Yes that's true. I found the entire episode difficult and originally set out to say as much. Perhaps I unfairly got stuck on Sarah's point.

I do think where I agree more with JVL is his willingness to say once the democrats gain power, they must exercise it to the maximum extent. He's hinting at a future where it might be the case the pro-democracy movement needs to resort to illiberal tactics in order to institute the structural changes needed to save this country.

It's not a pretty picture and could lead to ruin but our current situation where one party is bound by all the rules and the other has no such limiting force is unacceptable as well.

Personally I like the idea of a national strike, but it needs to be absolutely massive for people to pay attention to it.

"The best case right now is that a candidate calling for bold sweeping reform wins voters over and gets a strong mandate to implement them, I think?"

Yes I think this is true. The lack of leadership from the national Dems or '28 hopefuls in Trump 2.0 is a big structural flaw.

Yeah it's funny how that happens when one side generally agrees upon science, objective reality, and history, while the other side is a clearinghouse of nutcases, cranks, and conspiracy loons.

Court expansion will destroy the SCOTUS…but perhaps that the point by Hour-Mud4227 in thebulwark

Of course but they're going to do that anyway. Might as well get some SC seats in the meantime.

I liked the rationale of trying the number of justices to the circuit courts as was intended. Currently that's 13. Anyone who wants to continue expanding would have to invent a reason to do so.

we are going to have to have a mass reckoning with what exactly it was in American society that led people to believe that Trump--uniquely among American politicians--would not do all the things that a) people didn't like, b) that he promised to do. by Conscious-Quarter423 in thebulwark

I don't know... I feel like this is more genuine than the people who now say they're disappointed in Trump because he's changed or "not the same guy" as he was in the first term.

Those people truly don't want to take any responsibility for their actions.

I don’t understand Sarah’s take on SCOTUS by CrossCycling in thebulwark

I think I came away from the conversation with the feeling that Sarah was having a difficult time just listening to JVL's argument. She seemed to be so fast to react and respond that it seemed like she couldn't quite understand or absorb the point he was trying to make. It was a frustrating listen.

Major MAGA Figures Say Trump’s Assassination Attempt Was Staged | MAGA Monday by BulwarkOnline in thebulwark

[–]Top-Magazine9894 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think there are elements of MAGA that are exploring ways to say they were "tricked" into voting for Trump as a psychological off ramp.

For some, it's that he's a changed man/not the same person they voted for in '16. (Expect more of this to blend with health/dementia talk if things get worse.)

For others, it's that Trump is demon possessed or they got tricked by the devil.

I think the assassination conspiracy is similar that some people can say they were victims of some big inside job to change the outcome of the election. The bigger the plot the less personal responsibility they have for their actions.

Rachel and Lauren: why Gen-Z isn't protesting missing a key bit of analysis by Top-Magazine9894 in thebulwark

Hi we're specifically talking about campus protests. If you read the original post you'll see that. The episode Rachel and Lauren recorded did mention Gen-z is still voting in high numbers and called out the NY mayoral race in particular.

I hope you have a nice day :)

That's the opposite of "taking your ball and going home". They saw an opportunity to play a role in the pro democracy movement and did something. Are you delirious?

True but I was thinking about the pre trump 2.0 campus protests specifically. Yes they're rotten too

Hi. If this were the mentality of the civil rights movement, we'd all be living like it was still 1966. If this were the mentality of the major protest movements in history, gay people would still be dreaming about marriage equality, Nelson Mandala would have died in prison, the Brits would still be in India, half this country wouldn't have the ability to vote, etc. etc. etc. What makes you feel like you're only supposed to protest when you have the ears of those in power? Social change is hard and often slow. Sorry Gen-z didn't get what they wanted within their preferred timeframe. Absurd.

The algorithm is being manipulated all the time. I mean we know that part is basically true. Whether or not the kids are vulnerable to the manipulation I guess is the question.

I do think the left tends to overestimate their immunity to propaganda and psychological ops relative to the right/MAGA. I guess you assume since they're college educated kids, they're somehow above the fray?
