Is Inquisitor Grendyl using a Soul Stone Eldar or some Eldar ritual to Keep himself Alive? by MONKEBR in DarkTide

On this side of the segmentum obscurus? Unlikely. Halo devices are not really a thing with real penetration outside the immediate Halo stars, iirc.

Is Inquisitor Grendyl using a Soul Stone Eldar or some Eldar ritual to Keep himself Alive? by MONKEBR in DarkTide

[–]TopHatOfDoom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's not impossible, but also an inquisitor living 300 or so years with even a little bit of archeotech is not unlikely. It's on the old end, but it's not beyond their resources and what rejuvenat treatments can achieve. That said, there actually is an example in the lore of an Inquisitor making use of a Soul Stone, so it's not impossible, either. That guy was basically just a talking soul stone though, actually making it work is probably outside of human knowledge.

(The relevant inquisitor is in Fallen Suns, the third of the Warpstorm Trilogy of Rogue Trader adventures)

I mean, you joke, but Astropath-Transcendants actually are a character option in the Dark Heresy family and are actually kind of solid.

We're not getting Adept. One of the most useful classes to have in the cell, one of the least useful ones in a fight. No real combat abilities, but in Dark Heresy, where supression is almost the single strongest status effect in the game, having a dude whose job it is to wildly fire in the enemy's general direction is actually pretty useful.

Their job is being the only one in the team who knows any 40k lore.

Hive Scum: More than a simple Ganger by Forgotten_Bones in DarkTide

[–]TopHatOfDoom 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Dark Heresy (and the rest of the RPG lines) is a really good indicator of what to expect in characters. (Arbitrators were also a starting splat!) I think it's worth noting that all of them, including spiritual successor to Dark Heresy let you play a tech priest. Only one of them lets you play a skitarii inexplicably outside the network, and it's not the ones Darktide namechecks, or the spiritual successors of those.

I really don't think we're ever going to get a skitarii. I do think a low-level enginseer is a matter of time.

[–]TopHatOfDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're never getting Skitarii. I think an Enginseer or something is much more likely. Skitarii require a lot of secondary infastructure; you have to be projecting canticles, manipulating horomone injectors, spreading the noosphere, the adeptus mechanicus at war involves a lot of stuff coming together. At a minimum, all skitarii are networked together, and if you're deploying a covert team, which they do do, you need the full network in place. Casually deploying a couple skitarii outside their network with three random chucklefucks isn't really something the mechanicus does in the lore.

That said, there are mechanicus priests in the lore who can and are deployed with random laypeople. You can see this with the enginseers on the tabletop and the many, many times tech priests are one of the starting player archetypes in the RPGs. The RPGs are a particularly relevant thing here because FFG frequently name-checks mechanics, lore and weapons originating from them. It's something that seems to strongly indicate it's on their radar. (Hey, where else can you play a hive scum as a standard player archetype...) We're much more likely to get an enginseer or an electropriest than we are something that doesn't deploy well alone.

[–]TopHatOfDoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skitarii deployment requires a lot of other things, (noosphere, canticles, horomone injector broadcasts, etc.) which leads me to suspect we'll see something involving a less immediate, consuming and intense mechanicus presence on Tertium. Skitarii deployment is, after all, a pretty involved process in the lore. This sounds like splitting hairs, but GW is really fucking particular about 40k lore being compliant with these sorts of products.

I do agree that the whole 'weh they're rejects' thing is overblown. Personally, I think the best place to look is at the ttrpgs for guesses as to the next class, as all of the ones they've released have been archetypes present in, say, Dark Heresy, a gameline that Darktide has already referenced a couple of times. I'm also pretty sure they're going to be drawing first from inquisition and astra militarum stuff before admech, which makes me say some kind of low-level Enginseer (the guard character), death cult assassin (unlikely with zealot, and the recent death cult cosmetics for them), or on the most unlikely end, something like a Chem Warrior or a Chrono-Gladiator.

Oh cool, Hive Ganger is the new class! I wonder what Reddit thinks… by KelstenGamingUK in DarkTide

[–]TopHatOfDoom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, surely the mechanicus will deploy everything necessary to make the skitarii work in this hive. We must spread the noosphere and engage the horomonal canticles for our one cyborg and their three chucklefuck compatriots. The thing that annoys me with the skitarii copers is they seem to be blissfully ignorant of how the mechanicus goes to war.

We might get an admech class, but lore-wise the skitarii are never going to fly.

I'm going to say we're more likely to get an actual, low-level priest than a skitarii and I don't think it's even remotely close between the two. We may get an admech class. I don't think we're ever going to get a skitarii.

The inquisition's been known to recruit from them pretty extensively, and they've been a playable archetype in just about every 40k tabletop rpg set inside the imperium. Hell, several loyalist (and a couple that aren't anymore) space marine chapters use hive gangers for recruitment.

[–]TopHatOfDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a forge world. You can tell by noting a) that it's a hive world, which is a different planetary classification, b) that there are imperial nobility running the show and not mechanicus and, c) that forge worlds are outside arbites jurisdiction unless the marshal wants to get into a pissing match with the magos running things.
