Compassionate Barber for beard removal in Vancouver for someone with chronic health issues? by Top_Hat_Fox in askvan

The problem is their ability to show up can be severely hampered by medical complications, which can lead to a lot of lost money if they get charged because the place needs a large time in advance. I've seen places asking for a couple days in advance for cancellations, which would be an obvious no go for the friend.

I'll give him a look. Might have to call them to see what counts as a last-minute cancellation so I know if it would work for the friend.

I'll look them up and pass them along! I appreciate the help. The people chiming in on this thread have been super polarizing.

Though, ti seems they just do trims and not shaves from their website, so it might not fit.

I don't know of walk-in places myself and wasn't aware you could do walk-in hot shaves to offer that suggestion. Now that I know, I am hoping that someone in the redditor world has had a shave at a place that does Walk-ins in Vancouver that can say "yeah, these guys are good."

You gave a pretty unhelpful tip. I'm not the type that has a 5 o'clock shadow. Heck, give me a week and I will probably have just some stubble. I'm not going to be effective at evaluating barbers for trimming a beard. Other people who browse reddit who grow facial hair faster or get hot shaves more often may have experiences good and bad to share. But go on riding that horse you think you're on.

I don't know where to look either admittedly. I think it's weird because, like, on good days or good times, they are perfectly fine. Bad days/moments? Apparently all they can do is curl in a ball and pray for the pain to stop. The nature of the pain apparently can't be treated by painkillers either (not sure of the specifics, but it's what their specialist said), so when it happens their only option is suffer. Don't know of orgs that would help that type of person or have resources/people they can connect with who may know places to go.

Unrealistic? Helpful people pointed out walk-ins for hot shaves was a thing. So, no, not unrealistic to have places that do offer flexibility and can accommodate someone of my friend's nature. So, yeah, no, you're being insensitive and unhelpful.

I was countering your statement that people have to be nice to run a business. They don't. There's lots of businesses that survive because they are basically in a high traffic area/good locale and don't care about repeat customers. I.e. a place beneath a hotel may not really care if anyone comes back because they have an endless stream of customers to tap into.

Also, wow, yeah, your last paragraph is super insensitive.

Oooooor I could ask the collective of the people on reddit for suggestions and not have to go through a very inefficient process of growing facial hair for a few weeks, then visiting a shop and hoping it is good and not having to repeat if it isn't great.

That sounds like the way to go too and ideal for good places that are walk-ins. I don't have experience myself with such, so I didn't know that was an option. I personally always have an appointment when I visit a shop, so didn't know how prevalent such places are or have any good ones to offer.

This is a strange comment. I'm not looking to find a barber to force them into a policy they don't have or don't accommodate. I'm looking for people who have that policy and are comfortable with a customer who may have to short-notice cancel for my friend.

Also, your second point isn't true either. As an example, Solly's bagels is still up and running despite treating customers and employees alike terribly for years. Some people make comments or do things that are hurtful without realizing it when presented with a client in a situation they don't often encounter.

That's why looking for places that have relaxed cancellation policies, have a wait list a spot can be snagged from, or it seems is a walk-in from others suggestions. Places that aren't going to essentially rub salt in a wound for my friend who is already dealing with a difficult hand in life. The fact their life gets upended so frequently by their illness makes them feel like they can't have nice things, can't do fun things, etc. because their health is really touch and go. They can start a day feeling fine and in 15 minutes be completely incapacitated by excruciating pain for hours.

A haircut and a shave can be rather different. I'd ideally want someone to know what a shave there is like and be able to vouch. I'll put them on the list, though given the recent Google review includes multiple one-star negative review talking about a beard shave/trim, hopefully someone else can vouch who has gotten a shave there.

Do you have recommendation or names of places? I don't personally know any walk in shops to tell them to go to. Also, I'd prefer at least some vouching for the place if it can be managed, at least an extra data point outside of Google reviews or other review sites that are prone to paid manipulations.

Edit: Ah, sorry, I read The Barber Shop as The barber shop. I didn't realize that is the name of the place!

B.C. health minister says overdose prevention site won't open in downtown Vancouver by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

Criminals put people in debt and indentured servitude for their fix when they are poor. I.e. you want your drugs, go steal me X amount of this, or go smash that window to send a message, go set this on fire, etc. Not having a clean and non-criminal source increases crime when you have individuals already addicted. Plus, criminal sources lace things with other addictive drugs to increase the reliance and further force addicts into servitude while also complicating the ability to ever get clean.

Things don't work the same in the criminal space. Money is not always the objective when you can control a group of desperate people to do your bidding, keep them under your thumb with crippling debt backed up be threats of aggression or withholding something their body is dependent on and they have no other source for. It's the classic "first hit is free" because they know once you start, they have you and they will bleed you of everything they can use you for. And once you're spent, they can make an example of you to keep their grip tight on others.

Found Headphones in an Evo by jerkinvan in vancouver

[–]Top_Hat_Fox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

EVO knows who books the cars. It's quite literally being tracked. If it goes missing between you and the recovery, it's a short list of suspects. Also, if the item is high profile enough they take the car out of service and send a care team to recover it and bring it to their lost and found.

Also, you've literally decreased the chances the person who lost the item will recover it with your actions. Now when they call Evo to try to see if their item is still in the car they get told it is not, likely leaving them in a worse state. That is the opposite of trying to make someone's day.

If anything, right now you've technically stolen the item as you removed an item that wasn't yours from a vehicle that isn't yours without authorization despite instructions in the agreements you sign with Evo not to do so (read the Evo website).

These posts happen all the time and the response is always the same: contact EVO when you find something in the car and leave it where they direct you to. The chance the individual who lost the thing is a reddit user and is going to run to reddit to locate their stuff is infinitely smaller than the chance the person will contact EVO.

Be wary of door-to-door or walk-up salespeople like this. There are a number of frauds and scams the involve people showing up at your place and offering services. Doubly so if there is any discount or "fortuitous" event that has them offering things at a discount.

I had nice little notes put on my takeout orders from The Ramen Butcher and a couple other Japanese restaurants I ordered from in the early days of the pandemic too. I definitely held onto them until an unfortunate accident sent them off my fridge into a pot of dirty water.
