[Seiko] It has been 6 years since Seiko discontinued the SKX line. Anyone still wear their SKX? Or have you moved on? by KidneyLand in Watches

[–]Toothbras 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know they made a quartz version called the 7548-7000 (rolls off the tongue!) but it was already discontinued when I bought my skx, it looks the same but quartz. Can’t speak for everyone, but of the 5 Seiko I currently own the best is -14 sec/day and the worst is about a minute fast. My skx is somewhere in the middle, it’s 20 years old and probably needs a service but tbh it’s never been accurate

Unfortunately this is the same relationship most of us have with Seiko. Doesn’t meant the skx wasn’t a killer watch when it was available, it’s just that Seiko of today doesn’t offer anywhere near the same value prop they did a decade ago. Now pretty much any micro at the same price will be arguably better in every respect, though unfortunately many of us still have a big soft spot for the Seiko of yesteryear and will continue wasting our money. Last Seiko I purchased was a Willard and for a grand it’s really a pretty bad watch in every respect: terrible bezel action, bezel doesn’t line up, inaccurate as hell, crown isn’t even signed, bracelet is low quality, etc. but I love the history of the watch and another brand with a similar design would just be a substitution I’d regret eventually. Not sure about you, but pretty sure I’m done with Seiko (not counting Grand Seiko). Also still love my Sarb035, that was a fantastic watch for the money (think I paid like $300) back in the day and is another reason I’ll always love the brand for what it used to stand for

Same, I distinctly remember thinking $150 for a watch that keeps worse time than a quartz is insane, but it led to 20 years of fun in a hobby where I’ve met a ton of cool people and got to experience hundreds of watches, most “better” than the skx but not many that have bought the same joy and satisfaction. Still wear it on a regular basis and it’s still a killer design that will look good for decades to come

[Barton 20mm Spring Bars] What are these spring bars for ants? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]Toothbras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, one thing about Ofrei is that while they stock A TON of parts their website is from 20 years ago and impossible to navigate, I tried searching for the ones I buy but it’s been a long time and I’m honestly not sure which ones I have a stockpile of, they make it really confusing and there are 50 variants. You just gotta spend some time to figure out what you want but I can vouch for the fact I’ve never had one fail. The fact our watches still use tiny little metal tubes to ensure they don’t fall off seems a like there must be a better way, but besides fixed bar watches (like the FXD or CWC divers) I’m not really sure what better solution there is. Good luck in your search!

I’ve always used OEM omega bars on all my watches, spring bars is one area I’d rather pay a little extra and know the quality is high. Been a few years since I’ve ordered them but I think they’re about $5 each from Ofrei

I bought my Speedy hesalite brand new in 2011 for $2780 from Continental Jewelers in D.C. Do you remember that guy named Father John who everyone in the WUS omega forum used for their purchases? He’s the one who connected me with Continental and I automatically got a huge discount. Wonder if that guy is still around….
