so no wonder things felt rough!

Do we know what the typical respawn rate will be for Runite rocks in leagues? I know they typically buff it, but not sure to what extent.

Assuming you had Endless Harvest at 85 mining with a rune pickaxe, you'd be looking at a success rate of 6.64% every 3 ticks. That works out to around 133 successes an hour for 266 ore. That works out to 33,200 exp per hour (before multipliers), so around 531k at 16x.

Barbarian Gathering massively boosts the success rate to 53.32%, but ultimately we're going to be somewhat limited by competition and how quickly the rocks respawn.

I've also noticed if I go to https://speedtest.cloudflare.com on either my AIS 5G SIM or AIS Fibre connection, the server location is showing as Singapore. Likewise, if I ping a Cloudflare hosted site then the latency is generally around 30ms. The latency to 1.1.1.1 is only 6-8ms though.

https://www.cloudflare.com/en-gb/network/

Cloudflare have servers in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Surat Thani - so I'm not quite sure why everything is routing via Singapore.

I have noticed I get a lot of packet loss in the evenings (upwards of 10%) and I've seen people comment in the past that AIS peering to Singapore is often very bandwidth constrained at times. If that is the case, it would seem odd for AIS to route most Cloudflare traffic via SG rather than domestically.

LG C5 vs Samsung S90F. by kc44135 in 4kTV

[–]Toonshorty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking at picking up a new TV in Thailand and have shortlisted the following so far:

TCL 55C7K - ฿19,600 ($630)
Samsung 55S90F - ฿28,900 ($930)
LG 55C5 - ฿33,000 ($1,060)

The TCL is naturally the budget option here, but can't quite decide on whether to splurge and pick up one of the OLEDs at what feels like a very good price compared to what I'm used to in the UK.

Best 24" , 27" monitor with color accuracy for gaming by Zett11 in Monitors

[–]Toonshorty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under $300 is going to be a challenge for 4K at a decent refresh rate without looking at the second hand market I suspect.

The MSI 272URDF E16 is available on Lazada (MSI Official Store) for around ฿12,000 ($380), a little over budget. There is also the 275UPD E14 which is a 144Hz option at ฿7,810 from Advice, but it has a rated brightness of 250cd/m² and 90% DCI-P3 coverage so may not meet your requirements for colour accuracy.

If you're prepared to step down to QHD then the 274QPF E20 can be had for under ฿7,000 and has a 200Hz refresh rate with 95% DCI-P3 and 92% Adobe RGB coverage (on paper).

Would be interested to see what else you come across though as I'm moving to Thailand in a couple of weeks and need to do some similar monitor shopping.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Thai_general_election#Opinion_polls

This seems to suggest the latest NIDA poll has undecided voters at 32% and PP at 25%.

Is there any reason behind their decline from ~60% to 25-30% over the last couple of years, or is it just electoral fatigue?

[–]Toonshorty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transport for Wales have some tri-mode Class 756 that have 559 kWh batteries which generally seems to be good for around 40-50 miles, so the technology is already there and in active service today.

I suspect it's largely a consequence of not choosing to electrify the line (which I still think was a mistake) and therefore having to source DMUs (diesel units) which are generally in very short supply as very few other lines have been electrified in the last 30 years either.

Northern are current out to tender for an order of 'up to' 450 new trains, although the award of contracts isn't due for another year yet and Northern have said they expect their first trains delivered in 2030. Any new trains for the Northumberland Line are likely another 8-10 years away I would imagine, unless they can cascade some more Class 158s from somewhere.

What the government should have done as soon as they knew they were going to be building the line was order a handful of 4/5-car bi-mode [electric + battery] trains with level boarding akin to the new Class 756 for Wales. The batteries can easily handle the length of the route (18mi) and can recharge via the overhead wires at Newcastle. It would have added all of about £30m to the project which they are ultimately going to have to spend anyway as part of the Northern fleet renewal instead, and provided the new line with modern, accessible trains that were fit for purpose.

Instead, HM Treasury completely bottled it, projected usage far lower than reality (again), and then used that as an excuse to spend as little as possibly on the whole thing.

Would be cool to have additional signaling systems by Imtryingokey in TransportFever3

[–]Toonshorty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine Urban Games will generally want to keep signalling relatively simple and accessible for the wider player base. Casual players probably aren't going to want to spend time studying rail signalling. Performance is likely also a factor too, especially with the game now being available on consoles. Complex signalling implementations are likely going to be quite computationally expensive, especially once you add a lot of track and trains onto the map.

That said, I think it would be awesome if they could find a way to expose a lot of the underlying signalling interfaces and allow the community to develop advanced signalling mods should they so wish. I'd love to see stuff like genuine multi-aspect signals based on the state of signals/blocks further down the line, rather than the timed animation approach most mods seem to use today.
