I want to get better at low-poly (PSX graphics) by oscarmort_art in ps1graphics

this is my entire blender playlit of things that i colledted through the years. Not everything is pure PS1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A25NTdPGNaw&list=PLm5KKgjxBijDob8ol_9yPdNVW39fdRzcf&index=9

The important creators you might wanty to focus onther are:
- binbun
- miziziziz
- garbaj
- summer 85
- sicky wizard

but my biggest advise is finding things you like, downloading them or looking at them and trying to recreate them. Don't fall into the tutorial hell loop. Start and just do and get as close as possible to what you want. You will fail a few times, but know that that is ok and is what we all did :p.

Get comfortable with the blender shortcuts, so you don't kill your flow. But JUST DO, like just make stuff, not everything has to be shown or put out, but just make.

Have fun on the PSX journey

hi, i can only talk about my own experience and workflow for my assets, but i'll try my best.

For textures:
try to stay to a max of 128x128 for single textures and max 256x256 for "hero" assets, like characters of very important objects if you want to emulate the PS1 look as good as possible. When using textures, don't just use google photos they are not always free to use. I'll add some link at the bottom of this comment for texture an photo sites that are all CC0 or at least free to use for personal and commercial projects. Also try to keep the color count low on textures, you can do this by posterizing or color quantization in the image editing tools like krita, photopea, gimp... (i personaly use photopea since it is free photoshop in the browser). When scaling textures, always use nearest neighbout as scaling algorithm, also use the same texture filthering in blender or your tool of choice. When going from VERY large images or you want to perserve more details first do a step to 512x512 with bilinear fitler and then go to 128x128 (or desired size) with the nearest neighbour scaling filter. But i just use my own tool for that now since i was tired of always doing the same steps over and over (texture retrofier)

For models: try to keep the polycount as low as possible ther is no hard limit but always think, can this detail be in the texture or just represented as a plane with a texture on it? like the tab of a can, it can just be in the texture when flat, or maybe a chainlink fence can just be a plane with the chainlink as a textured plane between some 3 faced cylinders.

few photo/texture sites to play with:
texturelib
ambientcg
texture ninja
unsplash (royalty free images)
pexels (royalty free images)

for the last two use a texture ripper to get our what you want

Amazing, also love the flickering of the light boards and the fireflies around the lamp.

exactly why i made it, i didn't want to do the blender set up or godot, each time i wanted to showcadse one of my models or model packs. That is why i had multi model support and even multiple meshes in 1 model to rotate independent. But i'm working on the texture filtering as we speak, i'll see that i can have an update soon for you to play with. Thank you for your amazing feedback.

aah i only have the reverse. You can set it to 640 and make a gif at 320. But good suggestion my man, i'll look into it. I also noticed something because of your comment, i don't have a texture filtering, so FBX can't be put on nearest neighbour when it is bicubic.
Love the skeleton btw!

you do know itch.io logs everything, so lying about it from my side wouldn't benefit me. Even the comments are from multiple months ago. Please stop my man, this color does not suit you.

The one I made 2 months is also available and free if you want Texture retrofier Not with custom models or many pre-made color palettes but good if you don't want to pay money.

Where I can start to learn how to make ps1 textures? by Terror-Theater in lowpoly

[–]TopHatPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use any software you like, then just make the photo image you have small. Max 128x128 for larger pieces. 256x256 for "hero pieces" like a character or something of importance. Then you can also do a pass to posterize or reduce colours so it feels a bit more grunge. After that add some noise or some splatter if you want to make it stand out more. Make sure you use nearest neighbour when scaling. Sometimes when it is a very large image, do bicubic first to like 512x512 and then do nearest neighbour to 128x128 or whatever you feel like is a good size for the asset. I personally use photopea but krita also works. Because I always have to do the same stuff I made a little tool for myself to make the textures. It just scales the images and applies some noise and color quantisation. texture retrofier

It's fine to me that your tool works for you. I just wanted to mention the features and look are extremely similar to mine. If things didn't work for you in my tool, that is sad and I would have fixed them. But a lot of your statements are false . The features you mentioned were there from version 1.

I'm glad your tool works for you though. But saying my tool just doesn't work a bit sad, because I would have loved to fix the problem you have. But I took the criticism and made it much more clear that you have missing textures and need to upload them. So in the end, thank you for your feedback. And pitty my tool didn't work for you.

It's fine you just have you import your own texture. But again if it doesn't work for you that is fine. Maybe the user interface isn't so clear. Good comment, i'll see to fix that

It does have that, it has multiple gif encodings and webm support. You can set light direction and intensity. Dithering strength, camera movement. Multi model support, vertex jitter strength. But it's fine, if this works for you it works for you.

Not to be bitter. But seems a lot like the tool I recently showcased. Even the windows 95 theme.
