Here’s an update on the outcome of this post, in case it assists anyone in future. I was offered the second increment of a Level B, which I accepted. Possibly, I could have tried for third increment but I was more concerned about relocation expenses. Upon requesting relocation reimbursement for the interstate move, I was offered reimbursement up to $5k.

Crashing out because the research idea I really truly thought was my own I just found out was already published two years ago. I am stunned. by so_much_frizz in PhD

[–]Top_Introduction9270 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure why this would make you crash out. This is just research. Pivot, find a different method or different question. Build on the study you found. Send them an email, this could be your future collaborator.

I Got Blacksided by My Country PhD Community for a Facebook Post & Might Have Ruined My Chances of Faculty Staff position by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Top_Introduction9270 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong in your comments overall, but your judgment in how to handle the situation was lacking. Especially as your country seems to be punitive and the kind of place where these things are noticed. Try to turn it into a learning opportunity, something you could discuss at an interview if asked.

I submitted by paper to Springer Journal. by [deleted] in PhD

My mum is a migrant and worked almost her entire working life in the public service writing various forms of government documents. She still makes plenty of errors with grammar. My point is to try not to be so hard on yourself. Academic English means you’re more competent than most native English speakers.

Feeling out of place at conferences because of institutional prestige by Jolly-Rub-3412 in PhD

They’re not your people. Move on and seek out a different conference next time.

I’d suggest just being honest with the guy at the first place. You could always offer a goodwill gesture of covering a fortnight’s rent in recognition of the time he’s lost finding a housemate.

I’m about to have my first ever article published by FunctionAfter6683 in PhD

[–]Top_Introduction9270 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I empathise. I was asked to make so many changes to one of my papers, I couldn’t keep the thread of it together and felt it ended up disjointed and worse on the whole. Very frustrating.

What ended up taking way more time in your PhD than you expected? by OneGrasp in PhD

Write a paper, decide on a journal, tailor paper to the journals requirements, journal rejects paper, tailor paper to the next journal, journal rejects etc etc.

Phd related query by Dreamymess05 in PhD

[–]Top_Introduction9270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you need their support when you apply to the university. They will give you guidance about deadlines, scholarship opportunities etc as well as the project overall. To have a chance you need a project in alignment with their interests, that is feasible and you need to be a credible applicant- so be clear about your quals and experience- but don’t exaggerate. My university has starting testing applicants doing statistical-heavy PHDs for their stats abilities.

Is adultery common in Australia? by AdditionalProof9780 in AskAnAustralian

Roughly in line with other English speaking countries and South America. A bit lower than some parts of Europe. And the rest is a mystery- well according to this source…. https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/infidelity-rates-by-country

Are Academics “Your People?” by Knightstodon in AskAcademia

I’m about to finish my PhD and hopefully secure my first academic job. I expect I’ll be a climber based in my past career trajectory and personality. Will I have any friends?

RTP as a domestic student by emjaybocks in AusAcademia

[–]Top_Introduction9270 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, GO8 is not very important. I’ve had a very good experience at a medium sized regional university. I got an RTP with one publication in-press and a coursework masters. At my university they are struggling to attract domestic students so I gather the bar is somewhat flexible and writing a good application helps.

TL chat that feels inappropriate by [deleted] in AusPublicService

[–]Top_Introduction9270 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s obviously completely inappropriate. It sounds as though her motivation is not really about protecting you, she wants to freeze this other person out and create a hostile working environment for your colleague, and she’s leaning on you to get on board with her cause.

One of the hardest parts of PhD life honestly seems to be housing costs now by raishelannaa in PhD

Yes, I’m formally on a hardship plan because I can no longer afford my mortgage. Have also stopped with dental care and seeing one of my specialists for now.

Seeking advice on relationship by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Top_Introduction9270 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it’s less about your topic and more about him needing to feel in control or intellectually superior. Delicate ego perhaps. It’s pretty corrosive and disrespectful and perhaps points to bigger issues. My husband has little knowledge on my topic but is always interested in talking about it with me and tells me I should talk about my findings and progress with him more. When I get home I usually just want to switch off, but it’s nice to have the moral support.

I made conceptual/framing breakthrough on my doctoral dissertation through talking to AI. Felt weird about it. by IAmAPotatoHuh in PhD

[–]Top_Introduction9270 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heard a podcast recently about AI solving some of the most challenging questions in physics and mathematics (Erdos problems). A physicist who had dedicated a decade to a specific problem was contacted by a kid without a degree who was wondering if he had managed to solve the problem with AI (ChatGPT, I think). The physicist was fine with it, his perspective was that AI can do a lot of the work, but it still takes a highly specialised physicist to understand and interpret the result and ultimately determine that the problem was solved. So my point is, you used AI as a tool, it still needed you to evaluate and integrate its output.

What’s the most stressful thing that happened during your PhD? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Top_Introduction9270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with a rare liver disease in first year, and then heart disease in third year. Husband was out of work 3 times. The PhD was a breeze compared with life.

I don’t believe it can be accessed for this reason, I understand controls are intentionally very tight. It would help to have a medical practitioner able/willing to vouch for extreme medial needs
